, at Ballard High on May 11-13 and 18-20 with curtain at 7:30 PM. This Victorian era plot set in England is cleverly written and promises plenty of laughs.
Two young gentlemen have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives. Jack Worthing (Diego Roberts-Buceta) has invented a brother, Ernest, who he uses as an excuse to leave his dull country life behind to visit the ravishing Gwendolen (Hanna Uselding). Algy Montcrieff (Nick Requarth) decides to take the name Ernest when visiting Worthing's young and beautiful ward, Cecily (Sophia Rice), at the country manor. Things start to go awry when they end up together in the country, and their deceptions are discovered - threatening to spoil their romantic pursuits.
The Ballard Thespians are more than up to the task with the comic delivery and word play. In addition to these four characters, Lady Bracknell (Meg Shepard) strives to keep up all appearances as dictated by the rules of the aristocracy and makes the most outlandish declarations while presiding with great authority. The cast is rounded out by Brendan Hickey, Eileen MacDonald, Scotty McKinney, Skyler Neuen and Riley Guiles.
As always, Director Shawn Riley transports us to another place and time with set and costumes. The dresses are beautiful silks and velvet in elaborate period styles. The simple elegance of the sets form the perfect backdrop. This play is both a breath of fresh air for those of us seeking some springtime, and a humorous look at propriety and marriage in 1890.
