What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis is a service club whose mission is to serve the children in the community by sponsoring AKTION Club (community service for young adults with special needs), Key Club (service leadership organization for teens that teaches leadership through service to others), scholarships ($50,000 awarded in 2016), Science Fairs and other Science and Engineering related education activities and Terrific Kids & BUG programs.  They are able to sponsor these activities through fundraising at their Bi-Annual Pancake Breakfast, sales through the Marketplace re-sale store and through generous donations from community and club members.

What's in it for you to become a member of Kiwanis?
Fellowship and fun: Kiwanis members don't just do service-they have fun. Members make new friends by being part of the club where they attend meetings and participate in social events. Our local Kiwanis club also provides excellent networking opportunities for professionals. Members meet new people from all over their community through service projects, fundraising and by attending the weekly meeting.

The Kiwanis Marketplace is located just across the street from Dairy Queen at:

The western cowboy is an icon of the old west, especially when we think of the many important Cave Creek cattle ranching families like the Cartwrights. Many are aware cattle were introduced to the New World by the Spanish during Christopher Columbus’ second voyage in 1493. Cattle were introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain/Portugal) by the invading Moors starting in AD 711.  But, what about the history of cattle? Today scientists are divided whether cattle developed in eastern Europe/western Asia or on the Indian subcontinent, or both. Scientists do agree the domestication of a large wild bovine, the auroch, became modern cattle; the process of domestication started about 10,000 to 11,000 years ago. The auroch was fierce and about twice the size of cattle today. Late Paleolithic people started selecting the smallest and most docile aurochs for breeding; manageable size and docility resulted. In 1627, the last auroch became extinct in Poland.

Keeping the Carefree Christmas Festival Celebration Fresh and Exciting!
It is important to keep popular activities like the Carefree Christmas Festival fresh and innovative so that participants – be they spectators, volunteers, participants in the Parade, or donors and sponsors –are excited to return and participate year after year. This is the Town of Carefree’s objective with the annual Christmas Festival.  Without innovation, excitement dwindles and participation erodes.
After nine successful years, Carefree is looking to expand the traditions and involvement of the entire Foothills Community throughout the Christmas Season in what we have themed the “Christmas in Carefree, A Season of Traditions” celebration, as well as further improve community and business involvement.
Similar to any successful business, Carefree has been evaluating ways to add new excitement while keeping the long term traditions in the annual Christmas celebration, as well as gain additional efficiencies and improve the safety of the participants. Our desire is to expand the Christmas celebration throughout the season to include weekdays and multiple weekends before Christmas, preserving the traditional second weekend of December (that has always been slated for the past festival) for heightened activity which will include a Snow village, a “themed” holiday market and a daytime parade.
In addition, we will be increasing daytime activities to complement typical business hours and even provide for expanded evening offerings such as a Christmas tree lighting ceremony under the Sundial, holiday concerts and expanded garden lighting.   And, while the electrical parade has been a signature event of the season, in recent years there has been a significant decline in the number of lighted floats due to resources and concerns over public safety. Therefore, logically, the Town is working with the Chamber of Commerce to better position the parade as a daytime tradition, to allow for more community involvement, reduce safety risks and ensure enhanced exposure of the Town’s wonderful business district.
We also emphasize and welcome community organizations and non-profits to contact us about their potential participation, and how this new expanded platform can help showcase their cause. The expanded footprint allows for more entertainment and family activities in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion offered by community groups from all over the desert foothills area.
Collectively, the new “Christmas in Carefree” theme will build upon and refresh the traditions of the past festivals, and ensure a safe, fun, indelible experience for all generations, while showcasing the beauty of Carefree and all it has to offer.
