A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
Performing Mitzvoth and connecting with other faith communities should be a part of what any Jewish community does. Over these last few weeks, our commitment to our interfaith connection has been highlighted.
Last week I participated in an interfaith panel discussion at St. Marry's Parish Center in Manahawkin. The program was entitled "Many Voices-One Message: Public Dialogue on Cultural Diversity & Respect" and it featured 10 clergy, from across the faith spectrum, discussing what our faith traditions have to say about the proliferation of vitriolic dialogue in today's world.
The program was attended by over 200 people and was a special evening. Look for a Blog post from me on "Brachas From the Beach" that will highlight several of the lessons I learned from the clergy in attendance.
On Tuesday evening Rona Stein and I attended the

Rona Stein |
Health & Support Services volunteer recognition dinner. Interfaith's is
a coalition of different faith communities, social service, and health care organizations that provides volunteer physical, emotional and spiritual support to those living at home who are vulnerable because of age or disability. Much of what Interfaith does, through its volunteers, is, among other things, to drive people to doctor appointments or to the supermarket.
Below is the Prayer that Rona Stein read at the dinner. I think you will find it to be quite moving and appropriate.
NO RELIGION IS AN ISLAND
(Adapted By Rabbi Michael S. Jay and Rona Stein from a prayer by Abraham Joshua Heschel,
Siddur Sim Shalom, p. 359)
No religion is an island;
There is no monopoly on holiness.
We are companions of all who revere God.
We rejoice when the Divine Name is praised.
No religion is an island;
We share the kinship of humanity,
the capacity for compassion.
God's spirit rests upon all faiths,
Man or woman, in consonance with their deeds.
There is no monopoly on holiness;
There is no truth without humility.
We are diverse in our devotion and commitment.
With the common goal of bringing dignity, hope, and strength
to those individuals in need.
Let us pray for each other's welfare.
Remembering that the hand of God is extended to all who seek Him.
If anyone has an interest volunteering for this organization they should feel free to reach out to me or Rona Stein.
Finally, this Shabbat, Friday, May 5th, the JCC will be having its annual Interfaith Service. In addition to inviting folks from our surrounding faith communities, and hearing choral numbers from the Island Singers, we will have the privilege of hearing Pastor Roy Minnix deliver a short sermon. Pastor Minnix is a regular at our Saturday morning torah study class and consistently provides wise and endearing insight. He is
a graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary and has served in the ministry for 44 years at 4 different parishes in South Dakota, New York, Maryland and most recently in Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey.
He has been involved in a ministry to the American Indians, community organizing, with a focus on community policing, and has served as the Director of a Christmas In April program, serving families in need In Ocean County.
Roy and Anita, his wife of 47 years have 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren.
They have also provided foster care to 23 children and sponsored 4 refugee families.
Now retired, Pastor Minnix is busy as a vacancy pastor and an addiction and mental health counselor, as well as a Student of the Torah.
We are always and active and busy congregation and community and joining with the faith communities around us helps us to fulfill the words of the first verse of Psalm 133:
"How good and how pleasant it is for brothers and sisters to dwell together in unity"
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.
Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
AUDIO/VISUAL PROJECT
We are very excited about the decision of the Board of Directors to pursue the enhancement of the audio system for the JCC of LBI as well as the purchase of a projection system. This multi-phased project will allow us to become a venue for expanded programming and opens us up to many wonderful opportunities for future planning. Your gift large or small is much appreciated. Please send your contribution to the JCC office: 2411 Long Beach Blvd., Spray Beach, NJ 08008 and note on the memo line A/V Project.
Space is available for memorial plaques on the yahrzeit boards in the Sanctuary. Here is the order form:
