The Siena Scribe

May 2, 2017

In this issue of the Scribe:
Dear Parents,

Six years ago, the famous saying of Saint Catherine of Siena gained worldwide notoriety through the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.  In the opening of his sermon at the wedding service, the Anglican Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, reminded the royal couple:

"Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire." So said Saint Catherine of Siena whose festival day it is today. Marriage is intended to be a way in which man and woman help each other to become what God meant each one to be, their deepest and truest selves.

While situated within the context of marriage, Bishop Chartres' message can easily be applied to life in general, especially life within the family and other forms of human community:

A spiritual life grows as love finds its centre beyond ourselves. Faithful and committed relationships offer a door into the mystery of spiritual life in which we discover this: the more we give of self, the richer we become in soul; the more we go beyond ourselves in love, the more we become our true selves and our spiritual beauty is more fully revealed.

The call to become our "deepest and truest selves" has a very appealing ring.  The search for one's true self which often begins in adolescence can continue throughout one's life.  As we grow in self-knowledge, we delight in discovering talents and special qualities which make us unique.  However, every so often, when we reflect upon an action we have committed or an attitude which we hold, we think: I don't like this - this is not me.  In contrast, we experience deep peace and joy when we have done something to make a positive difference in someone's life: a kind word, a decision to give someone benefit of doubt, a patient response in place of a brusque retort, forgiveness instead of resentment.

Last Friday, our students and teachers celebrated the feast of St. Catherine of Siena with Siena Day - a day of prayer, praise and worship, catechesis, and active service.  Our eighth grade students, who will step beyond our school community in less than a month, served as leaders throughout the day; they hosted Bible studies, shared personal faith testimonials, assisted with service projects, and guided our students in prayer during Adoration.  We are grateful for their gift of time and talent.  Here is a video of some highlights of the day's events which our students enjoyed during the closing rally at the end of the day.

In one of his recent homilies, Pope Francis reminds us: "The saints teach us that the world is changed beginning with the conversion of one's own heart, and that this happens through the mercy of God."  Saint Catherine of Siena teaches us that every thought, every word, every action of ours has the potential to "set the world ablaze" with the love of Christ.  Let us follow her example and teach our children to strive to think, speak, and act in ways that build up others around us and serve as channels of God's mercy and goodness.

God bless,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.

There will be an internet safety and digital citizenship presentation for our middle school students on Friday, May 5.  The presentation will be hosted by a member of the Cobb County Police Department, Crimes Against Children Unit / ICAC Task Force.  The free time offered by the upcoming summer months tends to invite young people to increase their online activities - it is therefore extra important for them to learn strategies for using their devices in positive, virtuous, and safe ways.
