Newsletter

As we welcome 2018, I wish you all much happiness and good health throughout the year.

While ringing in the New Year, many people make resolutions. Our New Year's goal at Christ the King Pre-school/Daycare is to focus even more on wellness, exercise, and nutrition.

When looking back on December highlights, the children's performances at the Holiday Shows are at the top. The true spirit of the holidays were captured with them singing their little hearts out and acting out their dance routines. We will cherish these memories for years to come.

All of the teachers and staff at Christ the King
Pre-school/Daycare would like to thank all of the families for their generosity throughout the Holiday Season.  It was very thoughtful of you and very much appreciated.

January is a great time for many science-focused activities. The teachers give some of the best science lessons in the winter. The children can actually see their breath and watch the snow turn to ice, water, and back to ice again.

During the 1st week of January we will learn about eating healthy, practicing good exercise, sleep, and dental hygiene habits.

During the 2nd week January is a great time for many science-focused activities.  The teachers give some of the best science lessons in the winter.   The children can even see their breath outside!

During the 3rd week of January, we will have Drama appreciation, as we learn to act out some of our favorite songs, nursery rhymes, and stories.  We will also learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

During the last week of January, we will continue learn about winter with special hands on activities involving freezing, melting, snow, ice, and snowflakes.

  • Just a reminder our Daycare Center is open from 7am - 7pm.

  • Please remember to make sure your child's cubby contains weather-appropriate clothing. We also appreciate all of our parents continuing to bring in diapers and a box of wipes twice each month on the 1st and the 15th.
  • When calling the facility, please keep in mind that calls should be ideally made between 12-2pm while the children are napping.
  • We ask that you do not allow your child(ren) to run ahead of you when entering and leaving the facility, it is a safety issue. Especially when exiting the building, children should never open the security door.
  • Strollers that are left in our storage area must be closed.
  • Weather Information/School Closing
Please check our website  www.ctkny.org for the latest in school closing information. If we should have to close due to inclement weather, you will also receive an email notification.
  • Mid-year Progress Reports will be distributed during the last week of January (January 22nd - 26th). Parents can schedule an individual appointment with their child's teacher either before their drop off time or before their pick up. You may also choose a phone conference scheduled during naptime.

We thank you for your cooperation with these matters.

Science with the Chipmunks
The Chipmunks love learning about science and doing experiments to explore and learn all that is around them.  One experiment we did was learning about solutions.  We made two different kinds of solutions using sugar, salt and water.
First we asked what they thought a solution was and wrote it down and compared it later on to what they found out after the experiment was completed.
We filled two clear glasses with warm water.  Then into one glass we put a spoonful of sugar and the other a spoonful of salt.  Then we stirred the sugar water and salt water.  I asked the class what happened to the sugar and salt as their faces looked astonished.  They said the sugar and salt disappeared. I told them that was correct.  The sugar and salt dissolved into the water and it became a solution.
I asked the class if they wanted to taste the sugar and salt solutions and they all yelled "yes!"  Each child got two small plastic cups and into each one we poured a little of each solution.  As they tasted each one it was so funny watching the expression on their faces.  When they were all done we made a chart and wrote down who liked or disliked each one.  They enjoyed doing this experiment because it was hands on, they all participated in it, and they all got a chance to express which one they liked best.  Now they can tell you how to make a solution at home.

Science with the Puppies
The Puppies are growing and learning so much every day. This month's theme was science.   Science is all about exploring the world that we live in.  It  can be seen in the simplest of things, like pushin g a button on a toy and seeing what happens. The children enjoyed a project where we made different colored ice cubes and shook it in a metal tray with paper to see what image would be created as the ice melted.   Puppy teachers would also stress the words "soft, hard, loud, quiet" etc.  This also helps with their language skills and they learn new words.   Good job Puppies!

Science with the Turtles
For science this month, the Turtles did a lot of fun projects and activities. Since winter officially begins in December, we decided to do a project discussing animals that live in snowy areas. We learned about penguins and polar bears. We even made our own polar bears out of paper plates. In the block center we learned a little bit about gravity. We talked about how the snow and ice could cause a car or a person to slip if it was on a hill. Now we know we have to be careful when walking around in the snow and keep an eye out for cars.
Mr. Kenny also taught us a new song called, "Tiny Tim."  There is a line in the song that goes "bubbles, bubbles, pop!"  The children were very interested in the idea of bubbles and it has to do with science, so we decided to make our own bubbles in the classroom!  We used water, cups and dish soap, along with pipe cleaner wands to make our own bubbles!  It was a lot of fun!

Mathematicians

Math with the Bunnies
For the month of November, the Bunnies focused on math. Throughout our day, we try to incorporate counting with the kids in a variety of ways.  During Circle Time, we look at number flashcards.  In addition, we ask the children to point to certain parts of their body as well.  We ask questions such as, "Where are your feet?" and the Bunnies will kick out their feet.  The teachers will say, "You have two feet! One, two!"  At this time we are trying to encourage the children to repeat and count along with us.  During snack, we will count the amount of cookies or goldfish they get in front of them.
In the gym or the playground, the Bunnies love to run a lot, so we try to make it a race and say, "One, two, three, go!"  They always wait and then run as fast as they can.  A times, they even start over and imitate what the teachers say and start the race themselves!  Way to go Bunnies!

Math with the Dolphins
During the Month of December the Dolphins explored the theme of "Boxes." The Dolphins were also busy preparing for our Holiday Show and getting in the Holiday Spirit.  In the Math Center, students made AAB and ABB patterns using different colored boxes.  Students also sorted boxes according to size and color.  The Dolphins also made Candy Patterns as we decorated our class Gingerbread House! The Dolphins continued to practice patterning skills by making pipe cleaner and bead candy canes. The Dolphins continued to practice one to one correspondence by counting out how many marshmallows were in their hot cocoa cups and how many candy buttons were on different gingerbread people.   Student also built upon their pre-math skills by beginning to work on addition using the book 100 Snowmen.  The Dolphins were very busy this month in the math center!

Math with the Lions
"Rocking around the Christmas tree...," well the Lions were learning around the Christmas tree in December.  In the month of December, our focus was math and we decided to do something fun and festive.  We made a cardboard Christmas tree and added circles with different colors, like Christmas balls. Then we cut out corresponding circle colors for our game.  Instead of doing the same old counting, we took our math skills to a matching game with colors, almost like a pin the tail game.  Each child was called up one at a time and picked a "Christmas ball" out of the Santa hat. They then had to match it to the color on the tree.  We had such a fun time "decorating our tree" and learned so much!  I love when we play a game and the children don't realize they are learning.

Art with the SnuggliesII
The Snugglies 2 were very busy with Art Projects this month!  We used our handprints and footprints to get into the festive holiday season. First we made a Christmas Tree for our bulletin board using tracings of our handprints on green construction paper. Then we made a holiday ornament.  Our feet were painted white to make a Snowman on the wooden popsicle background and a string was tied on to hang from the tree.  Wreaths were also created using tracings of our handprints on green and red construction paper, and glued onto a paper plate. Our decorations made the room Merry & Bright!

Art with the Sunflowers
The Sunflowers really love creating their own works of art! They especially enjoy using paint, glitter, and pom-poms in their artwork.  Every morning, the Sunflowers look forward to their project of the day.  During the month of December, the Sunflowers made so many different wonderful projects using their artistic abilities.  The class favorite seemed to be the reindeer that we created using our foot prints and our hand prints!  Each child made two antlers using brown, washable paint and both of their hands.  Then, they used more brown paint and one of their feet to make the heads of the reindeer.  The children decorated their reindeer using brown glitter, googly eyes, and red pom-poms for the noses!  The children thought it was so silly when even Ms. Linda and Ms. Ally made their own reindeer!  Although this particular project got super messy, both the children and their teachers shared lots of laughs throughout the process.

Art with the Ducks
In the month of December, the Ducks learned about box themes. We had fun studying different shapes of boxes (like rectangles and squares) and talking about their uses. In the cooking center, we made gingerbread houses using rectangular graham crackers. In the art center, we made Christmas trees using sponge box shapes and green paint. In the art center, we made Snowmen bodies using square shapes and writing the letters of our names on each square. We also decorated our own rectangular picture frames and colored them with Christmas colors such as green and red and decorated them with holiday stickers. We also made paper Christmas color patterns using box shapes and decorated our classroom Christmas tree with them. In the math center, we talked about the shape of cubes and counted with dice. We rolled dice and counted the dots on the dice, we then placed that amount of marshmallows on our paper hot cocoa mugs.

Musicians in the Making

Music with the Kitties
One of the Kitties favorite things to do is sing!  Every day to start off circle time we sing songs.  We start with the song, "Hello Friends."  This song helps the children learn each other's names.  Now, they love to say, "Hi!" to each other when their friends come in. We also sing our "ABC's" and their favorite song, "Open Shut Them," a fun song to do with their hands.  This month we sang extra songs, Christmas songs!  They loved singing "Rudolph," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Jingle Bells!"  Oh what fun the Kitties had, singing all month long!

Music with the Monkeys
Falling Snow
See the pretty snowflake,
Falling from the sky,
On the wall and on the housetops,
Soft and thick they lie.

Happy New Year everyone!!  We are so excited 2018 has arrived.  Last month the Monkey's were preparing for the Christmas show.  During one of our rehearsals we went into the Music room.  At first we sang and danced to our Christmas show song "Christmas don't be late" by: The Chipmunks.  Then Miss Sara and I gave each child an instrument and we sang and played the instruments to our show song.  Then we gave each child a drum and only played the drums to our song. Steven said, "Miss Diane its too loud with drums.  My ears hurt."  Therefore, we aimed to hear what all the instruments sounded like with our Christmas song and to see which ones were louder or softer to our ears.  The Monkeys observed that drums were the loudest of all the instruments.  We also discussed that the bells were the softest sounding.  Consequently, a loud and soft lesson formed from just dancing and using instruments.  The Monkey created a lesson out of hearing and observing.

Music with the Pandas
During the month of December, one of the themes we learned all about, was "Boxes."  We had a special activity to share with you, with a special focus on MUSIC.  In the music center the Panda's made instruments using boxes.  The Panda's put different materials into a box, like rice, rocks and beads.  After putting the materials into the boxes the Panda's had so much fun shaking the boxes and hearing different sounds.
We also practiced for the holiday show and learned to sing and dance to many Christmas songs. The Panda's love Christmas music!

Gym time with the Bumblebees
The Bumblebees are always excited when it is time to visit the gym.  This month the Bumblebees learned the concept of 1st through 4th.  We decided to reinforce this concept during gym time.  Before the children enter the gym, they sit in a line outside.  We call each child one at a time to enter by saying, "First (name) may go.  Second (name) may go..." and so forth.  After the fourth child we begin again with "first."
Then, during our time in the gym, we did relay races where Ms. Karolina would say first goes so and so, then second, then third, and fourth. With this activity, the children had to listen to the order, and practice waiting patiently and taking turns.  Racing is one of the children's favorite activities!

Gym time with the Angels
The Angels really enjoy gym time and look forward to playing in the gym all morning long!  The Angels love to exercise! Whether it is relay races, riding bikes or even doing jumping jacks; the Angels always have a lot of fun while getting their bodies in motion.  The Angel class loves to count up to ten while doing the jumping jacks, and sometimes they even try to mimic their teachers and do other exercises such as sit-ups and push-ups as well!  The Angels always clap when they are finished and are eager to exercise with one another in the gym.

Tech time with the Bears
This month's theme, 'Boxes' was explored throughout all of the centers in the classroom. The students were able to engage in many multisensory activities.  During small group, the students explored with the smart board as we discussed about boxes. The children discussed how lots of things come in boxes, food, clothes, toys, and other things. The children had to sort a variety of items that we find in boxes.  The children had to click and drag into the correct box.  When the children got, the answer correct they heard applause.  The children had a great time working with each other to get the correct answer.   Some of the examples they had to sort were toys comes in a box, waffles come in a box, ice cream comes in a box, crayons comes in a box. The children had to click and drag the different items into the correct box.  This was a great activity for hand and eye coordination and the kids participated in these activities.
The Nurse's Station

New Happy New Year! As we welcome 2018, I would like to wish each and every one of you happiness and good health throughout the year.

Outdoor Activities and Asthma
Winter is finally here and despite the cold weather our children are participating in outdoor activities when weather conditions permit.  Children, who are prone to asthma, may experience attacks.  It is very important to make your child's teachers and administration aware.  If your child suffers from asthma, please see myself for a Medication Administration Form to be completed by the doctor.  Additionally, all inhalers and nebulizers are stored in the Nurse's office.

Please make sure your children are dressed warmly including gloves, hats, scarves and appropriate foot wear. Please take notice of replacing your child's spare clothing.

Physicals and Immunizations
As a reminder, please submit your child's annual physicals and immunizations in a timely manner. We are mandated by the Department of Health to keep record of all physicals and immunizations. Please refer to our Health Policy . Your child will not be allowed to attend Day Care/Pre-School without the appropriate updates and forms submitted.

Influenza
Please remember to vaccinate your child against the flu.  It is strongly recommended by the Board of Health for all children 6 months to 59 months of age, attending Day Care or Pre-K to receive the influenza vaccine.

Quotes
Angels
One afternoon while the Angels were doing an art project at the table, Max looked at his picture and said, "It's beautiful!"

Bumblebees
While reading a book about Hanukkah the children learned about the candles on a menorah.  When Jake saw the lit candles he yelled, "Happy Birthday!"

Bears
During lunch time the children were helping set up the tables.  Isabelle and Violet were handing out the bowls and placing on the table.  Isabelle looked at Violet and said, "Look Violet, Mrs. Kerin changed the dishes."   Violet said, "How did you change the dishes Mrs. Kerin."  I looked at what they were talking and said, "No honey, the ladies in the cafeteria decide to give you bowls because we have pasta and meatballs."  Both of the girls said, "Ooohhhhh!  Those girls are smart down there in the cafeteria."

Bunnies
While entering the classroom, Ms. Jasmine always says, "Hi babies," to all the kids and they scream "Hi" back.  One day Ashley M. decided to say it first and yell "Hi babies" when she came in and to any teacher that walked through the door that morning.

Dolphins
When we exited the stage after the Holiday show, Sophia shouted "We are all stars now!"

Ducks
We had so much fun creating our square Snowmen bodies using the letters of our names for each square.  When Michael made his Snowman, he said, "My snowman is tall."  Idriz said, "Mine is smaller."  Ms. Katie said, "Who has more letters in his name?"  Idriz said, "Michael!"  Ms. Katie said, "You're right! Good job counting the letters!"

Chipmunks
The girls were playing in the Kitchen Center during morning free play.   They were pretending to have a "tea party."  Half way through Mia said  to the girls, " It's time to clean up."  Ania looked at Mia and said, "No it's  not."  Mia responded, "Yes it is. I'm Miss. Nancy's assistant and it's time  to clean up for we are going to have snack now!" "

Kitties
While getting ready for our Holiday Show, every day we would practice our song and dance.  If it got late in the day and we hadn't done it yet, Avery would stand in the middle of the carpet and start waving her hands up and down like we did in our dance.  This would signal to Ms. Daisy and Ms. Ami that it was time to practice!

Lions
One afternoon, at nap time, Mason woke up and looked at Miss Jessica.  Miss Jessica asked if everything was okay.  Mason simply responded, "I love you Miss Jessica."  He then laid backed down and went back to sleep.

Monkeys
One afternoon Steven was bringing Miss Sara a tissue.  Adam said, "No! Steven...you do it, NOT... Miss Sara."

Pandas
After telling the Panda class about the holiday box exchange Michael said, "I cannot wait to decorate my box and share the box with a friend from the class!"  The whole class got so excited!

Sunflowers
During morning drop-off, Damian was saying goodbye to his nanny Gina.  She was half way out the door when he called after her, "I promise I won't be sassy today!"  All of the teachers thought it was so funny, especially since Damian is never sassy to anyone!

Turtles
While trying to build our gingerbread houses Emily came up to Miss Samantha and said, "Boy! You are sure doing a great job there!"
