There are many misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity and the work we do. Some people think we give houses away. Others may think that Habitat's work is done only in the U.S. when in fact Habitat for Humanity operates in nearly 70 countries around the globe.

Dave Zablotny had the privilege of participating in a trip to the Dominican Republic this past January with 11 other Executive Directors from around the U.S. The purpose was to better understand how tithe funding from U.S. affiliates is used there to help eliminate substandard housing. To really appreciate your present and look to the future, it is important to first acknowledge your past. That's why, with our 150th home well underway, we are using this #TBT to go back all the way to our very first home. Completed in the summer of 1990, Habitat Cabarrus' first home was for Angela Grier and her daughter Fallon. This build marked the beginning of a life changing movement in Cabarrus County. Help us build the next 150 homes!

While our main ask is $15/mo from 150 donors, we would welcome any monthly gift that would provide an even greater impact. We would be thrilled to have one-time donations of $150 or $1,500 as well!

In celebration of the collaborative spirit of our community, the 2017 Habitat Cabarrus CommUNITY Build will be an opportunity to unify the community around the cause of decent, affordable housing. The focus of this project is to engage first responders, firefighters, police officers, EMS healthcare professionals and public officials to build alongside volunteers.

During the build, public servants will be teamed up with community volunteers. This concept allows individuals who may not otherwise cross paths to come together and use teamwork to help build the foundation for a family in our community.

We dedicated Odessa's house on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. Her niece decorated the whole place for her and brought food. At the dedication, Habitat Cabarrus board members Jim Monroe and Dianne Snyder presented Odessa with a bible and keys to her new home.

As a homeowner partner, Odessa has invested over 250 sweat equity hours on her and other Habitat homes and will now assume a 0% mortgage for her home!

Recently the Habitat Cabarrus ReStore had an early morning visit from some bright, young Cannon School students. Eager to make a difference, the students volunteered to help build four 8-ft wooden picnic tables to be sold at the ReStore. Under the watchful eyes and direction of ReStore staff members, the students learned how to correctly measure, use tools, and ultimately, create tables that will stand the test of time.

NOTE: The ReStore is building 3 more picnic tables this month. Get yours by Memorial Day! Email Dale Irvin at the ReStore and reserve one before they are gone! Tables are $149 and need to be prepaid to reserve.
