 ADS-B Airspace: Is Your General Aviation Airport Inside or Near It?
Some general aviation aircraft owners may not recognize the consequences of waiting to install Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Out until they discover in 2020 that they cannot easily fly out of their home airport. Many general aviation airports are located in or near airspace that requires ADS-B equipage. Without ADS-B Out on board, pilots will need to seek exceptions from air traffic controllers to depart from their home airport, which might not be granted or could lead to delays.
Pilots who fly from general aviation airports in or near congested airspace may not have studied how Class B and C airspace or a Mode C veil might affect their operations to and from their home airport. ADS-B Out is required in all three of these types of airspace under the FAA rule.
You should confirm whether the various types of ADS-B airspace around some general aviation airports could affect your operations.

 AEA Extends Application Deadline to May 26 for Sporty's Scholarship
The AEA Educational Foundation has extended the application deadline for one of its scholarship offerings. Sponsored by The Sporty's Foundation, applicants now have until May 26 to apply for one of two scholarships that will be awarded to an employee of an AEA repair station member company, which must be used for achieving a recreational pilot certificate. The award will cover flight training costs only, and the recipient must plan to pursue a recreational pilot certificate within six months of receiving the scholarship.  BasicMed Begins
On Monday, April 24, the FAA announced that general aviation pilots can now prepare to fly under BasicMed without holding an FAA medical certificate if they meet certain requirements. They can fly under BasicMed beginning May 1, the effective date of the Jan. 10 final rule. It offers pilots an alternative to the FAA's medical qualification process for third-class medical certificates, while keeping general aviation pilots safe and flying affordable. More...
2016 General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey Cleared for Takeoff
The 39th annual General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey is now underway. It is the Federal Aviation Administration's primary source of information about the size and activity of the general aviation and on-demand Part 135 fleet. The survey is conducted on behalf of the FAA by Tetra Tech, an independent research firm, and all survey responses are confidential. Tetra Tech would like to hear from everyone who received an invitation to complete the survey to prepare accurate statistics on aviation activity. ASPEN AVIONICS
donated an Evolution Pro 1000 Primary Flight Display to the Collings Foundation for installation in the last airworthy F-4 Phantom in the United States.
GARMIN announced the availability of the G5000H integrated flight deck upgrade for the existing fleet of Sikorsky S-70 and UH-60A/L Black Hawk helicopters through Global Aviation Solutions.
DUNCAN AVIATION received a new authorization from Rolls-Royce and is approved for CorporateCare and new engine warranty work on aircraft at all Duncan Aviation facilities and remote work locations. Also, DAVID COLEMAN joined the company's Aircraft Sales & Acquisitions team.
UNIVERSAL AVIONICS SYSTEMS CORP. announced a
new, certified Bombardier Q400 solution for ADS-B Out and LPV capability; STC ST02780CH was issued by the FAA and the EASA and awarded to Canard Aerospace Corp. The solution includes the Universal Avionics UNS-1Ew Satellite-Based Augmentation System-Flight Management System.
KENT INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT's Kent Career Technical Center announced that 20 high school junior and senior students earned their NCATT AET certification this spring and several more were awarded multiple NCATT endorsement certifications. These students are enrolled in KCTC's Aircraft Electronics Program located at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan. All are preparing for careers in the avionics industry. They will continue their education with learning and practicing avionics installations, testing, troubleshooting, and using common test equipment prior to graduation.
INTERCONTINENTAL JET SERVICE CORP. is offering a dual Garmin GTN 750 avionics package for Piaggio P180 Avanti 1 aircraft operators. The upgrade adds SBAS, LPV, ADS-B, and XM weather to the flight deck.
GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE CORP.'s super mid-size Gulfstream G280 recently completed two missions en route to and from the 2017 Avalon Airshow, each achieving a city-pair world speed record. The G280 has amassed more than 60 city-pair speed records since its 2012 entry into service.
PRO STAR AVIATION completed its first Advent Aircraft System eABS modification on a King Air 300 series aircraft; a King Air 350i. The installation was performed during the first two weeks of April in the company's main hangar in New Hampshire at the request of a customer looking to retrofit a King Air 350i with ABS technology similar to the company's larger ABS-equipped jets. In addition, Pro Star Aviation
received approval for FAA STC number SA00380BO -- Installation of a
Geneva Digital Audio System (for Cessna 208B's). The STC is applicable to Textron
Aviation 208B models serial numbers 208B1190 thru 1216 and 208B2000 equipped with a Garmin G1000 Integrated Flight Deck, and supports the installation of Eagle Audio's (formerly Geneva Aviation) Generation II Digital Audio System, providing for multiple tactical radio inputs typical for use in law enforcement and special missions operations.
JEPPESEN agreed to a five-year digital services agreement with Tunisair to provide Tunisair with FliteDeck Pro electronic flight bag on iPad, tailored charting services and OpsData aircraft performance management tools.
BARFIELD pledged to award an 1811NG to the winner of the School category and a DFQ40K to the winner of the Airline and MRO category of the Aerospace Maintenance Competition at MRO Americas in Orlando.
HONEYWELL received an FAA technical standard order certification, which approves the design and production of its Integrated Multi-Mode Receiver, for the air transport industry's all-digital receiver to consolidate multiple navigation functionalities into a single unit.
SHADIN AVIONICS announced the delivery of the first production ADS-B Out Fight ID Adapter for integration of the Collins TDR-94/94D transponder. The delivery is one of many anticipated over the next three years resolving the missing flight ID issue for this application. The company also was able to demonstrate the wide application of its AIS-380 configurable converter platform with Advent Aircraft Systems' recent successful flight test of a Pilatus PC-12NG utilizing the eABS anti-skid braking system.
THOMAS GLOBAL SYSTEMS signed an agreement with interCaribbean Airways in relation to Thomas Global's TFD-8601 cockpit display, a plug-and-play LCD replacement for aging CRT displays in corporate and regional aircraft, including the Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia.
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS & SUPPORT entered into an agreement with Lufthansa Technik based in Germany, to partner as a distributor and installation center for IS&S Cockpit/IP Flat Panel Display System for Classic Series Boeing 737 and 757/767 and its Integrated Standby Unit at all of its locations throughout the world.
FLIGHTSAFETY INTERNATIONAL promoted RACHEL RUNNER to assistant manager of the company's Cessna Learning Center in Wichita, Kansas.
ROCKWELL COLLINS announced that an upgrade to its Pro Line Fusion integrated avionics for the Cessna Citation CJ3 business jet has been certified by the FAA.
AVMAX recently purchased four Fokker F50 aircraft msn 20223, 20243, 20244, 20250 and one spare engine from Flugfelag Islands EHF (Air Iceland), part of the Icelandair Group. In turn, Avmax sold one Dash 8-Q202 msn 450 to Flugfelag Islands EHF (Air Iceland).
