Spotlight on Sponsors - Historical Perspective

We could not do what we do without you!

Centre Ice and Howe Arena certainly have storied histories. When the privately owned Glacier Dome closed in 1982. I.C.E. (Involved Citizens Enterprises) formed and a year later the first "bubble rink" opened in Traverse City. Fueled by community demand for skating programs, Howe Arena opened in 1989. By 1995, all Howe Arena user groups exceeded member capacity. It had become clear that a second ice rink was needed and later that same year, 13 acres of land in East Bay Township was donated to I.C.E. by businessmen Craig Tester and Marty Lagina. Groundbreaking took place the following year and on April 7, 1997, Centre Ice welcomed its first skaters to David's Rink. West Rink opened in June of that same year and the Detroit Red Wings came north for their first training camp that September. For a complete history of I.C.E. Click Here.

It has taken much dedication and devotion by many individuals and the community as a whole to get us to where we are today, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Centre Ice, but what remains clear day in and day out is this: Centre Ice and Howe Arena would not be able to fulfill our mission of "providing accessible and affordable ice skating programs to the Grand Traverse region" without our sponsors and advertising partners!

Did you know that Centre Ice and Howe Arena offer the lowest cost of ice time of any non-subsidized ice rink in the State of Michigan? Our sponsors and advertising partners make this possible.

So, we'd like to thank our partners and we ask that you thank them too! All together now...THANK YOU!!! Please CLICK HERE for a complete list of I.C.E. sponsors  and support these fine businesses! Thank them personally when you stop by!

If your business would like to support your community ice rinks while also receiving excellent exposure value and brand awareness, contact Tricia Frey to receive a marketing packet. TC Curling Club:  Recap - Women's Team at Nationals;
Cherry Bombspiel

USA Curling Arena Nationals:  Four local women - Jillian Riecke, Cara Colburn, and Allison Rose of Traverse City, and Dustine Murphy of Interlochen - participated in the 2017 USA Curling Arena National Championships April 25-30 in South Bend, IN, representing the TC Curling Club and Great Lakes Curling Association as one of 15 women's teams from around the country.

Recap by Jillian Riecke

Our Arena Nationals team had a GREAT week in Notre Dame! We started 3-0 and lost a very close game to the other undefeated team in our pool at the end of round robin. We qualified for the quarterfinals and lost to that same team (Pittsburgh) in an extra end. Considering my goal was to "not get obliterated" and maybe just win one game, we far exceeded my expectations. A wonderful week meeting some great people at a very well organized event. Kudos to the USCA! Hoping to qualify to go back to Salt Lake City in 2018!

Ready for Good Curling!

2017 Cherry Bombspiel: The annual bonspiel took place April 21-23 at Centre Ice Arena. Members of the championship team - Bret Jackson Rink - hailed from Detroit and Kalamazoo. Team members included: Bret Jackson, Stephanie Senneker, Mark Wojda and Graeme Robson.  Local participating teams were Curl & the Gang and Microline.
Congratulations Cherry Bombspiel Champions!

Taking Care of Shoulder Injuries

Your shoulders are the most mobile, least stable joints in your body - and consequently the most susceptible to injury. Almost everyone will experience some kind of shoulder issue in their lifetime. Shoulder injuries are frequently caused by activities that involve excessive, repetitive, overhead motion, such as swimming, tennis, pitching, and weightlifting. In athletes, shoulder problems can develop slowly through repetitive, intensive training routines.

Athletes often ignore the pain and "play through" a shoulder injury, which can aggravate the condition and cause more problems. People also may underestimate the extent of their injury because steady pain, weakness in the arm, or limited joint motion becomes almost second nature to them.

Common Sports Injuries
  • Dislocation - the shoulder joint is forced out of its normal position
  • Shoulder impingement - a pinching of shoulder muscles against the top part of the shoulder
  • Rotator cuff/ labrum tear - rotator cuff muscles provide stability and allow us to lift and reach our arm in different directions
  • Clavicle (collar bone) fracture - needs immediate medical care
  • Acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation - clavicle (collar bone) separates from the shoulder blade
Warning Signs of a Shoulder Injury
  • Is your shoulder stiff?
  • Can you rotate your shoulder in all the normal positions?
  • Does your shoulder feel like it could pop out or slide out of socket?
  • Do you lack shoulder strength to carry out activities?
  • Do you have intense pain?
Shoulder Injury First Aid

Following an injury to the shoulder, remember to protect, rest, ice, and compress.
  • Apply ice immediately after the injury for 48 hours; ice for 10 minutes, five times a day.
  • Seek medical help if your shoulder is very painful and unable to move.
Physical Therapy Can Help

An orthopedic specialist or physical therapist can evaluate your shoulder and determine the severity of your injury. Based on this information, a treatment plan will be developed to restore your function. Physical therapists work with injured tissue to restore range of motion, strength and reduce pain. Most athletes return to sports sooner after going through physical therapy.

"Physical therapy can help you restore normal range of motion, strength, and sports specific training while guiding you through the healing process. This will decrease your recovery time," said Cindy Diver, a physical therapist at Munson Community Health Center.
