Senior Recognition Convocation: 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, CFL Main Hall. Celebration honoring all members of the class of 2017, and recognizing those who have earned Latin honors, those elected to Phi Beta Kappa and honor societies in their major fields, those who received post-graduate awards, and academic all-conference athletes. John Moeller, professor of political science, will give the address. The printed program will also contain senior paper/project titles. Following convocation, a group photo of the Class of 2017 will be taken.
Luther College will hold a celebration of life for Weston Noble at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The service is open to the public with general admission seating; tickets will not be issued for this event. The service will also be streamed live on the Luther website. If you plan to attend the service, we ask that you fill out this RSVP form to help college staff prepare for the number of guests. For more information, visit luther.edu/weston.
Student Research Symposium: 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 5. Opening ceremony in CFL Main Hall, followed by a full day of concurrent oral sessions and performances, complimentary dessert on Bentdahl Commons, a poster session, and evening performances. Luther College will host the Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in the NRH, An award ceremony and reception will follow the recital. The recital will feature the recipient of the scholarship, Luther sophomore Cynthia Heck.
Award-winning media, e-commerce and cybersecurity entrepreneur Mohamed Amine Belarbi will deliver a lecture titled "Unleashing the Entrepreneur within Us" at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in F.W. Olin 102. In his talk, Belarbi attempts to convey that entrepreneurship is a mindset and not an industry or skill-related ability. The lecture is presented by the Luther Economics and Business Department and funded by the Dennis and Suzanne Birkestrand Chair in Economics and Business.
Featuring a cast of 35 talented students, "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert and Sullivan will be presented by the Music Department at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Jewel Theatre. Tickets are available online or at the Luther Ticket Office. Directed by Andrew Whitfield and Ed Andereck, "The Gondoliers" follows a tale of royalty, marriage and misadventure.
Holden Vespers will be held on Wednesday, May 3 at 9:00 p.m. in the CFL recital hall. We’ll gather for a time of prayer and worship using Holden Evening Prayer. For more information, contact [email protected].
Spring wildflowers and garlic mustard pull at Luther's Lionberger Preserve. This preserve is rich in native spring wildflowers, but also threatened by invasive garlic mustard. We will pull garlic mustard and do a wildflower walk as well. Sunday, May 7, 2 - 4:30 p.m. Meet at the lower parking lot at Sampson Hoffland Labs. Please R.S.V.P. to Molly McNicoll if you plan to attend, so we can plan for vehicle transportation to the site. All are welcome!

Human rights lawyer Kathy Manley will join Ikraan Abdurahmān and Mariam Abu-Ali, whose brothers were imprisoned under the auspices of terrorism-related investigations, to discuss their experiences with the U.S. justice system and the Patriot Act in a panel titled "Islam and Pre-emptive Incarceration" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in Olin 102. The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms.
Luther will host Iowa Representative Mark Smith as keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial lecture, which honors the life of Luther College social work faculty member Don Kemp. The lecture will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 in Baker Commons. In his talk, "Social Workers Stand Up," Smith will discuss the connection between social work and social policy, and how he has embodied this in his career as a social worker and elected official.

Move Out Helpers Wanted: The Sustainability Office is seeking students to work or volunteer on behalf of an organization to assist with move out waste diversion efforts. Join our crew for the week and help minimize the amount of waste sent to the landfill by talking to students about donation options, organizing move out rooms and perhaps even doing a little bit of dumpster diving. To get on the schedule, sign up by May 5.
The 32nd annual Luther College Entrepreneurial Showcase was held Tuesday, April 11, in Peace Dining Room. This year, six student entrepreneurs were selected as finalists for the program displayed their ventures during the networking session. Sophomore Jason Lewis received the grand prize of $5,000 for his company Jim Bob's Painting. Senior Jackson VanKirk and sophomore Anna Helt won $2,500 as the runners up. Emily Schroeder, Belal Krayem and Kyle Livingood were finalists.
