Haiti Mission Update
The following report comes from PJ May, chair of the Global Mission Committee,
who recently traveled to Haiti with a team.
Recently, Pastor Steve and a small team of pastors and leaders went to Haiti to strengthen relationships and have conversation about the ongoing partnership between the synod and the ELH (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti). It was clear that God was present in the meetings, the conversation and sharing, the singing and prayers, and throughout the trip. There is renewed strength and vision in the ELH that was evident throughout our time together.

Tree Planting Ceremony
Faith Lutheran Church held a Tree Planting Ceremony
in honor of the 500th Ann
iversary of Reformation and Earth Day 2017. Pastor Mel Schroeder presided. Pastor Larry Wright and Rev. Dr. Robert Mursch were in attendance. Candi Messerschmidt, W.I.L.D. Women Co-Leader, Patty McKee, Church Council Chair, Karen Berwick, Green Team & Memorial Garden Chair, and Eloise Dettmer, History Committee Coordinator, graciously volunteered to read each part of the invitation for the ceremony. Gary Claxon, Church Sexton and Linda Urgo, Faith's Remaining Founder, planted the tree, with the help of the children who attended. Dr. Joseph Holt, Music Director, lead the Voices of Faith Choir, in the well known hymn, "For the Beauty of the Earth", to conclude the ceremony.
Eloise Dettmer and Karen Berwick, selected the tree, a Dwarf Poinciana (Caesalpinia Pulcherrima) which will stand, with its delicate, yellow blooms, as a commemoration of Faith's solidarity to the church's worldwide work towards unification among all followers of Christ for future generations. The tree planting was originally planned to mark Faith's 50th Anniversary and it will later be marked with a plaque to honor all three events; Faith's 50th, Reformation's 500th Anniversary and Earth Day 2017.
Blessing of the Tree
O God of solar systems and grains of sand, elephants and infants, mountains and microbes, bless this tree to live among us as a message of hope for the future and a reminder of your call to care for all Creation. As its roots grow deep and strong, may our faith grow ever deeper and more compassionate. As its branches open wide to the sky, may our arms open wide to embrace the greatest and smallest of your creatures. As its leaves provide food and oxygen, may we provide food for the hungry and hope for the lost. Bless this tree as a living reminder of your love and grace always among us. Amen.
More about 500th Anniversary Tree Plantings:
500 Years of Reformation--500 Trees in Wittenberg
"Even if I knew that the world were to collapse tomorrow, I would still plant my apple tree today" (ascribed to Martin Luther).
In 2017, Lutheran churches will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (Jubilee) that had its beginnings in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

"God Colors Outside the Lines" Bible Study
May 25th -- 6:30 pm
Are we being insightful as to how God wants us to live? Come join us Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 pm in fellowship hall and see how God teaches us to "Color Outside the Lines". We will learn how to do that while having a fun time as well as eat a snack or two.
To make it more interesting, we ask you to bring a few towels of different sizes along with 2 oven mitts and a paper-covered plastic straw (such as you get at McDonald's or so). Intrigued?? Then join us to read and study the scripture while having fun!!
Sign up in fellowship hall if you will be attending. Questions? Contact Sue Rice at 955-0489 or [email protected].

Light refreshments will be served to help us fuel our creativity and thought process.
Please sign up in fellowship hall on the bulletin board so our hostesses have an idea of how many are attending.
If you have ideas but won't be able to attend the meeting, please share them with W.I.L.D. Co-Leaders Candi Messerschmidt (926-4113 or [email protected]) or Tricia Winemiller (496-2980 or [email protected]). W.I.L.D. Women
2016 Annual Report
The Women in Lutheran/Loving Devotion were blessed with many ministry opportunities this year. We are a group of busy women of all ages who meet for a great variety of activities that include faith-filled fellowship, heartfelt devotions, meaningful service and delightful fun.
We give thanks for the following activities we undertook, guided by the Holy Spirit and powered by God's great love.
--Hosted a "Valentines for Vets" card-crafting event, in which over 50 valentine cards were handmade and then delivered to a local veterans clinic.
-We hand-tied fleece lap robes as our spring service project for Faith's shut-ins.
--Prepared and presented our historical items to be placed in the 50th Anniversary Time Capsule.
--Hosted our annual Spring Luncheon and Raffle Basket Sale, with raffle proceeds donated to the Make a Wish Foundation. Attendees also donated towels for Lutheran World Relief personal care kits.
--Hosted a "Christmas in July" Chrismon crafting workshop.
--Provided a fall wreath making workshop that was very popular.
--Joined together for fellowship meals together at local restaurants.
--Held fall meeting open to congregation, with speaker Kay Kipling, Arts Editor of the Sarasota Magazine.
--Provided a nature printing class led by professional artist, using Thrivent Action Grant funds. The class attendees created beautiful prints, which were then matted and packaged for sale. Proceeds from the sale of these items were given to Novus Way Ministries for Lutheridge camper scholarships.
--Three representatives attended the Florida Synodical Women's Organization Fall Gathering in November, and took donations of monetary and in-kind gifts for the FLSWO's designated charity.
--Participated and assisted in Faith's annual Cookie Walk.
--Hosted a Christmas potluck meal and party, inviting all women of Faith.
During our events, we include devotional time and share news of members' needs. We also maintain active e-mail communication among our members, and are ready to provide meals and offer prayer for those in need.
We continue to espouse the mission & purpose statement of the Women of the ELCA:
"As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world."
We give thanks to be part of the ministry at Faith Lutheran and of the Greater Church.
To God Be the Glory!
Respectfully submitted,
Candi Messerschmidt and Tricia Winemiller, WILD Co-Chairs

30th Anniversary of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
April 30, 2017, is considered the 30th anniversary of the ELCA, as that is the date of the opening of the Constituting Convention and adoption of the ELCA Constitution. The first session opened with the three bishops from the predecessor bodies pouring water from three separate containers into one baptismal font. The ELCA was formed from a merger of three Lutheran churches - the American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches and the Lutheran Church in America.
During the convention, rosters were presented from the secretaries of those three churches; rules of procedure were adopted; the first ballot of presiding bishop was held; and the constitution, constitution for synods and constitution for congregations were adopted. The Rev. Herbert W. Chilstrom was elected first presiding bishop of the ELCA.

School Ends, Hunger Begins - Part 4
There are 40,000 kids in Sarasota and Desoto Counties who will need our help finding nutritious food this summer. No one can tell by looking at a child that he or she is hungry. Because smiles mask it and laughter muffles it, child hunger is deceptive, and it exists everywhere. Please join the Campaign Against Summer Hunger. Every dollar donated is matched, from now until May 15.

Finance Team Report for 1st Quarter 2017
Below is a financial table that reflects our current status at the end of the 1st quarter.
- Our weekly offerings are down about 13% or approximately $12,000 from this same time period in 2016.
- Our building rentals are up by $7,000 so this helps to offset some of this deficit.
- Our cash flow should sustain us through the end of April, but we will soon be facing the lean months of summer.
- Our operating expenses remain fairly constant throughout the year so that is not expected to change much over the summer.
- We are behind in revenue now (at 23% of budget) and expenses are over (at 27% of budget).
Thank you for your continued support through your talents and treasures. Your commitment to the work of Jesus Christ through our church, allows our mission and ministries to grow.
