32 Students Graduate from the Eastern Shore Chamber's Student Training & Exploration Program
The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2017 Student Training and Exploration Program (STEP) graduates. Thirty-two students graduated from the program Monday, May 1 at Daphne United Methodist Church.
STEP is a four-year leadership and career pathway exploration initiative of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The Chamber works in conjunction with the Baldwin County Board of Education, local colleges, technical training facilities and local industries to bridge education with businesses on the Eastern Shore. "Our goal is for students to reach their highest potential for success," said program director Christina Hellmich.
Over the past four years, students explored high demand career opportunities in Southwest Alabama while connecting classroom knowledge with skills needed in the workplace. Students heard from local professionals about how they found their career path, participated in an soft skills workshop where they prepared for future interviews and explored career options at local businesses such as Segers Aero Corporation, Chris Myers Automotive, Daphne Utilities and the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort. Students also took advantage of a cash course to understand actual earning possibilities. They will finish out the program by creating a career plan and timeline based on their goals after high school graduation.
"I hope each of our students have become more self-aware, confident and determined," said Hellmich, "With these tools, we know these students will be well on their way to achieving success."
This program could not be possible without the dedication and talent of those who help facilitate rewarding days for these students. The STEP program is proud to have the support of the Chamber Board of Directors, especially the Chamber Foundation Chairman Steve Carey. Our local high schools and counselors also give a great deal of support to make this program possible.
The Chamber would also like to thank the program sponsor Daphne Utilities. Special thanks to the graduation sponsor Old Tyme Feed, sponsor Baldwin EMC and all the local companies who have given in-kind support throughout the year.
If your company would like to learn more about how you can become more involved with the Student Training and Exploration Program, email Christina Hellmich at

The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood are perfect for your next corporate retreat, strategic planning meeting, casual get-together or family vacation. Located in Loxley, the lodges provide a great place to gather to enjoy the luxury of simple, natural pleasures such as reading a good book on a quiet porch or
an early morning fishing trip on the misty lake.
The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood have all the amenities and facilities desired in two fully-furnished lodges with private guest rooms and baths, screened in porches, TVs, internet and several entertaining facilities all overlooking a 200-acre stocked, fresh-water lake, which is nestled in a 1500+ acre gated country club community. Connecting the two lodges, you will find a beautiful pool, cabana and entertainment space.
As a guest of the Stewart Lodges, you have access to otherwise exclusively private amenities such as a driving range, sporting clays, fishing, fitness center, tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course. In-house catering is available, as well as access to the magnificent country club facilities for dining and entertainment.
"The vision of The Stewart Lodges is simple: to create and deliver a private, exclusive, customized experience for our client, whether for a business meeting, a golf or fishing trip or a family gathering," said CEO/President Jennie Campbell.
Jennie Campbell has been CEO/President of the Stewart Lodges at Steelwood for 13 years. She strongly believes that that a critical factor in success is
having great mentors, learning from mistakes, having persistence and most importantly, having integrity.
"I believe very passionately about mentoring and giving back," she said, "I have and I still am the benefactor of a relationship with stronger business and spiritual mentors in both my business and personal life. It's my turn to give back and to give guidance to the next business person. I've been blessed in my career on multiple levels."
Campbell hopes to make an impact with her employees and customers each day.
"What I hope I have accomplished in my career and life is to be significant by making a difference in other peoples' lives by mentoring and sharing through my personal experiences and knowledge as my mentor has done for me," said Campbell.

Coastal Alabama Partnership Legislative Fly-in
|
Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce President Casey Williams was proud to represent the Eastern Shore along with about 40 other elected and business leaders from Mobile and Baldwin Counties in Washington D.C. for the Coastal Alabama Partnership (CAP) Legislative Fly-in.
The regional team traveled to the nation's capital to meet federal legislators and department members about issues concerning Coastal Alabama.
"Being part of the CAP delegation to Washington not only gave me insight into the issues impacting our area, but also showed me how important it is to work together as a region to better our communities," said Williams, "This trip also allowed me to connect with others who are passionate about Coastal Alabama and its quality of life."

Over the past several weeks I have had the honor and privilege to represent the Eastern Shore at events such as the Coastal Alabama Partnership (CAP) Legislative meetings in Montgomery, CAP Legislative Fly-in to Washington D.C. and a town hall meeting concerning re-establishing passenger rail service to our area.
I have learned a lot about a lot: Our port project, passenger rail service, fisheries management, Airbus, Austal, the I-10 Bridge, flood insurance, and infrastructure at the local and state level.
Your Chamber will do our best to keep our finger on the pulse of these and other projects that can and will affect our business community and quality of life. I encourage everyone to look up from your day to day activities to stay informed about what matters to you!
As always, it is my pleasure to serve you.

Sports & Fitness Facility Proposed for Daphne
Your Feedback is Needed
A new sports and fitness center named "Le Club" is being proposed in the City of Daphne. Developer Johannes Schild presented the project to the Chamber tourism committee April 25. The proposed facility would include a gym, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, competition lap pool, resort-style outdoor pool with splash pad, virtual golf, group fitness classes, spa, health food restaurant and child care.
Although several locations are being considered, Schild says they'd like to see it near Daphne High School on Highway 181.
Developers are currently conducting a feasibility survey to gauge the community's interest in such a health club. That's where they can use your help. Follow the link below to learn more about the proposed project and take the survey.
