Article2Commerce City Thanks Its Small Businesses for Their Vital Contributions

As part of National Small Business Week, City Council adopted a proclamation on May 1 to say "thank you" to all of the small businesses in Commerce City. Whiskey Barrel Coffee Co. founder, Tal Fishman, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the city's small businesses.

An estimated 80 percent of the city's more than 1,300 businesses have less than 20 employees. These small businesses make significant contributions to the city's economy. In fact, small businesses across the country create two-thirds of the nation's jobs. Every year, the U.S. Small Business Administration highlights the impacts of entrepreneurs and small owners through National Small Business Week. Find out more about National Small Business Week here.

Article5City Council Passes Proclamation Recognizing National Economic Development Week

National Economic Development Week is May 8-13. The purpose of this designated week is to increase awareness of economic development in communities across the country. Economic development, by definition, is a program, group of policies, or set of activities that positively influence economic change in a community by or through:
  • Wealth generation
  • Economic diversification
  • Job growth and preservation and/or
  • Building the local tax base
In Commerce City, we focus most of our economic development resources on job growth and new investment through primary employers, which are the companies that produce goods and services sold outside the local community, bringing new money into the economy. This is accomplished in part through the collaboration and support of a vast network of economic development partners. For Commerce City, these partners include:
  • Adams County Economic Development;
  • Metro Denver Economic Development Council;
  • The Economic Development Council of Colorado;
  • The State of Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade; and
  • The International Economic Development Council
A number of other organizations also work with the Economic Development Division to provide support services to Commerce City businesses. View a copy of the proclamation here.
