Run Wild Missoula Executive Director:It's Time To Be Kind
by Tony Banovich, Executive Director

What a grand and glorious start to spring we've had. Lots of warm, pleasant days that have been more dry than wet. The result has been an explosion of runners and walkers just ahead of the imminent explosion of green grass, leaves on the trees and flowers in their beds.

Like everyone else, I've been making sure to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. As the temperatures hit the 70's last Friday, I spent some time on the "M" Trail and the lower reaches of Mount Sentinel. It was great to see so many fit and active people out and about on the trails. But, it got me to thinking about the need to be kind when we're all out there on the great trails that we have in Missoula.

With that much density of use, we need to remember to be kind to one another. Take the lead in saying hello to other users. Flash a friendly smile. Wave. Yield the right of way to faster users or larger groups. We all need to share these resources; and, it sure helps when it's a pleasant experience. So, don't be "that guy" or "that girl" that is rude and sour. As members of Run Wild Missoula, set the example of how to be kind, embracing and inclusive when you're out using our trails.

Just as importantly, we need to be kind to the trails themselves. It's great that we have such an amazing system right out our back door; but, we need to be careful that we don't love the trails to death. Always, always follow good trail and recreation practices. Stay on the established trails. Especially when they're muddy. Your shoes will dry out and clean off; but, moving out of the established tread just causes excessive trail widening and erosion. Don't cut switch-backs. Don't harass wildlife. Keep your dogs under control. Pack In Pack Out (including animal waste). Obey signs and seasonal closures. Don't trespass.

Pretty simple really. But, like so many things, a few simple acts can go a long ways to making life better for everyone.

See you on the roads, tracks and trails.

Our Mission - Our Values
by Tony Banovich, Executive Director

In late January, your Board Of Directors spent a day and a half in looking at Run Wild Missoula's priorities for the coming year. As part of that discussion, the Board reviewed the club's Mission and Core Values. After some additional discussion at their February and March meetings, the Board Of Director has confirmed and adopted the following:

Mission:
Run Wild Missoula promotes and supports running and walking for people of all ages and abilities.

Core Values:
1. Honesty, Integrity, Professionalism and Excellence in Reputation
2. Creation of a community of runners and walkers that:
* Encourages inclusion and acceptance of all ages and abilities
* Promotes a fit, active and healthy lifestyle for our members
* Provides for multiple opportunities to safely participate, train, learn and race for members of all financial means
3. Giving back to the community in meaningful ways
4. Supporting local vendors, businesses and economy - especially our event sponsors.

More than just words on paper, this Mission and these Core Values guide the decisions we make on our mix of races, use of club resources; member benefits & amenities; community donations; and, how we support our sport. We hope that you'll continue to join and support us as we work to live up to these standards.

Spring Race Season Is Upon Us!!!!

Lots and lots (and lots) - did I say lots? -  of opportunity to run, walk and race as we roll full bore into spring.

First up on the RWM calendar would be the Run For The Trees on April 12th (Sunday). RWM has partnered with Missoula Parks & Recreation on this event for 2015 to help celebrate Missoula's Urban Forest. With a 1-mile fun run, 5K and 10K - there's something for everyone. Mayor Engen will be on hand to plant a ceremonial tree in Silver Park; and, there will be fun activities all morning long. More information and registration at Run For The Trees

Then we host the Superfun(d) Run in Bonner on April 25th. Come and take part in a celebration of the Bonner community and the Two Rivers Confluence (Blackfoot and Clark Fork). Plenty of distance options - this event caters to young and old; newbies and veterans; and folks that just want to have a good time on the Bonner area trails with friends and family. Information and registration at Superfun(d) Run

Bloomsday takes place on May 3rd in Spokane (see below for more about riding to Bloomsday with RWM).

May 9th sees the 43rd running of the Riverbank Run. More information available via the Missoula YMCA.

Saturday, May 16th is the Susan Komen Race For the Cure in Helena (see below for more about riding to Helena with Providence Health Foundation).

Sunday, May 17th is the Runner's Edge 11 Miles To Paradise trail race. Hopefully you're one of the lucky folks who got into the field before the race filled up.

Sunday, May 31st will be Run Wild Missoula's Missoula Mile, followed the next weekend by our ever popular Pengelly Double and Single Dips (June 6th). We're in the process of getting registration for both of these events open soon; so, check the Run Wild Missoula website regularly for race and registration information.

Runner Friendly

So, you like traveling to some out the great out of town races; but, don't like the idea of driving your own vehicle. Well, you're in luck.

Run Wild Missoula will once again provide the opportunity to Ride The Bloomsday Bus With Us. By taking the bus, you'll have the opportunity to travel to and from Spokane on the same day; share some good times with fellow club members; and, have your race packet waiting for you when the bus hits Spokane. The trip will cost $55 and is limited to the first 45 registrants. The price also includes morning coffee and snacks, as well as post-race beverages and snacks for the trip home. You'll need to register on your own for the race itself; but, leave the rest of the trip logistics to us. Info and registration at Bloomsday Bus

RWM is also pleased to be able to assist Providence Health Foundation in coordinating a bus to the Susan Komen Race For The Cure. Due to the Foundation's generosity, the bus will be free to all cancer survivors who want to go and take part in this event. Friends, families and others are welcome with donations being requested. Info and registration at Race To The Cure Bus

Runner's Edge will also be offering a bus from Missoula for the 11 Miles To Paradise trail race. Another great opportunity to let someone else drive that day and to be environmentally responsible. More information can be found on the RE events page at Paradise Bus

Run Wild Missoula has been sponsoring monthly Back of the Pack social run-walk-eat-drink events since April 2011.
These events have been scattered around the Missoula & Bitterroot Valleys from Frenchtown to East Missoula to Stevensville. Many have started and ended at public parks. Some have been hosted in members' homes. Yet others have used a restaurant or brewery (especially popular in Stevi) as the base camp. Potluck snacks are the most popular format. We have gathered under all weather conditions and have enjoyed a wide variety of participants, both one-timers and "regulars." Over the years monthly participation has averaged in the 15-20 range.

Last month, the BOP social reached a new high with 33 folks in attendance. It was a rainy, gusty day but the combined draw of running/walking in the Lee Metcalf refuge and potlucking at Blacksmith Brewing Company proved irresistible. Of the total gathered around the tables quaffing craft beer, a third were there for the first time ever. Feedback from newbies was enthusiastic.

The Back of the Pack is not an exclusive sub-set of the RWM community. We are friendly, and welcome even the faster runners. You do not have to qualify by proving you can slow down to a 15- or 20-minute mile. You just have to come to the party willing to set the ego aside and to value social contact over competition for the occasion. Every BOP social has some participants who walk a couple of miles. Most do some variation on the Galloway run-walk-run method. Yet others come a little later than the beginning for the "social-only" alternative. It's all good.

The next BOP social is on the calendar for 3:00 pm, Saturday April 18, at Great Burn Brewing Company off Brooks Street in south Missoula. Buy a beer or soda, bring a snack to share, and come with a smile on your face. We would love to have you!

As the days start to get longer and warmer more of us will start to migrate away from our indoor gym workouts and flock to the hills and trails for our workouts. We can run hills, do our speed work, tempo runs and distance runs on the fresh spring trails; the things we have waited all winter for. Remember that indoor workouts have their place in any running routine. A lot of the foundational work we have discussed takes place indoors and our strength training still needs to be a part of the weekly workouts.

This month Jamie and I will take you through exercises for strengthening your quadriceps (muscles above your knee), gluteal (butt) muscles, calf muscles and core. The exercises will build upon your foundation and begin to build strength and endurance in some of the muscles you will need ready to handle your spring running. Once again the videos will be linked to a youtube page for you to view as needed. Click here to see brief introductories of the exercises with further informaiton on the linked youtube page. We hope you are enjoying your running, training and racing!
