14th Annual
Red Dress Event

On February 16, 2017, the YWCA held it's 14th Annual Red Dress 
event at the Century House in Acushnet to raise money for heart health. Guests began to arrive at 5:30pm to enjoy cocktail hour followed by dinner at 6:30pm. Guest Speaker Terry Monteiro captivated the audience with her heart disease story of survival. The night ended with an elegant fashion show.
All models were women in the community wearing beautiful red gowns from Fatima's Bridal, Dress Barn, Party Dress Express, Gilda's Bridal, New York Lace, and Celia's Boutique. Thank you to Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School Fashion Design students for designing
and modeling dresses for the fashion show. Our models were escorted by members of the New Bedford Police Department and students from local schools. Thank you also to our sponsors SouthCoast Health, Sylvia Group, BMC Health Net Plan, BayCoast Bank, BankFive, Senior Whole Health, First Citizens Federal Credit Union and AFC Urgent Care New Bedford. Thank you to Youth Build for building the runway and all of the donors for our silent auction.
Thank you to all who attended the event and to our committee, volunteers, board and staff that worked hard to make
this event possible. Thank you Century House for allowing us to host the event at your beautiful venue. Century House staff did an
excellent job serving all of our guests. All of our tickets, flyers and program books were donated by Monaghan's Printing Company. DJ Jordan Paiva did an outstanding job! Thank you for helping the YWCA raise money for a good cause and continue to improve the lives of people in the community.

On January 21st, the YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts united and marched with over 150,000 people in Boston in solidarity with communities most affected by hate, intolerance and perpetration of violence throughout the nation.

27th Annual Coats for Kids Drive
(and grown ups too)!
|
Every year, the YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts and the First Unitarian Church collect donated coats for adults and children. On December 10, 2016, at the 27th Annual Coats for Kids Drive,
hundreds of families were able to choose a warm coat for themselves and their children for the winter season. The coat drive was held at the First Unitarian Church on Union Street where volunteers from the community sorted, organized and dispersed coats to the public.

NEW POSITION AT MASSASOIT COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO PUSH FOR MORE DIVERSE FACULTY, PROGRAMS
|
The college's Board of Trustees voted in January to create this new position, which reshapes Yolanda Dennis' role as Executive Officer of Diversity and Inclusion to incorporate affirmative action and other diversity initiatives. Yolanda is a past Vice-President of the YWCA Board of Directors.
The board has discussed this role change for over a year in less concrete terms, and finally voted last month to move forward with putting all diversity-focused programs and plans under one umbrella.
"This is the new norm as far as colleges and universities," Dennis said. "In light of protests at colleges around the country, notably in Missouri, a lot of schools are moving towards having a Chief Diversity Officer."
She has worked at Massasoit for four years, and in that time, said, "We've made some progress, and we have more work to do."

2016 Dartmouth Woman of the Year:
YWCA Volunteer, Judy Viera
|
"For nearly 25 years, widow Judy Viera has been someone other widows and widowers can talk to and trust as they try to cope with the loss of a loved one. She knows the sense of struggle personally, having lost her husband in 1991, around the time the long-running Widowed Persons Support Program at the Council on Aging got started.
"It's been my pleasure to help others going through that loss," Viera said. "I know what it's like ... it's the worst thing that can happen when you're happily married."
So on the first and third Fridays of each month, the 91-year-old volunteers to sit in on the Dartmouth support group at the senior center as a facilitator, helping to mediate the conversations and lending a friendly ear to people looking for some company, some help, and or just a little support in their healing process."
