Greetings Glenbard West Community -

This newsletter is filled with important information regarding the end of the year finals as well as our back-to-school days for the 2017-2018 school year. Also included are student recognitions in academic achievement, athletics and activities. All of us are very proud of the many accomplishments of our young people here at Glenbard West. It is hard for me to believe that this school year is coming to an end.

The second week of May is teacher appreciation week. I feel so lucky to work in a school with so many unbelievable teachers who work hard every day for the benefit of our students. Glenbard West has accomplished some amazing things this year with our teachers. We rely on them to help us maintain the spirit of high achievement along with a culture of support and inclusion. Here is a list of just some of the accolades that we should celebrate.

U.S.News and World Report lists Glenbard West as the 13th best High School in Illinois. 8 of the schools ahead of us are Chicago Magnet schools with selective enrollment.
Over 60 percent of our students take at least one AP class by the end of high school.
186 freshmen will be honored at this year's underclassmen honors convocation.
Teachers at West are continually honing their craft and innovating in the classroom.
Local Scholarships will give out over $100,000 to our seniors for college support.
Counselors, Nurse and our related services staff (all licensed professionals) provide continual support and guidance for all students.
Students at West pursue their interests in the visual and performing arts. At Glenbard West we celbrate those expressions.
Over 120 seniors will march at graduation with gold stoles, denoting a 5.0 higher GPA.
Students at West are recognized for achievements in academics, character and athletics.
94% of Glenbard West students go on to a post-secondary experience.

When students talk to me about their experiences at West, so many of them are able to reflect on the positive impact of our teachers. When our seniors go off to pursue amazing experiences beyond high school, they recognize how our teachers made that possible. Teachers actually help to shape not only the future of individual students, but also the future of our world. I congratulate all of the Glenbard West teachers, who share a sense of purpose and are committed to excellence when it comes to serving our students. Go West!

TECHNOLOGY CENTER OF DUPAGE - The last day of student attendance for 2nd semester at TCD will be Tuesday, May 25, 2017. Students are to report to study hall unless parent calls to excuse them.

EXAM MAKE-UP - Students who have an excused absence from an exam may make arrangements with their teacher to make up the exam during the Exam Make-up Session. Students may also arrange with teachers to make up exams during Resource Periods.

RESCHEDULED EXAMS - Students who have three exams on Day 1 or Day 2, may elect to change or move one of their exams to the Rescheduled/Makeup time slot on Day 3. All exam reschedules must be completed 1 week before the exam. Students can pick up the reschedule form in the Dean's office. Complete forms must be turned in by Wednesday, May 24th.

QUIET STUDY AREAS - Supervised quiet study areas will be available for students who wish to study during their free period. There are to be no students in the halls without a pass during the exam periods. All students are to remain in their classes for the entire period.

CAFETERIA SERVICE - The Bridge in the cafeteria will be open for breakfast in the morning and for snacks during passing periods, all three days of Final Exams.

Matter of Pride

Matter of Pride is a recognition award given to students who

demonstrate through their actions, quality character that promotes

Glenbard West. Nominations come from staff members as well as

individuals within our communities. Ten nominees are selected
monthly and presented with certificates and t-shirts.

Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school district in recognition

of students who have studied and attained a high proficiency in two or more

languages, with one of those languages being English, by high school graduation.

The Seal of Biliteracy is noted on the high school transcript and takes the form of a

gold sticker provided with the diploma of a graduating senior. The seal serves as a

statement of accomplishment for future employers as well as college admission.

Athletic Update

Glenbard West Athletics once again has had an amazing year with much of the spring still to follow. Unmatched participation along with continued success contributes to the pride, tradition, and excellence that West is known for. We are proud of our 799 Hilltopper athletes that have been participating at West in athletics this spring. We are so thankful to our District and Board of Education leadership to recognize the importance of extracurricular activities along with the strong commitment and dedication of our coaching staff to provide an outstanding learning experience for our young adults.

There are many great opportunities to get out and support our spring teams as they prepare for postseason competition. Our Boys' Gymnastics team will host the IHSA Sectional on Thursday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Biester Gymnasium. We will also be hosting the WSC Silver Division Girls' Track Meet on Saturday, May 6 at 9:00 a.m. at Duchon Field. We look forward to hosting IHSA Regional Boys Volleyball the week of May 22^nd.

In the spring, many teams will experience changes in their practice and game schedule due to weather. We encourage everyone to stay up to date with all changes on our athletic website at http://il.8to18.com/glenbardwest for the most recent updates and game schedules. There is also an App that can be downloaded titled "My 8to18" that can notify you of real-time changes.

Summer is right around the corner and there are many great opportunities to get involved with over 75 Glenbard West athletic camps through the Glen Ellyn Park District. The complete list of camps can be found on our website along with the Glen Ellyn Park District website at www.gepark.org. There is truly something for everyone and we encourage everyone to get involved here at Glenbard West.

Please note that fall sports will begin for football on Monday, August 7, 2017. All other fall sports include boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, boys soccer, girls volleyball, girls tennis, and girls field hockey begin on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. In order to participate, registration must be completed on the parent portal for PowerSchool which includes the Athletic Code agreement and concussion awareness agreement. In addition, a current physical must be turned into the Athletic Office prior to practicing. The Glenbard West Athletic Handbook can be found on the Athletic website as well. GO WEST!

News from Student Services

On May 16th, the school social workers (Jessica Walters and Bridget Mazzone), along with

Alby Zander (health teacher) will be speaking to our senior class focusing on the social

emotional learning competencies introduced in the February Principal's Newletter.

The core competencies are:

● Self-Awareness

● Self-Management

● Social Awareness

● Relationship Skills

● Responsible Decision Making

During the presentation we will focus on the core competencies of relationship skills and responsible decision making as they embark on their next chapter of post-secondary

endeavors. Our goal is to promote healthy communication strategies in order to create and maintain positive relationships. These strategies include assertiveness, self-advocacy, and identifying intrapersonal supports. Additionally, we will encourage students to keep their

morals and future goals in mind, as they are faced with independent decision-making. The mission of this presentation is to equip them with strategies for not only academic, but life

long success.

Tips from Student Services as we enter the summer months:

During unstructured times, such as the summer break, it is important to help our students navigate the competencies of self-management and responsible decision-making. As we

know, idle time can elicit boredom which may lead to unhealthy choices. According to

research from Psychology in the Schools, students benefits from structured activities which generate higher levels of self-esteem, satisfaction, engagement in life activities, social competence, and overall improved mental health. Encourage your student to stay in stride,

take care of themselves, and stay productive.

Ideas for students:

● Obtain a summer job

● Go to a camp link

● Have fun outside

● Volunteer in the community link

● Enroll in a Bridge summer school class, etc. link

Summer school, community read valuable to all

As the end of the regular school year draws near, I encourage you to check out our summer program offerings and enroll your teen in summer school at sr.glenbard.org.

Summer school is a valuable resource for students who want to:

Make room in their schedule
Explore an area of interest in a noncredit class
Take a Bridge class to build skills before taking a more rigorous class
Re-take a course

The variety of credit and Bridge courses includes:

Glenbard Parent Series Community Read

This summer, please participate in the Glenbard Parent Series Community Read by reading "Enrique's Journey," by Sonia Nazario.

This national bestseller is the story of a Honduran boy's search for his mother in the U.S., the struggle of a family to unite and their fight to heal deep wounds. In the book, Nazario asks questions about the economic, social and human factors in the debate about America's newcomers.

We are so fortunate to have the nationally recognized Glenbard Parent Series, which brings bestselling authors to our community to discuss topics important to our parents and students. There is great value in coming together to discuss issues facing young people. Please read "Enrique's Journey" and save the date to hear Nazario speak at Glenbard East on Aug. 23.
