Chicago Running Groups Head to Boston
On Monday, nearly 150 runners from Chicago groups will toe the start line at the 121st Boston Marathon.
Throughout the winter, several groups have been training with Boston qualifiers in the Chicago area to prepare for America's biggest marathon. Fleet Feet alone is sending 100 runners to compete as part of its Boston Bound training program.
"The Boston Bound Fleet Feet group has been meeting Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings since the first of January," Dan Daly, one of the group's coaches, says.
Another group bringing athletes to Boston is the Chicago Area Runner's Association. Its program, CARA Boston Performance, has been running for several years, and this year, the new Director of Training Leah Bohr teamed up with 1996 Olympic marathoner Jenny Spangler to customize a training plan.
Since January, nearly 40 runners have done various hill and speed training workouts, says CARA Director of Events and Marketing Greg Hipp.

Ben Beach to Become First Runner to Finish 50 Consecutive Boston Marathons On April 17, Ben Beach, 67, will be racing his 50th consecutive Boston Marathon, and will become the first athlete to ever run 50 straight years at the same marathon.
Because Beach has run more consecutive Boston Marathons than anyone else, he leads the Boston's Quarter Century Club (QCC) list, where a runner has to run 25 or more consecutive Boston Marathons to be a member. After the 2017 Boston, he will become the charter member of a new club: The Half Century Club.
"I'm excited about it and grateful to all those who have helped me keep the streak going," Beach says. "I just take it one year at a time, planning to run as long as I can."

Tips for Your First Boston Marathon
By Chicago Athlete Ambassador Denise Sauriol
Even though this will be my 10th Boston, I still get just as excited and honored as when I ran my first Boston Marathon back in 1999. Remember, Y2K? We all survived that and I survived my first Boston Marathon. In retrospect though, there were a lot of things that I wish I knew ahead of time about Marathon Monday that I learned on the fly versus being fair warned by a Veteran Unicorn. I am writing this to give you first timers a heads up around what to expect at The Boston Marathon!
From my experience, running Boston for the first time was right up there with running my first marathon which was back in 1994. The two marathons were very similar because, one, I didn't think I could finish my first, let alone qualify for THE Boston Marathon and two, I was beyond intimidated over hitting the infamous wall at my first marathon and at Boston, surviving Heartbreak Hill.
So, let's get down to my top 10 Tips for a RunTastic Boston Marathon!
