2018 Wellness Retreat ~ May 5-6, 2018
|
 Coming this spring, our next national Retreat with veterinarians, scientists, and teachers who know how to make learning fun! Problem-Solving is the theme. Some problems we can't avoid - such is life. Other problems we can prevent, and that's always the best solution. In both cases, knowing how to address these issues can make all the difference for birds, both in the wild and in our homes. Some of Our Many Adoptable Birds, Rehoming the Rehomed
|
Almost every bird will need more than one home. Sometimes it is because people have not taken time to understand how to live successfully with a parrot; but most often it is simply because our lives change. It's no ones fault, it's just what needs to happen. So it is really important that we promote adoption as a positive way to find a bird companion. Featured this month are birds that have been in the Phoenix Landing adoption program for many years, and are now ready for their next good family. We also encourage everyone to never stop learning about how to provide a positive, healthy life for the birds in their care.  DAISY and PETEY are wild caught Moluccan cockatoos. These birds came to us on an urgent personal request from the late Dr. Zantop back in 2006, they were his clients for many years. Apparently the husband had died, and his wife couldn't care for them. They were originally named Tikki I and Tikki II. They were then adopted through Phoenix Landing and renamed Petey and Daisy. Now it's time for their next Phoenix Landing home.
Daisy is at least 33 years old, and Petey 37. Petey was blind in one eye when he came to us, the relinquisher
said he lost his eye because of a "mechanical injury at purchase" - whatever that means! He already had a naked chest when he came to us.
Daisy and Petey are now in a Maryland foster home. Daisy is vitamin A deficient, so her diet will need to focus on those orange and green foods like papaya, mango, carrots, sweet potatoes, and greens. Petey likes wood block type toys, and Daisy likes more shreddable toys. We plan to send them a care package, want to participate? Wild caught birds deserve extra special help!

PIPPY and MIKEY
are male cockatiels. Mikey is 11 years old, Pippy's age is unknown. They were originally relinquished by different families, but both were anxious for a cockatiel friend. Cockatiels definitely enjoy being around other cockatiels, and we find pairing them with the same gender works well. Pippy and Mikey are now good friends. They have just returned from their last Phoenix Landing home. As soon as they returned to The Landing, they dove into our mash. They spend their day rooting around the grains and veggies, especially the kamut. They also avidly devour fresh greens, it's amazing how much they can consume! These two charmers are also good fliers. They may not be interested in jumping onto your hands, but they are not afraid of people and are very entertaining.

Peg's Second Chance, A Hopeful End to the Year
|
Last Thursday, SEAVS veterinary office in Fairfax, VA called Jenny Drummey (our Virginia Coordinator) and said that an 18-week old Eclectus had been left there; her leg had been severely injured by a towel. For her survival it had to be amputated immediately, but they needed someone to care for her post-surgery, and to find her a home thereafter. Jenny agreed that Phoenix Landing could do that. Debbie Russell (our Maryland Coordinator) stepped up to be her caretaker. She has named her Peg.
Peg did well in surgery and is now eating lots of nutritious foods at Debbie's house! She will need recovery time and
many bandage changes before we can find her a home. To learn more about Peg and her story, read her blog post at

2018 "Step-Up" Workshop Dates

2018 workshop dates now set: March 23-25 (almost full) and August 10-12. This intensive 3-day event is designed to give people an abundance of information about parrot care,
from behavior and health, to nutrition and enrichment. In addition to lectures, there will be hands-on
training sessions, cooking classes, and time to discuss issues of specific importance to you. We will work with
the adoptable birds at the Phoenix Landing facility, so you can teach behavior, foraging and feeding new foods first hand. All of us can learn new things to improve our relationships with our parrots. Anyone with parakeets to macaws will benefit!
