Have it your way. Those of a certain age may remember this as the famous tag line of a fast food chain restaurant. I'm willing to bet that if you do remember it, you're singing that jingle to yourself right now. It's a catchy little tune and made the point that even fast food could be made to order. It's a lot like organizing.

One Size Does Not Fit All

It may seem like a stretch to compare the slogan of a fast food chain with organizing. Let's connect the dots. The message of the slogan encouraged customers to create their food order to be as individual as they are. In other words, there was no 'one size fits all' on the menu. When organizing your home, your office, your garage, or any space in between, it has to be done so suit your needs, vision and the way you use the space. Copying the way someone else has organized their living or working space won't work for you when your lifestyle is different, or when your vision is different or when your goals are different. When organizing, have it your way.
Textbook Organizing (or not)
There are certainly a plethora of organizing books on the market. In each, you will no doubt find tips and tricks and ideas to help you dig your way out of the mounds of clutter that may surround you. And there are just as many guidelines and methods and systems for you to follow to help you maintain your newly de-cluttered space. It's good advice, as long as it works for you. Keep these thoughts in mind when tackling a project to ensure that the results are meaningful to you:
  • Organizing is a personal process; there are no right or wrong answers.
  • Setting realistic and achievable goals keeps you on track and aids in your organizing success.
  • Storing items where they are intuitively easy to find and access is what will make your system work for you.
  • Maintaining your system is key, so you'll need to give it your attention on a regular basis.
Before taking on an organizing project, think about what you'd like to accomplish. What do you envision for the space? How do you want it to work for you? The possibilities are as unique as you are. Have it your way.
