Lake Wabukayne Park Stewardship Day
The Friends of Lake Wabukayne are hosting this event on Saturday June 3, 2017 from 11 am - 1 pm.

Mural Painting at Union Park

We will be painting murals on the huts and skateboard.

From May 1 to 7 the City of Mississauga is hosting Rebel17. This annual campaign empowers youth ages 13 to 30 to make a difference within their community through music, film, the arts, culture and sport. Rebel17 features free drop-ins, workshops, events and activities created by youth for youth. Events taking place at Meadowvale Community Centre & Library include: Movie Night on Tues. May 2 (4 - 6 pm), Table tennis Tournament on Wed. May 3 (3 - 5 pm), 3 point shooting contest on Thurs May 4 (3 - 5 pm) and Basketball tournament on Friday May 5 (3 - 5 pm). Pet Valu Walk for Dogs has been a vital national fundraiser in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. Taking place in more than 240 communities across Canada, the Walk raises funds to provide life-changing Dog Guides to Canadians with physical and medical disabilities at no cost to them. April was a very busy month so my newsletter is a little late.
As city crews get ready for summer in our parks I want to remind you of two important issues we face on our trails.
Over the winter, Parks remove many of the garbage bins from the parks. This is both a cost saving measure as well as for protection of the grass along the trails that gets damaged by heavy trucks that collect the waste. Sadly, some dog owners felt it was acceptable to litter our neighbourhood parks and leave their pet waste on the edge of the trail. I had many complaints from the neighbours about this and it was very upsetting to hear that residents thought so little of their community that they felt it was okay to leave their pet's waste lying on the ground.
Regardless of whether there is a waste bin or not, we are all responsible for our animals and I appeal to everyone to please take your waste home if you are not near a waste bin. The removal of the bins is not an excuse for irresponsible behaviour. Lets show our children a good example.
Our park trails are getting busy again and I want to remind all cyclists that by law you must have a bell or horn on all bikes. Please RING YOUR BELL when approaching pedestrians along the trails and pass on the left. We all have to share the trail so let's keep everyone safe.
Spring also brings construction. See below for information on major road works such as Britannia between Winston Churchill and Erin Mills Parkway and be patient during working hours.
I am hoping the weather will be good for our mural painting day at Union Park on May 13. Please come out and help us beautify our new park.

Development Update: 6719 Glen Erin Drive
I have been asked about the status of the development at 6719 Glen Erin Drive.
City Council approved the development of 83 condominium townhouses and stacked townhouse in addition to the existing 13-storey rental apartment building on September 8, 2015. Planning staff are in the process of finalizing development and Section 37 (Community Benefit) agreements with the applicant. Once the agreements are finalized, a Zoning By-law to enact Council's approval in principle will be sent to Council for adoption. Following adoption of the implementing By-law there is an appeal period that must lapse before the by-law takes effect.
The applicant will need to submit a site plan application in accordance with the approved concept plans. On complicated projects, the site plan approval process may take upwards of 9 months to complete but the length of time is largely dependent upon the applicant and their desire to proceed. The applicant will also need to apply for and receive building permits which may also take a significant amount of time but the permit process can run concurrently with the site plan application.
The applicant has not shared their anticipated timing to submit the required application and permits nor their anticipated time frame to begin construction with city staff.

Protect Against Lyme Disease
It is important that everyone know how to protect your pets and family against Lyme disease which is spread by deer ticks.
Please remember to be cautious in wooded and grassy areas and check yourselves and your pets for ticks which are a concern this year and can cause Lyme Disease. Vets in Mississauga report increased numbers of ticks on pets this spring.

Erin Centre Blvd Closed in May
Erin Centre Blvd. between Winston Churchill and Coldspring Way is closed for a 4 week period starting May 1, 2017.
Work will be ongoing to install water and sewer pipes to serve the new seniors' buildings at the Village of Erin Meadows. Detour signs have been posted. For detailed information, maps and MiWay service detours, click here.

MiWay Riders to Have More  Frequent Weekend Service
Starting on May 1, MiWay customers now have more frequent weekend service on some major routes. Ward 9 service increases include Route 109 Meadowvale Express, now servicing two new Mississauga Transitway stations in the Airport Corporate Centre. For information click here.

Watermain Replacement and Road Resurfacing of Britannia Rd West from Winston Churchill Boulevard to Erin Mills Parkway
 The Region of Peel is replacing watermains and resurfacing Britannia Road West from Winston Churchill Boulevard to Erin Mills Parkway. The work started at the end of March 2017 and is anticipated to be completed by November 2017.
This work will also include removing and replacing curbs, adding sidewalks and a multi-use trail, and installing a low impact development (environmentally friendly) storm sewer system. Click here for more information.

New Dock at Lake Aquitaine behind Meadowvale Community Centre
 I am pleased that work was completed on the new dock at Lake Aquitaine Park in time for summer.
This project was made possible through federal infrastructure funding which also included the new splash pad. There is now more seating so residents can sit and enjoy the lovely view of Lake Aquitaine.

Mississauga Firm - We Do Not Want a Larger Region Council
 On March 30 at Regional Council, Mississauga stood firm and voted down moving forward with a bylaw to expand the size of regional Council (and ultimately Mississauga Council).
We have been very clear that we do not need nor do we want to add more Councillors in the city and we also insist on at minimum 50% of the vote at Region. It is very unfair that Caledon gets 5 votes for 150,000 people, way over represented. We agree Brampton needs to have more representation but neither at a cost to our taxpayers nor at a loss of representation for Mississauga. We made the right decision but we are open to further discussion to see how we can improve Brampton's representation. The fairest way is, to reduce Caledon. City Wins Municipality of the Year Award
This award acknowledges the best in municipal leadership, festivals and event partnerships in Ontario. We promote all of our wonderful festivals as some of our biggest tourist draws and this award will go a long way towards attracting even more visitors to Mississauga.

Peel Police Launches Online Bicycle Registration
 Peel Regional Police send hundreds of recovered bicycles every year to auction when ownership cannot be determined. Citizens are encouraged to register their bicycles as chances of a lost or stolen bicycle being returned are greatly increased with use of this program.
Citizens who register their bicycles with Peel Police will have an option to receive a bicycle registration sticker decal. The sticker will serve to advertise the bicycle is registered with Police, and provide a visual theft deterrent. To register, click here.

Call for Cyclist Nominations
Do you know a keen cyclist who promotes cycling or active transportation in their local community or across our city? Mississauga's Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC) is calling out to our community to nominate cycling advocates for the Phil Green Recognition Award. The award is presented by the MCAC to a resident or group of residents who have promoted or furthered cycling or other forms of active transportation in the City of Mississauga in 2016.
Nomination deadline - Wednesday, May 31, 2017.
Nominations will be reviewed by the MCAC and the committee will select the winning candidate. The winner will receive the award at a City Council meeting. For more information on the Phil Green Recognition Award, visit the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee site.

New Self-Service Options Available on Pingstreet
Have you noticed a damaged curb or traffic sign needing repair? You can now report it using Pingstreet, a free mobile app. Mississauga has added seven new issues for residents to report on using their smartphone or tablet:
1. Faded or missing pavement markings
2. Traffic sign repair
3. Traffic signal light timing
4. Garbage or debris on roads
5. Objects encroaching on City property (roads, rivers or streams)
6. Curb damage
7. Dead or damaged sod
With the addition of these new issues, this brings the total number of services that can be requested on Pingstreet to 20. In just over one year, approximately 700 issues have been successfully reported and resolved on Pingstreet.

Freedom Pass for Students
 Are you 12 - 14 years old? Would you like to travel on MiWay for free this summer? How about free public swimming at both indoor and outdoor pools? Then you need a Freedom Pass! The Freedom Pass allows students to ride for free on MiWay within Mississauga and free participation in public swims at City operated pools from July 1 to August 31, 2016.
All you have to do is click here or go to any City of Mississauga community centre to complete an application form, then submit your completed form in person at your local community center (along with one piece of identification) and have your photo taken to create your personalized pass. Quantities are limited, so get yours starting May 1, 2016. For more information click here.

Meadowvale Four Rinks Renovation
Meadowvale Four Rinks is currently undergoing renovations. Work is expected to be completed by the end of August. The following work will take place:
- Replacement of various ice rink refrigeration components
- Replacement of the arena exhaust fans
- Installation of new automatic door openers at the four rinks
- LED lighting retrofit for all four (4) rinks.
These improvements are part of our lifecycle renewal program and will address accessibility issues and support energy management initiatives in the building.

Special Plantings Mark Canada 150
As part of Canada 150 celebrations, special plantings will take place in Ward 9.
Red and white annual plantings and existing planters are planned for end of May in the following Ward 9 locations:
- Meadowvale Community Centre
- Meadowvale Theatre
- Meadowvale Four Rinks
- Garry W. Morden Centre

SaugaBusks Hits Mississauga
Last year's Busker pilot was so successful we have made it permanent. Ward 9 launched the pilot at the Lake Wabukayne Day and the music was enjoyed by all who attended.
Registration is now open for Mississauga's popular busker program. This program will allow artists to animate city streets starting in May. Twenty-five buskers will be accepted to the program. The cost to register is $35 and those interested in participating must complete and submit a registration form available here.
Once approved, buskers must pick-up their photo ID from Customer Service at Mississauga Central Library, 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. Buskers may only perform at official 'Busk Stops' between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily. Buskers may perform for up to two hours at one stop per day. Busk Stop is available at Lake Aquitaine Park.

Eden Food for Change Hunger Awareness Breakfast
I was very proud to host the Eden Food for Change annual Hunger Awareness Breakfast on May 2nd at the Meadowvale Community Centre.
This annual breakfast event is a great way for local corporations and organizations to connect and work together to build a healthier Mississauga and learn about how to better support the growing number of people who are living with hunger in our neighbourhoods. Eden Food for Change is helping people access food for today as well as giving them the skills and tools so they can put healthy food on their own tables tomorrow.

Erin Mills Town Centre Unveils Canada 150 Artwork
I was pleased to join local artist Nargiza Usmanova and mall staff at Erin Mills Town Centre on May 1st at the unveiling of her artwork commemorating Canada 150.
These special works of art are in malls across Canada and visitors can enter a contest to win a trip anywhere in Canada.

905 Raptors Championship

I was pleased to join the celebration at city hall where fans got to see the trophy and meet members of the 905 Raptors.

Tree Planting Earth Days
On April 22 as part of the One Million Trees planting event, I joined the Credit Valley Conservation and city staff and residents at Castlegreen Meadows Park to plant 150 trees. Thank you to all who came out and participated.

On April 20, rain didn't stop Eden Food for Change from rolling out their new refrigerated truck.
Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Fyfe Foundation, the food bank was able to replace their old truck. We were joined by
Eric and Ryan Hyland from the Fyfe Foundation to do the unveiling.
We were also joined by members of the Meadowvale Islamic Centre who answered my call for support for the truck purchase and presented Eden Food For Change with a donation of $2,000 towards their new food truck.
