Rorie Johnston I know this next bit of knowledge will age me, but I use to sell Yellow Page advertising. This was back in the day when all forms of advertising were static, with no customer interaction, unless the phone rang or the customer walked into the store. And, the only age consideration was that the older you get, the harder it is to read typeface in red.

Not so today. If you do not have a multifaceted marketing approach, then you could essentially be missing an entire market. Here are a few tips to consider as we look at the 3rd  challenge, The  Importance of Speed & Adaptation, from Weblink International.

It is not that young professionals are impatient. Growing up with Google, Netflix and other on-demand services, the younger generations are simply accustomed to instant access to  information. From Facebook and Google ads to Amazon and retailer recommendations, they are surrounded by, and expect, content that is customized for them.

The challenges
  • Instant gratification is the rule. Young professionals expect creative content on demand. If you are providing products and services, or hosting events for Millennials, the difficulty is delivering your wares on their terms.
  • Customization rules. Knowing your audience is key to any marketing strategy, but Millennials, more so than any other previous generation, weed out information that is not relevant to them. If your message is not relevant, they are less apt to listen.
Engagement strategy
  • Use multiple mediums. Create your message in a variety of formats so that it will be easily found on demand. The subject of a webinar can be translated into a blog, Facebook, or LinkedIn post. If you are holding an event for younger professionals, be sure to market it widely online. In addition to email, send out invitations on Facebook and other social networks.
  • Embed the seed. Millennials love interesting videos. To boost attendance for future events, record key moments from your events to create teaser videos that you post to your website and other social media accounts.
  • Demonstrate relevance. Customize your videos, emails and social media posts with images of young professionals using technology and participating in peer interactions and group activities.
One of our local business owners is prohibited from having a Facebook page as the franchise does not allow an online presence personalized to each location. I understand protecting the integrity of the franchise, but is it at the cost of business growth? It is difficult to measure, but after reading this week's tips, I suspect that they are.

Sincerely,

Rorie Johnston

Plans for a  Courtyard by Marriott hotel on a piece of city-owned land in downtown  Escondido were killed this week when the City Council decided in closed session to end negotiations with developer Craig Clark.
"It just doesn't fit in with our vision for the area," said City Councilman John Masson, who has been championing a long-term plan for building a new library in an expanded Grape Day Park, which is adjacent to the proposed hotel site.

Amid a shifting landscape of growing consumer choices and increasingly exacting emissions regulations, state utilities and regulators have pressed ahead with a variety of initiatives designed to prevent energy shortages, consumer rebellions or a perfect storm of the two. Part of the challenge to the status quo has been posed by so-called community choice aggregations, or CCAs - local power agencies that more municipalities have embraced or considered switching to, away from legacy power utility companies.

Palomar Health CEO Robert Hemker, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed, and Palomar Health Board of Directors Treasurer Jerry Kaufman broke ground April 12 on a three story, 75,000 square foot outpatient center that continues Palomar Health's commitment to provide high-quality health care to North County residents.  The Palomar Health Outpatient Center - Escondido will be home to the only radiation oncology center in North County (currently operating at the downtown Escondido hospital).
