Staff Appreciation Week is May 15-19
Help us show our appreciation!
|
Let's show our passionate, hard working LW staff how much we appreciate them! During Staff Appreciation Week May 15-19, the PTSA and Leadership students are planning a week full of tasty treats. We have 160 staff members to appreciate, so we need lots of parents to pitch in to make this week special. Check out the
list of helpful food donations. Thanks, all!

How to be Academically Successful in College
|
Heads up, senior parents! Please make a note of our May 17 presentation:
Is your student curious/anxious about what happens once they get to college? Encourage them to come find out!
Dr. Craig Lewis, a former faculty member, academic dean, dean of students affairs and program director with over 30 years experience will share keys to ensure success at college Wednesday at 12:40, May 17 in the College and Career Center. As always, we have free pizza and snacks!
All talks start right on time and last about half an hour. Students are free to leave whenever they need -- we know how busy they are.
Wednesday May 3 and 10: No presentations. Good luck with AP testing!

Many thanks for many people!

May is a month for appreciation. Soon we will celebrate Staff Appreciation Week at LWHS (May 15-19) -- a great time to send a note of thanks to the teacher or staff member who played a special role in your student's experience! The PTSA represents all parents as we serve and give to enhance the educational community at LWHS, and we want to take this time and space to say "thank you" to some people who have given in great ways this year!
Thank you to Jody Lallas and the whole Staff Appreciation team; to Janice Vache for editing the Kang Crier, and to Laura Freeman and Karen Peters for sending Kang Postcards; to Amanda Maggiora for managing our PTSA website; to HaeSue Park for coordinating our volunteer opportunities; to Erika Somm for recruiting excellent Parent Education speakers; to Judy Shedd, Debbie Cossey and the College Application Workshop team for their weekly commitment; to Susanne Park and Brenda Baker for the warm and tasty hospitality at our PTSA meetings; to Pam Hay for chairing the Reflections program; to Martha Rames for coordinating the Fear-Free SAT/ACT tests; to Tere Kaulfus and the School Beautification team and volunteers; to Helen Meyers for coordinating our Emergency Prep efforts; to Debbie Bensussen, Leisa Sanders and Kristen Becker-Brown for planning the Senior Party, and to Debbie Ohman and the Senior Salute team; to Kathy Royal for leading our Grants committee; and to Lori Chisholm and the rest of the team administrating the Sheeley Scholarships.
More thanks to come in the next issue of the Kang Crier! Please share your appreciation with those who make our LWHS community a great place to learn!

Upcoming senior activities
Mark your calendars
|
The end of the year is fast approaching and June is especially busy for seniors. Here are some important dates for your calendar. For more events and details, see the online Senior Events Calendar.
Movie Night: Stay tuned.
Prom: We hope your seniors will join us on June 3 from 8 - 11 pm at the Fremont Foundry for this year's prom, "City of Stars." Ticket sales start the week of May 22 and cost $50 with an ASB card and $55 without an ASB card. The following week, May 3- June 2, tickets will cost $60 with an ASB card and $65 without an ASB card. ALL student fines must be paid before tickets can be purchased. If you're buying for your date, make sure to have them pay off their fines! If you want to bring a date from another school, make sure to have them complete the
Dance Guest Pass
form and have it with you to purchase the tickets. This form can also be found on PowerSchool.
Senior Salute: This celebration includes student performances, refreshments and plenty of photo ops featuring graduating seniors in cap-and-gown splendor. Since graduation is at Key Arena, Senior Salute is the time to lock in memories of your senior and their friends taking leave of LWHS. Senior Salute
is the evening of Tuesday, June 13 from 7-9 pm in the gym and Commons.
Look for more information in upcoming issues of the Kang Crier.
Senior Sunset: Stay tuned.
Senior Breakfast: The morning of graduation, June 15, Senior Breakfast will be held in the Commons at 8 am for all seniors that wish to attend. Directly after this, students are REQUIRED to participate in a graduation rehearsal at 9 am. If not present at the rehearsal, they will NOT be allowed to walk at graduation! All parents who wish to volunteer to serve food at Senior Breakfast may
sign up online.
Graduation Rehearsal: Join fellow seniors June 15, directly following Senior Breakfast, from 9-11 am in the gym. This rehearsal is mandatory for all seniors walking in graduation.
Graduation: Thursday, June 15 at 8 pm at Key Arena in Seattle. Congratulations, Kangs!
Senior Party: Join the big event on Thursday, June 15 after graduation -- students will leave LWHS on buses that night and return Friday, June 16 at 6 am. The Senior Party is a safe and fun-filled all-night party -- and an LWHS tradition!

Senior Party just 6 weeks away!
Ticket sales and bus sign ups May 15 and 19
|
Senior Party is an LWHS tradition, and it's a once-in-a-lifetime evening where graduates celebrate with their classmates in a fun, safe way: alcohol- and drug-free, and well-chaperoned. For more information, check out the LWHS PTSA website.
Ticket sales: Tickets are on sale during lunch May 15 and 19; cash and checks made payable to LWHS PTSA are accepted. Tickets can also be purchased anytime online.
The online registration form has more information about scholarship assistance. Tickets are currently $200. June 9 is the last day to purchase tickets.
Bus signups: Seniors who have already paid for their Senior Party ticket must turn in the
release form to sign up for the bus. Per the venue requirements, a parent or guardian and the student must sign the release form regardless of whether the senior is 18 or under, now or at the time of graduation. This is also the time to turn in the
food allergy form, if applicable.
Bus signups are happening May 15 and 19 during lunch, next and last opportunity will be June 8 and 9.

AP exams
|
All students taking AP Exams should have picked up their AP Packets on April 24. The packet includes their bar-coded number labels (which they will need for their exams) and a letter that lists all their exams and their assigned testing locations. AP Exams run from May 1-12. In the Bulletin for Students and Parents (part of their registration packet), there is a list of "What to Bring" and "What Not to Bring" to the exams. Students should read this carefully. And, please remind your student to leave the cell phone and backpack in the car. Good luck to each of these ambitious students!

By now, students and parents have received third quarter report cards. Finals will be here before students know it. If students are not doing well, they need to meet with their teacher to see how they can improve. They should take advantage of ROO Time/Tutorial (every Monday and Thursday) and/or plan to meet with their teacher before or after school. We also offer Wednesday Workshop after early release Wednesdays; tutors in a variety of subjects are available to help students. Students can also form informal study groups to review lecture notes or prepare for tests. Counselors have a list of tutors if students are really behind or confused. For freshmen, sophomores and juniors, this may be a good opportunity to assess progress and perhaps take a summer school course to make up deficiencies; we have summer school booklets in the Counseling Center and information is also available online. Seniors need to make one solid push to the end; if required classes are not passed, seniors will not be allowed to participate in the walk-through graduation ceremony.
