NGSS Standards Pages
The SDCOE Science team created shared documents with all the state science standards. You can access them at SDCOE NGSS Resource Center webpage under the NGSS Standards tab. You can view, download, or share these documents as needed.

NGSS Parent Guides
Achieve recently released a suite of NGSS Parent Guides to illustrate how the standards are a powerful foundation to help students build a cohesive understanding of science over time. These new materials were developed and designed based on feedback from parents and educators in NGSS-adopted states and districts, and are now available for grades K-2 , grades 3-5 , grades 6-8 , and grades 9-12 .

California Science Framework
The pre-publication of the state Science Framework is now available online. This curriculum framework was adopted by the state Board of Education on Nov. 3. A professionally edited and formatted version of the framework will be available at a later time. The chapters and appendixes have been reorganized as of February 2017.

NGSS Lesson Screener
The  NGSS Lesson Screener quickly reviews a lesson to see if it is being developed on the right track or warrants further review, and to what extent a group of reviewers have a common understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This tool was developed by Achieve and focuses on NGSS instructional shifts and the features of quality lesson design.

SDCOE Science Professional Learning Catalog Now Available
The 2017-18 SDCOE Science Professional Learning catalog includes a listing of available learning events throughout the year to help educators plan their schedule. Educators can learn about and deepen their understanding of the NGSS, plan science instruction, develop assessments, and evaluate materials for alignment to the new standards with these offerings. The learning opportunities are designed to support and build the capacity of districts and schools that are implementing the NGSS. Any updated information will be posted on the professional learning page at www.sdcoe.net/science.

Elementary Science Academy Cohort 4
Join other elementary school teachers in an intensive nine-day professional learning experience. The Elementary Science Academy consists of a four-day summer institute and five follow-up days throughout the school year. The cohorts begin July 10 to 13 or July 24 to 27 with follow-up dates through April. Learn more and download the flier  here.
The Scripps Institute of Oceanography is offering professional development related to the NGSS High School Chemistry in Earth Systems, instructional segment two This is a great opportunity to see real geochemistry in action and get ideas about how to embed plate tectonics into chemistry.
When: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3
Location: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego
Agenda:
  • Learn about content connections to the NGSS in earth and space science, relating to plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanos, and chemical processes in the Earth's mantle.
  • Develop tools for creating instructional segments that support your students' learning of earth and space science integrated with chemistry.
  • Tour a Scripps Institution of Oceanography research laboratory that is actively investigating geochemistry.
Space is limited to 25 teachers. Click here to register.

The Sally Ride Science Junior Academy offers science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) workshops for girls entering grades 6 through 12 in 2017-18. During these workshops, students assume the roles of space explorer, ocean engineer, computer scientist, and more as they immerse themselves in hands-on projects. See the  Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego website for more information.

2017 Distinguished Lecturers Series
Guest lecturer Dr. Philip Bell, visiting San Diego State University from the University of Washington, will speak on promoting equity in systems of science education through research-practice-community partnerships on from 4 to 6 p.m. May 25. The free forum is available through SDSU's Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education and the STEM Education Economics and Equity Seminar Series. It will be held in in Room AL101 in the  Arts and Letters Building. Free parking is available in Parking Structure PS12, levels 1 to 3. Click here to learn more and register.

SDSU's Distinguished Lecturers Series gives leading educators and researchers a forum to discuss key issues and emerging strategies in mathematics and science education. The series is designed to bring the science, education, and business communities together to encourage conversations about the future of science and math education.
