2015 Domaine Le Clos Noly Pouilly Fuisse Courtelong
We have been looking for an exceptional Pouilly Fuisse for a while now. Though that would seem easy enough, the Pouillys we generally see in this market are  either mass produced negociant wines or of the very expensive variety which is not necessarily what we are looking for when it comes to Pouilly Fuisse. That may be attributed to the French keeping the excellent and reasonably priced stuff around to drink themselves, and indeed 80 percent of Domaine Clos Noly's production is sold to the restaurant community in that immediate area.  We believe exceptional Pouilly Fuisse should be indicative of the renowned limestone and clay soils which are found in the best of these village vineyards, Pouilly should be bright and food worthy and amazing Pouilly Fuisse should not break the bank. Saturday night we enjoyed dinner with importer Blake Maso and restauranteur Charles Bruen . A main reason for the gathering was we had been waiting for this Pouilly to arrive. Blake had been talking it up, and the 2015 southern white burgs are amazing, well the Le Clos Noly Pouilly Fuisse Cortelong did not disappoint.  ( Chardonnay, un oaked )

The flavor profile; The Clos Noly Pouilly  is from  older vines which are pruned back to produce 30% less yield than is allowed by appellation controls.  Consequently this Pouilly is big and complex. The 2015 vintage was warm. The fruit is bright and this Pouilly is indeed very very bright and very clean, the Noly Pouilly is un oakedLechi, apple and apricot are big in the middle with polished citrus
( tangerine and lime ) lacing the core flavor components.
Charles commented on the excellent structure and acid composition the wine exhibited,  at which point we went to the fridge and produced some extremely spicy red peppercorn infused cheddar cheese. The Pouilly dusted the massive spice no problem, then Michele realized that with spice the  very crisp citrusy finish we had first observed was now filled with white flowers, much like a Marsanne. Drink this Pouilly around the pool with no food and you will be ridiculously happy. Drink it with Sushi or shrimp, crab or mussels and you will be thrilled. Drink it with  spicy BBQ or Asian and you will be amazed at how it changes and gains depth .

All of the very best for spring,
Rex and Michele

Sourced from 40+ year old vineyards located in predominantly calcaire soils, this version of Pouilly-Fuissé is vinified and aged in 100% stainless steel tanks. Calcaire is truly the focus of this wine. From start to finish, the complex, bright floral and lemony flavors are framed in persistent minerality. This wine should evolve slowly and reward the patient.

Domaine Le Clos Noly is named after the oldest vineyard at the domain. It is owned and managed by the charismatic Marie-Pierre Manciat, who represents the fifth generation of vignerons in her family. The estate covers 56 acres spread out among five villages. The domain is meticulously run with the utmost focus on bringing in perfect fruit. With yields that are routinely 20-30 percent lower than what is allowed in each given appellation, Marie-Pierre is able to create wines that are rich and powerful, but also express the limestone-rich soils of each terroir. Domaine Le Clos Noly also practices sustainable viticulture.

Rex & I have been asked to join a wine dinner with Sicilian Firriato Winery.  We have tasted the wines with the importer and are excited to take part in the tasting.
