May 2017 Preservation News & Events
TPM pinpoint
May is National Preservation Month:
This Place Matters!

Everyone has places that are important to them. Places they care about. Places that matter. This Place Matters is a national campaign that encourages people to celebrate the places that are meaningful to them and to their communities. During the month of May we especially celebrate these places that matter during National Preservation Month, designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and its state and local partners like the Cleveland Restoration Society. Throughout the month of May, tag places that matter to YOU with the #ThisPlaceMatters hashtag on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Follow us on social media to find out what places matter to those around you!

Excitement is building for the 2017 Celebration of Preservation awards program! Tickets range in price from $10 - $30 per person. Sponsors for this year's award program are Platinum supporters: K&D Group, Sandvick Architects, and The Sherwin-Williams Company. Illuminating Building
New Applications to the OHPTC
The latest application deadline for the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit saw eighteen submissions from Northeast Ohio. The largest projects in Cleveland applying for catalytic credits are the Illuminating Building (shown here), Fenway Hall, and Terminal Tower of Union Terminal Group, all part of the wave of projects downtown transforming old office spaces into modern apartments. Smaller projects range from Trinity Cathedral Church Home to the 3101 Euclid Ave. Building. A number of projects in downtown Akron also applied for tax credits. Projects will be reviewed by the Ohio Development Agency and the Ohio History Connection, with selection by June 30. Photo from crainscleveland.com.

Could we Power Our Economy with Old Buildings?
If we focused on preserving old buildings instead of building new ones, could we make our economy bigger and stronger? Stephanie Meeks, CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, recently gave a thirty-minute interview centering around this question. Meeks talked about why our economy needs old buildings, what types of places we need to do a better job protecting and how they prioritize what gets saved and what doesn't.
