Sermon Series
Kingdom Focus
Sunday, May 14, 2017:   Advancing the Kingdom
Passage: Matthew 13:1-58

The world knows Jesus primarily as an itinerant teacher who seemed to be poorly received. But the Gospel of Matthew rightly portrays him as a King who brings in his kingdom with a new ethic, values, goals and leadership. As we come to follow Jesus more and more as King, our lives are transformed in their entirety. Why we work, how we relate to others and culture, the way we use money and time, and the very goals of our lives are more and more brought into alignment with our King's Word.

From the Pastors' Bookshelf

Each quarter, one of the Pastors at Uptown Church will be recommending a book from his library for the congregation to read. These recommended books will be available to purchase or borrow from the church's Resource Center located on the 2nd floor.

This quarter's recommendation is from the library of  Rev. Dave Kulp.

Book:
Holding on to Hope: a pathway through suffering to the heart of God

by Nancy Guthrie

"
Years ago I had a number of Uptown Church members who were personally well acquainted with grief, loss and heartache preview a number of books that could be used to recommend to people who were in the midst of trials.  It was a goal to find one specific resource that could point people to Christ in the widely varied experiences people in our midst struggle with (death of a loved one, miscarriage, infertility, loneliness). The consensus of the readers was that Nancy Guthie's book Holding on to Hope was by far the best of all the resources we previewed, and since then it has been a great resource for our church.
Nancy Guthrie's writing is informed by personal knowledge of deep pain and loss as well as a clear biblical perspective.  Many have reported that the way she weaves the story of the book of Job and her own story together is comforting, challenging and helpful.
If you are personally struggling and could use a resource to help you hold onto Christ centered hope then I highly recommend this resource, and I just happen to have a number of copies on the bottom shelf of my resource bookshelf.  If you want me to set one aside for you just let me know.  Or, if you have a friend that is in the midst of struggle maybe this is a great resource you could purchase, write a note inside and pass on."

I pray that you, the people of Uptown Church would be those who make it clear that God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), Who weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15), and those that comfort others with the comfort of God. (2 Cor 1:3-4).
