Are You Ready for Mental Health Month?

During May, NAMI and the rest of the country will raise awareness of mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care.
In 2017, NAMI will promote the theme " Into Mental Health: Inspired, Informed, Involved" throughout all awareness events, including Mental Health Month. The campaign will focus on the power of starting inspiring conversations, getting informed to know the right thing to say and becoming involved with NAMI activities. W e're asking everyone to join with us to say, "I'm in to mental health!"

As a NAMI leader, you play a significant role in growing the movement. NAMI has created resources you may use to make Mental Health Month as successful as possible:
  • Message guide and style sheet
  • Social media toolkit
  • Sample press release
  • Customizable flyer in Microsoft Word
  • Graphics to download, print or share on social media

NAMI California Program News
Peer-to-Peer Mentor Training Held in Sacramento

NAMI California hosted a Peer-to-Peer Mentor Training on April 28th - 30th in Sacramento, CA. There were 15 graduates that represented 10 affiliates from Amador County, El Dorado County, Los Angeles County, Sacramento County, San Francisco County, Santa Cruz County, Shasta County, Solano County, and Tehema County. NAMI California was very excited to be able to include the various counties throughout California and to have such a successful training.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a free, 10 session class to help adults living with mental health challenges achieve and maintain wellness. Participants leave NAMI Peer-to-Peer with a customized relapse prevention plan and a form they can use to create their own Advance Directive for Mental Healthcare Decision Making. Discussion and interactive exercises focus on mindfulness and meditation, relapse prevention, and healthy coping skills to help cope with life's challenges. Classes are free and confidential, are open to any adult living with a mental illness, and are taught by trained Peer Mentors living in recovery themselves.

For more information regarding the Peer-to-Peer program, please contact Erik Villalobos, Education Coordinator, by email at [email protected] .
Parents & Teachers As Allies TA Call Postponed

Please note that the Parents & Teachers as Allies TA call scheduled for this Thursday, May 11th will be postponed until NAMI has more detailed updates on the transition of PTA to Ending the Silence (ETS). NAMI anticipates there being a call in June, prior to Convention. NAMI will give at least 1 week notice.

In the meantime, please send NAMI any and all feedback that you have received from school staff or parents around the PTA presentation as well as your personal feedback as a trainer, teacher or presenter.  Thank you for all of your work around Parents & Teachers as Allies!
NAMI National Education Hall of Fame 2017

Across the United States and Mexico, Canada and Italy, thousands of program leaders volunteer their time and energy to help others lead better lives. Each year, NAMI honors program leaders who have dedicated themselves to bringing insight and hope to their communities by including them in NAMI's National Education Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame recognizes people who have led a large number of classes, presentations, support groups or trainings. With your help, NAMI will send your volunteers a certificate to recognize their achievement.

This honor is an opportunity for you to acknowledge your volunteers' hard work and persistence. NAMI California encourages you to receive the certificates at your NAMI Affiliate location and add your own personal touch to your honoree's Hall of Fame inclusion.

Please use this Excel document to tell NAMI who in your state has qualified this year. Deadline for submissions to NAMI California is 5pm PT on June 5th, 2017. Details on who qualifies for what and how to submit this information are below.

Who qualifies for Hall of Fame
Program leaders can be awarded for either Silver Level achievement or Gold Level achievement in each program. They must meet the requirements within a single program -- programs cannot be combined. For example, someone who led 30 NAMI Ending the Silence presentations would qualify for a Silver Level honor. Someone who led 15 NAMI Ending the Silence presentations as well as 15 NAMI In Our Own Voice presentations would not. However, if they meet the requirements within each program, people may qualify for multiple Hall of Fame honors.

If a person has already received a Hall of Fame honor at a specific level, please do not nominate them again for the same level. Here you can review past Hall of Fame honorees . The username/password to access this page is the same as accessing the data site. (username: [email protected] ; password: nami)

How to use the spreadsheet
  • Enter information exactly as you want it written. The information you enter on this spreadsheet is exactly how your honorees' name will appear on their certificate and how NAMI will address the certificate to them. NAMI uses exactly what you enter, so please double-check spelling and addresses before submitting the spreadsheet to NAMI California to submit to NAMI National.
  • Select from the drop-down options. The below columns will not let you type information in. Instead, you must choose one of the options from the drop-down box that appears when you click on the box, then click on the arrow that appears.
    • Location type - pre selected to NAMI Affiliate Location
    • Program
    • Role
    • Level
    • Title
  • Consider acknowledging your honorees in person. NAMI California recommends that you acknowledge your honorees' achievements in person by choosing to give out certificates at a local event. NAMI California encourages you to enter a NAMI Affiliate location where the certificates will be sent, rather than individuals' homes or to the State Office.
NAMI's national education programs could not happen without NAMI volunteers' hard work and passion, or without your support and dedication. NAMI thanks you for helping NAMI honor what makes NAMI part of a life-changing movement.
