The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology voiced its opposition to President Trump's proposed budget which calls for a $5.8 billion cut to the National Institutes of Health. 

FASEB called on Congress to block the 20% cut.

"The proposed cut to NIH is, quite simply, a travesty because it threatens the life of every American, harms our economy, and abdicates the United States' role as a world leader in research," FASEB President Hudson Freeze, PhD said in a statement.

"Advances in biomedical and biological research have improved the health of our citizens, generated new treatments for life-threatening diseases, and enhanced our quality of life. Opportunities for additional progress are enormous and at our doorstep, but that promising future success requires sustained and predictable growth in the federal investment in the nation's research enterprise. The proposed reduction in research funding is unconscionable and endangers the national security of our country,"    

Research performed at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology could eventually help quickly identify metastatic cells, such as those found in breast cancers, according to researchers.

"A critical step in metastases formation is cancer-cell invasion through tissue," according to the article published in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering.

A team of researchers repaired a hole in a mouse's skull by regrowing "quality bone," a breakthrough that could drastically improve the care of people who suffer severe trauma to the skull or face, according to a Northwestern University article. 

The work by a joint team of Northwestern Engineering and University of Chicago researchers shows that a combination of technologies was able to regenerate the skull bone with supporting blood vessels in just the discrete area needed without developing scar tissue.

The method was also more rapid than previous methods.

Program: The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares Masters, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship.

Locations: There will be both an in-person (in NYC, DC, SF) and online section of the fellowship. There is a common application for both the online and in-person sections.  

Dates: All sections will be from 2017-06-19 - 2017-08-11
