Southern Idaho and Chobani  made national news this month first with the front-page of  The New York Times  on April 3rd, then the reporter's reflections the next day in  Returning West to Find Big Changes (and Plenty of Yogurt) in Idaho .  Later that week, Chobani's founder Hamdi Ulukaya was  featured on 60 Minutes  and recognized as one of  Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People . Features like these boost Southern Idaho's brand as a great place for businesses, employment, and living.

- Kirk Johnson, The New York Times

Our region's dairy industry and processors like Chobani impact more than just the news we read -- they also have a profound impact in our economy. This begs the question  "Ho w does Idaho's dairy industry and its workforce impact the economy of Southern Idaho?"

Answers may be found in the recent study conducted by the University of Idaho's McClure Center for Public Policy Research titled  "Community Impacts of Idaho's Dairy Workforce."  Findings were released in March 2017 and compare Idaho's dairy growth with national trends, analyze labor on the dairy farms and in processing plants, illustrate the effects on economic well-being, and the impacts of the dairy industry and its workers on area schools, health care, and law enforcement. If you are interested in details about the dairy industry in the Magic Valley and our economy, this study is worth reading.

Idaho dairy facts and figures of interest:
  • Agriculture is Idaho's largest economic contributor with the dairy industry representing one-third of the agricultural sector.
  • In 2015, the dairy industry supported Idaho's economy with 39,400 jobs made up of 3,700 processing jobs, 8,100 dairy manufacturing jobs, and 27,600 in supporting businesses.
  • Idaho received $10.4 Billion in economic output in sales from the dairy industry in 2015, and the dairy industry represented $160 Million in state and local taxes.
  • Over one-half of Idaho's dairy processors, representing 80% of the total dairy manufacturing capacity, are located in the Magic Valley along with 72% of Idaho's dairy cows.

The dairy industry is an integral part of the Magic Valley's economy. The University of Idaho is partnering education, industry and economic development to construct a $45 Million research and education initiative to build the Center for Agriculture Food and the Environment (CAFE). Stay tuned as more information is expected to be released next month!

Investor Spotlight
First American Title Company's story began in 1905 when William Herman Stufflebeam saw the need for a business that performed title abstracts of the county's land records. Herman ran the business for 37 years and after his death his wife Ruth ran it until she retired in 1969. Their son Dwain then took the reins and began expanding into Southeastern Idaho and Montana. First American Title Holding Co. was formed in 2003 and later became Title Financial Corporation, serving as an exclusive agent for First American Title Insurance Company.

Three generations later and still headquartered in Blackfoot, Idaho, grandson Quinn Stufflebeam now serves as CEO serving 29 counties in Idaho, 21 locations in Montana and 3 locations in Wyoming. First American Title Company offers title insurance, escrow services, 1031 Exchanges, foreclosure services, long-term escrow collection, and Canaan subscription plans.
