NEW CANADIAN CENSUS DATA FOCUSING ON SENIORS

On May 3, Statistics Canada released more data from the 2016 census which highlight very interesting information about seniors in Canada.

Growth in the number of seniors
The increase in the proportion of seniors from 2011 to 2016 was the largest observed in 70 years. The number of people 65 years of age and older increased by 20%. By comparison, Canada's overall population grew by 5% from 2011 to 2016.

The number of people aged 85 and older grew by 19.4% from 2011 to 2016, nearly four times the rate for the overall Canadian population. In 2016, there were 770,780 people aged 85 and older living in Canada, representing 2.2% of the Canadian population overall and about 13% of the population aged 65 and older. Read more in A portrait of the population aged 85 and older in 2016 in Canada.

Those over 100 years of age were the fastest-growing cohort from 2011 to 2016 at 41.3%.

More seniors than children living in Canada
2016 marked the first time that there were more seniors (5.9 million or 16.9% of the Canadian population) than children 14 years of age and younger (5.8 million or 16.6%).

However, the Prairie provinces were the only jurisdiction where there were more children 14 years of age and younger than seniors 65 years of age and older.

Future projections
Today, life expectancy is over 82 years, and 9 in 10 people can expect to reach 65 years of age. By 2031, close to one in four Canadians (23%) could be 65 years of age or older, while the proportion of children 14 years of age and younger could remain similar to the 2016 level (16%). The share of people aged 15 to 64 will likely continue to decrease.

An increasingly female population
Given that women have a longer life expectancy than men, the aging of the Canadian population is also changing the distribution by sex. Among people 65 years of age and older, the number of women exceeded the number of men by more than 20% and there were two women for every man in the 85-and-older population. This infographic summarizes the key trends related to the age and sex structure of the Canadian population.

Proportion of seniors in municipalities
Edmonton and Calgary have the smallest proportion of people 65 years and older compared to other Census Metropolitan Areas in Canada (Edmonton 12.3% and Calgary 11%).
