April Recap

This season, Inlet has been blessed with multiple educational residencies all over Ohio. Three of those residencies are new to us and we're thrilled to continue the connections for many years to come.

CINCINNATI
April 4-29, Inlet's Joshua Brown has been the Artist-in-Residency in Cincinnati at the  Kennedy Heights Arts Center, funded by the  Ohio Arts Council. During the residency, Joshua collaborated with a wide range of participants engaging in movement, building new relationships, and emphasizing new appreciation and understanding of modern dance. Josh is exposing the dance making process to the community he is serving. One of the primary goals of Kennedy Heights Arts Center is to help build confidence in the participants, and to encourage their expression through dance and movement. Dance can be a means to developing self discipline, teamwork, body awareness, physical fitness and self confidence. The residency will conclude after a culminating performance where Inlet's Dominic Moore-Dunson will join Joshua Brown, performing alongside the students of the residency.

NEWTON D. BAKER SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
Throughout April & May Inlet has started a new residency program at the  Newton D. Baker School of Arts in the Kamm's Corner community. This residency includes in-school programming that addresses students in Kindergarten all the way through 8th grade. Each class learns from Inlet's Michelle Sipes and Katie McGaha during their hour long connection. Curriculum exposes the children to their body as an instrument of expression, how to properly warm the body up, moving as an ensemble, problem solving skills, and more. In addition to the in-school program, Inlet's Elizabeth Pollert and Emily Stonecipher are conducting an after-school program to students Grades 4 through 8. The after school program students will perform alongside children from other Inlet programs at  Cleveland Public Theatre in Inlet Dance Theatre's DanceWorks' 17 Educational Matinee on Saturday, May 20.

Inlet is thrilled to be a part of the residency this year. Inlet was originally connected to Principal Wendy Rose-Geiling through  The Music Settlement , as she was looking for more residency partners to bring in music and dance to the schools. Then, after this residency is done in May, we have plans to meet with Principal Geiling to evaluate the residency, and makes plans for the following school year.  Next year, Inlet hopes to teach 1 full day per week (9:00am--3:40pm), plus an after-school program (3:40pm--5:30pm), throughout the entire school year.

JUDSON MANOR/UNIVERSITY CIRCLE
For the months of  March, April & May , Inlet is interviewing, holding discussion, and developing ideas and material from and with the residents at Judson Manor Retirement Community in Cleveland. The  Ohio Arts Council  granted Inlet Dance Theatre a  Creative Aging Ohio Initiative project grant.  This initiative allows Inlet to involve Judson residents in the dance making process; Judson residents are collaborating with Inlet to create a new work, "Building CLE", that will premiere at  Cleveland Public Theatre's DanceWorks '17   May 18-20 . T he Creative Aging Ohio initiative  creates and expands programs that engage older adults in the visual arts, dance, music, writing, and theatre. The initiative's goal is to help older adults-many of whom may live with degenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia, or suffer from isolation and loneliness-age more healthfully and renew their purpose and talents through the arts.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
In addition to all of these new residencies, Inlet began the second session of the  Early Learning Initiative program offered by  The Music Settlement. This session is being held at the  BOP STOP in Ohio City. In all, Inlet will perform 40 connections with early childhood centers throughout NE Ohio. These connections include a sneak peak performance of Inlet's commissioned work "What Do You Do With An Idea?" (a New York Times bestseller, written by Kobi Yamada) that will premiere at Playhouse Square in the 2017-2018 season. Then, the Pre-K students participate in various improvisational exercises that teach expression, creativity, while developing gross motor skills, and more!  These offerings have proven to sow seeds of a life-long interest in music, movement, and creative self-expression in thousands of children.

TEST FLIGHT
Inlet is excited to support and co-sponsor Company Member & Rehearsal Coordinator Dominic Moore-Dunson's  The "Black Card" Project that he is creating in collaboration with Company Member Kevin Parker. This show, centers on the life of the young character, Artie Alvin Beaty III (played by the 2 male performers), and examines the African-American ideal of the "Black Card."  Seen through a single school day, the main character soon discovers where "blackness" comes from and how to attain it.

The showing of the first 40 minutes of this new work premiered  April 20-22 as part of  CPT's Test Flight Series.  The goal of Test Flight is to support new work by local, national, and international artists. In this series, CPT provides: 1) The James Levin Theatre 2) Basic production staff, stage management, box office support 3) Marketing and advertising support. The artists provide the rest! The writers, directors, actors and designers selected for Test Flight dedicate themselves to creating new and original work, or stretching their artistic powers by working in new disciplines.

Station Hope celebrates hope and addresses many of the most important issues of our time through powerful theatre, spoken word, dance, music and multimedia performances inspired by contemporary issues of freedom and justice. Audiences are invited to explore the historic buildings and surrounding grounds while visual art installations, choir performances and other interactive activities set the atmosphere around the church. DANCE WORKS
Inlet will once again be performing as part of  Cleveland Public Theatre's DanceWorks '17 . This concert themed,  SPRINGING FORTH WITH NEW LIFE features 3 premieres and, for the first time, presents a company member's choreography. The concert's theme metaphorically  represents Inlet  welcoming the season of new life and renaissance of our beloved CLE. Inlet Dance Theatre, now in its 16th season, is experiencing a parallel trajectory. Inlet's recent rapid growth is providing us with challenging and exciting opportunities to live out our mission of using dance to further people in communities beyond our own.

We are privileged to be able to reflect on and explore current social contexts and injustices through our art. This year's concert features three new works and presents a work of one of our company members, all of which tackle distinctive and diverse subject matter. The DanceWorks' 17 premier es include a collaboration with the residents of the Judson Manor retirement community, created with support from Ohio Art Council's Creative Aging Ohio program. Other new works include a duet focusing on the need for mentoring relationships in our society and a group work looking at the ancient cultural practice of wearing sackcloth and ashes.  Also, as a first for the company, this concert will include an autobiographical quartet piece choreographed by one the company members, Dominic Moore-Dunson, Even There, You Lead Me.

Each year, Cleveland Public Theatre welcomes Northeast Ohio's most adventurous contemporary dance companies to the Gordon Square Theatre stage for five weeks of single and double bill performances. This year, each performance will take place in t he newly-renovated James Levin Theatre, a fully ADA-accessible featuring a newly-installed patron elevator and the addition of gender-neutral, wheelchair-accessible restrooms.
