KEY BISCAYNE AND BEYOND!!!

Welcome to Key Insights Newsletter
JANUARY 2018 Edition!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

This month it is my privilege take over as
Chair of the Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce so my Newsletter will focus more on Key Biscayne events and Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce Business promotion. I am very passionate about supporting and advocating for our local businesses. We are blessed to live on an Island with world class amenities, restaurants and merchants.

As a life-long resident and Realtor on Key Biscayne, I love sharing upcoming events and Interesting activities offered around our community for the residents and frequent visitors of our Island  Paradise.

My father, Federico Padovan, moved our family (including grandparents) to Key Biscayne in 1973. I was raised  on the Island and left briefly to earn a BFA degree at NYU. But my heart was always here so I returned to my Island Paradise home where I am raising 4th generation Key Biscayners with my husband Donnie Hall.

To read more about me,
We also have three lovely contributors sharing their insights as well! Please see their monthly articles at the bottom of each newsletter.

I want to sincerely THANK all of you for the wonderful feedback and interest in participating in our Newsletter
over the  last 2 years!!!

Friday, January 26, 2018
6:00pm- 11:00pm
The Rusty Pelican
 3201 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne

The 13th Annual Rotary Key Biscayne Wine & Food Fest will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm at Th Rusty Pelican.
The evening's proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation (RCKBF) and its affiliated charities for adults and children.
The proceeds from this event qualify for multiple matching grants.   Over the past four years, the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne has successfully obtained matching grants from local Rotary District 6990 and The Rotary International Foundation in Evanston, IL exceeding $300,000 to maximize the charitable impact of this fundraiser.
Rotary is excited to announce that The Nobis Foundation, a Miami nonprofit organization, will be added to the list of beneficiaries. The Nobis Foundation makes strategic philanthropic co-investments in indigent rural communities in Ecuador. This year's co-investment will focus on expanding educational opportunities for rural communities outside of Guayaquil and will also involve a partnership with the Rotary Club of Guayaquil and a continued collaboration with Fundación Manos Del Sur, a Miami-based non-profit providing assistance to disadvantaged children in Latin America in the areas of education, health and nutrition.
The fundraiser will feature thirteen varietals from the New World competing against wines from the Old World to earn recognition as "Best of Show" in each class.  In addition, The ARC of South Florida members will organize a silent auction and receive part of the proceeds to fund its programming. Auction lots will consist of items, including travel, restaurant vouchers, sports memorabilia, and select goods and services.
Shari Gherman , president of the American Fine Wine Competition & Gala, is our wine director again this year and five noted wine professionals will be judging these exciting wines: Patrick Sullivan, Wine Educator and professional Wine Judge; Wendy Rosano, Sommelier and Certified Specialist of Wine; Roberto Colombi, Sommelier and GM of The Blue in the Boca Raton Resort, Jacqueline Coleman, Sommelier and Vino columnist for Biscayne Times Newspaper and Delius Shirley, owner of Ortanique on the Mile in Coral Gables and professional Wine Judge, will complete the professional Judging panel.
All presented wines have been graciously supplied by Strategic Importers and will be available for sale at the event through Wine Date , our official wine retailer.  Wine Date will coordinate all orders, payment, delivery and pick-up, and will donate 10 percent of sale proceeds to the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation.  A variety of food delicacies prepared by several prominent South Florida restaurants are included in the price of admission.

How To Make New Year's Resolutions That You Can Actually Keep!
Every January 1st, people create their list of ALL the changes they want to make for the New Year.  The difficulty is in CHANGE! Being a psychologist for 20 years, I bear witness to how difficult change can be, even for those who seek therapy to help with those changes. Adding stress by having unrealistic goals will decrease your chances of keeping your New Year's resolutions.

These tips will help you be successful in the year to come:

1) Make manageable goals/resolutions. If you set the goal too high, you lose confidence and give up trying. For example, if you want to lose 30 pounds, make the goal of 1-2 pounds a week with a dietician's guidance and exercise regime. Or if you want to start exercising, start slow and build up. With each step towards your goal, you will be reinforced to continue.

2) Write it down. A written list holds a bit more credibility than discussing over champagne on New Year's Eve. You can keep a written record of progress, which increases motivation to continue towards your goal.

3) Be specific. If you write down specific goals, it is likely that you have given more thought to your resolutions and will have some direction. Instead of "exercise" being your resolution, write down what kind of exercise (class, trainer, on your own), how often you will exercise, and what time of day you will exercise. You will have more success if you create your own individualized program.

4) Be patient. Whether it is physical or emotional, change takes time. It took time to develop bad habits and will take time to develop good ones. With each step, you will be closer to your goal. Your body and your mind need time to adjust to change.

5) Get support. Once a goal or idea is spoken, it has more energy to manifest. You may decide that outside support would be helpful to reach your goal. Talk to a friend or speak to a professional. You may want a trainer to help you begin your exercise program aimed at specific goals. You may want to speak to a therapist to address changes necessary to decrease your stress or to improve you relationships at work or at home.

Remember the only thing Constant is Change. Wishing you a happy, healthy, and successful 2018!

I Have Decided
So many times in our lives we have to make a multitude of decisions, some more significant than others, of course. Decision making is an inevitable component of the human experience. But when you have one of those life-altering resolutions to make (unlike "what am I having for breakfast today?"), remain headstrong and don't look back, especially when you know it's in your best interest.
It's easy to fall into the trap of shoulds, coulds and would haves, but staying focused and on track will help you align with your goal. Once you choose the direction you're headed, the universe rallies to support you in your decision because it is mirroring what is going on inside you. Just as well, if you look back with doubt and what ifs, then that's what you'll get: a hodgepodge of insecurity and mixed results.
No one said it was easy to take on the challenge of changing a bad habit, make a career change or lose twenty pounds, for example. However, when you begin thinking like the person you want to become as if it's already present in your life, before you know it you've effortlessly become that new person. That kind of alignment is not only rewarding, it will also inspire those around you to reap the rewards of motivated determination.

5 Biggest Lessons In Life And Business
At the end of every year, I find myself incredibly introspective and reflective of the lessons learned over the last 12 months. The theme for me in 2017 was surrounded by the words "fixing" and "building" to find my alignment for future endeavors.
Below are 5 of the most important lessons I learned in 2017. My intention by sharing my notes is to perhaps awaken your own lessons or give a sense of serenity that often life has challenges and struggles.

FORGIVENESS: I have an estranged relationship with my mother and through out the last 20 years, its been a mix of healing and realities. Our relationship was never healthy and I found peace in loving her from afar. As my Priest advised me years ago, she has shelter, food and is taken care of and loving from afar was best for me and my family. Having not received a gift from her in decades, this year she mailed me two gifts that actually stunned me. It took me a few days to even open the package as I was scared of its contents. I debated on whether to accept or not accept the gifts as I felt all sorts of emotions, negative ties and soulful sell out sensations. I placed meanings on these two gifts that she has sent over the last few months and it spun my mind into chaos and re-living memories.
THE LESSON:  Through discussing it with my closest friends, I accepted the gifts. Friends shared their perspective that it was perhaps her only way of apologizing. She was attempting to be a mother and this was the venue she selected. Forgiveness in this scenario has been quite difficult. But a sort of deep and profound healing has started to take place and the few positive memories are starting to surface. I now personally understand that forgiveness is more for ourselves than for the others and at times a catalyst of events can pivot the focus on to love. I find that I am starting to forgive more than I ever thought possible. Forgiveness heals your heart and allows you to love more abundantly.
SURRENDER: One of my best friends committed suicide in October and it was a new found pain I had not felt before. He lived in Europe and I knew he was battling mental illness over the last year. Before his passing and through conversations, he reassured me that he was fine and on the mend. Our conversations were positive and he did indeed sound back to himself. I started to believe that he was alright and that his depression was a thing of the past. The devastating call informing me of his passing by his own choosing gave me a feeling of severe guilt in addition to the deep sadness. Could I have done more to save him?
THE LESSON:  Sometimes in life we have to surrender to situations no matter how much we wished the situation was different. I struggled so much trying to find the peace in the situation and the resolve of what I could have done to change the outcome. At the end, the feeling of surrendering to what is and what was took over. I surrendered to the finality and found peace. I recognized that he made a choice feeling that it was his only choice. I also surrendered to the concept that although physically he is no longer around, he will always be a spiritual presence in my life.
RELEASE: This year I removed the last pieces of toxic relationships that have engulfed me for years. At times, we don't feel we have options to release relationships, friendships or situations. We feel stuck and without power to change scenarios closest to us. This year, I made the decision to remove all remaining toxic relationships [no matter how difficult the transition would be]. I released and let go there after love and success flourished.
THE LESSON:  We often feel helpless and stuck in scenarios but when we truly find clarity for "what is", regardless of its clothing, solutions arrive that release us. I feel more free as a result, life has become more colorful in beauty and a heaviness in my heart has left. Release the relationships that do not serve your higher purpose. Those that surround you define your life.
ALIGNMENT: This year I found my search for alignment in accordance to my vision to be at the strongest height in comparison to years past. The sense of my purpose and its connection to others really became clear and as a result drastic changes were made.
THE LESSON:  Through the noise and loudness of life, we may lose our site of our own ultimate vision and purpose. We get bog down with standard rotations of work and life. The more days we are without clarity; the more days lead us away from our vision. Regularly taking time away from our daily living, to sit in peace and stillness, provides the ability to reflect, refocus and align. Every step we take should be in complete alignment to our vision. The alignment and persistence to get to the vision is success in its simplest form.
BELIEF: This year was also the year where my belief was tested and triumphed. My intuition, my gut and my senses proved to be accurate which strengthened my belief in myself. For years, I didn't trust my intuition 100% and I often got into unfavorably situations as a result. This year, I followed by gut more than ever and it led me into amazing opportunities.
THE LESSON:   We often dismiss our intuition and have our brains sort out the reasons why and why not. We allow the brain to process the choices and paths in our way. When we give our intuition, gut, and belief the respect it needs, it will most often lead us into a beautiful place that our brain couldn't grasp. When you use your intuition more and repeatedly, it repays you in strength and wisdom. Believe in yourself and what your heart tells you.

For 2018, I have already created themes for myself and used my reflection on past mistakes and successes to redefine my action plans. 2017 was about flushing out old notions of what no longer serves and 2018 is the rebirth with new strength and vigor. I am so incredibly excited for 2018.
Wishing you a beautiful New Year... may it be filled with magic and the fulfillment of your dreams.
