April 27, 2017

Earlier this week, we mailed you information regarding plans for enhanced efforts at CJ to address the issue of substance abuse among adolescents, a topic becoming more prevalent in national and local headlines over recent years. The letter more fully explained our recent efforts to take a fresh look at the issue which included reviewing research and data, and speaking with other schools who have successfully implemented drug awareness and testing programs.

Because we believe that every student would benefit from a program that includes current strategies for education, prevention and intervention, CJ will move forward with a drug awareness and testing program, with voluntary testing during the 2017-2018 school year, and mandatory testing for all students during the 2018-2019 school year. More details about the development of this initiative and overall goals for the program were also included in the letter, and are also provided online with a FAQ section that will continue to be developed as plans for the program are finalized.

All parents are invited to a parent meeting in the auditorium next Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. to review information and for the opportunity to ask questions. In addition, informational sessions are scheduled for juniors, sophomores and freshmen during homeroom this Friday.

As a leader for excellence in Catholic education, Chaminade Julienne will continue to find ways to improve the Catholic experience for our students and families. We believe that this initiative is another way for students to understand the value and dignity of their lives as children of God, and to help them remove impediments that would prevent them from living out God's calling for their lives.

MINISTRY & SERVICE

From the Chaplain's Office
Christ is risen!  Alleluia! He is risen indeed! Allelluia, Alleluia! Even though stores have put their Easter decorations on clearance and moved on to Memorial Day, we as a Church continue to celebrate the Season of Easter - for 50 days! This is a time to rejoice in the new life that God offers us each day. St. Augustine once wrote, "We are an Easter people, and 'Alleluia' is our song." Let's live out our Easter identity and continue to shout "Alleluia," giving thanks for the gift of salvation that Christ brings us.

National Religious Brothers Day
On  May 1, the Church in the U.S. will recognize and celebrate Vowed Religious Brothers. Our own Marianist Hall stands as a testament to the countless Marianist Brothers and Priests (known colloquially as "Ordained Brothers") who have served at Chaminade and then Chaminade Julienne (Marianist Hall was once the residence for the Marianists housing some 30-40 Religious at a time, and our current chapel was where they gathered each day to pray together.) On  May 1, I would encourage you to offer up a prayer of gratitude for all the Marianists and Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur who have ministered in our hallways.
