"God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son,
so that everyone who believes in him might not perish
but might have eternal life."

From Mrs. Rowley

Welcome back. I hope that you all enjoyed a peaceful Easter. It is so good to see the students back - now we just need some spring-like weather! We are on the final stretch and a lot is happening. Hopefully we are all reenergized physically and spiritually. Our 5 th and 8 th grade students got right back into work with the administration of the NCEA Acre testing yesterday. This is an annual test given to students in these grades on Religion content.

Our 7 th graders will be heading to Gettysburg on their annual trip on Thursday, under the expert guidance of Captain Don Ditko. We are grateful to Captain Ditko for his dedicated service to our school in providing this incredible opportunity each year.

On Friday we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Harold Burgess from NIH, for a special assembly for our 5 th -8 th graders. This presentation will be about how much we learn about our brains by observing fish!

On May 8 round 3 of Scantron testing begins. As before we will start with 6 th and 7 th grades, followed by 4 th and 5 th grades, and finally 3 rd grade. Please remember to have your children in school on time during their testing week.

Have a great week!

Pop Tops for Ronald McDonald House

For the past two years, our school students have been collecting pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC.  Last June, Mrs. Kiernan donated our entire collection of more than 19 lbs of pop tabs to the RMHC office located on the campus of the INOVA Hospital on Gallows Road.

Let's see if we can top our previous donation this year!!  It is a great way to teach our children about philanthropy and the importance of recycling while raising funds to help sick children and their families.  Help us to help them...

Collection containers are in each classroom and the 6th graders will periodically pick up all pop tabs from each homeroom.  The RMHC sells the metal tabs and all funds support their cause. You can find the pop tabs on soda cans, some soup or vegetable cans, cat food cans, etc.

Thank you for your help in supporting this worthy cause.

Concussions

What Is A Concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury that causes temporary changes in the way the brain works. You might think they happen when someone is knocked unconscious while playing sports. But concussions can happen with any head injury, often without a loss of consciousness.

We often hear about head injuries in athletes, but most concussions happen off the playing field - in car and bicycle accidents, in fights, and even minor falls.

About Concussions
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. The brain is made of soft tissue and is cushioned by spinal fluid. It is encased in the hard, protective skull. The brain can move around inside the skull and even bang against it. If the brain bangs against the skull - for example, in a fall on a playground or a whiplash-type of injury - blood vessels can tear and the nerves inside the brain can be injured. These injuries can cause a concussion.

Anyone who has a head injury should be watched closely for signs of a concussion, even if the person feels OK. An undiagnosed concussion can put someone at risk for brain damage and even disability. So a doctor should see anyone who has any symptom of a concussion right away.
