Business Assistance Program
Success Story

The Valley Economic Alliance (TVEA) continues to connect businesses to the resources and leadership of the San Fernando Valley. TVEA's recent success is Jesus Angulo, owner of Angulo Food Services. They are located in Valley Glen and have 13 employees.

Jesus has been in the food industry for most of his life and had a food truck on the campus of Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) for 3 years. He was asked to run the College's full service cafeteria, which was a new facility built in 2016.

Every business leader has challenges, however many do not know where to turn. Jesus reached out to Kenny Broderick of TVEA's business assistance team and expressed having rent increase, administrative costs, and oversight issues. Since LAVC student foot traffic had decreased, he struggled with keeping staff employed, bringing down operating costs, and needing to retain staff to do more than one job duty.

Kenny worked with Jesus to prioritize his challenges and immediately provided resources to help his business. Program Manager Angelica Banuelos of Valley Economic Development Corporation North Valley Business Source guided him in creating a business plan and provided Quick Books classes. Clemente Delatorre, Territory Manager of Heartland Payment Systems, addressed his merchant services and operating expense issues. These resources helped Jesus develop a business plan, improved his challenging operating expenses, cross training staff, and helped develop better bookkeeping practices. He was able to keep 6 of his staff employed, continue to provide great food in a timely manner, and manage the daily operations.

Women's Collaborative Mentoring Program

The Valley Economic Alliance has launched its first Women's Collaborative Mentoring Program (WCMP)!

The WCMP is a result driven accelerator focused on women owners' specific needs, and connects entrepreneurs with highly skilled mentors and business development programs to ensure they achieve sustainable growth. The WCMP is designed to solve problems affecting Economically Disadvantaged Women Owned Small Business (EDWOSB,) provide greater opportunities, and build a powerful collaborative business community.
Women accepted into the collaborative will have a sequential program designed specifically for them. Women, who do not qualify, will enter the Directive Training Program through Business Development Center partners. The program also offers mentoring grants to serve the EDWOSB community.

Gail Lara is Director of the WCMP and offers over two  decades of experience in business development, training, and leadership.

"The problem with current training is that sixteen hours isn't enough time for an aspiring entrepreneur to complete a business plan and be ready for lending. Their lack of direction combined with no advisory team and low/no start-up capital, results in high failure rate of women owned businesses. Our goal is to help women achieve $150k in annual revenue and prepare her for funding," said Gail.

WCMP is currently seeking sponsors and investors. Please contact Gail Lara at 818 359-2692 or [email protected] for more information.

How California is Responding to Defective Airbags
Here's a statistic that might startle auctions and dealerships in the Golden State and beyond.
Southern California leads the nation in fatalities caused by defective airbags, according to Airbag Recall: Southern California, a group that comprises community organizations, public interest groups, private companies, elected officials, faith communities and other concerned parties unified in the effort to raise consumer awareness about the ongoing airbag inflator recall.
With claims such as that one as a backdrop, Silicon Valley tech startup Recall Masters explained that it is using digital forensics - the process of culling, processing and organizing enormous quantities of unstructured recall data - to identify hundreds of thousands of problem vehicles per month.
Recall Masters claims to have compiled these five achievements:
  • Identified 63 million vehicles in open recall since 2000.
  • Directed hundreds of thousands of recalled vehicles into dealerships for repairs - reducing the danger on America's roads.
  • Plugged 46 data sources into its system, making it the most comprehensive recall database in the world.
  • Been the first software company to digitize "don't drive" and "stop sale" recall tracking into its SaaS API and batch processing platforms.
  • Generated millions of dollars in revenue without any outside funding.
"In southern California, many of us drive or ride in a car every day, several times a day. If your vehicle contains a defective airbag, this part of your daily life could threaten your life," said Kenn Phillips, President and CEO of The Valley Economic Alliance, an organization whose mission is to elevate the economic vitality and stability of a five-city region including Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Los Angeles and San Fernando.
"To confront this issue head-on, The Valley Economic Alliance has partnered with auto body shops throughout the area to check drivers' vehicles for outstanding recalls and to educate them on how to get their airbags replaced free of charge at a local dealership," Phillips continued. "Our organization is committed to supporting outreach efforts throughout Southern California and to helping prevent another deadly accident caused by a defective airbag inflator."
