2017 Legislative Briefing Held on April 27th
The Canton Chamber of Commerce invited State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8) and State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) to provide an update on the state budget on Thursday, April 27th, at the Canton Community Center. Twenty Chamber members, local citizens, and town officials attended. Chamber President Gary Roman welcomed Senator Witkos and Representative LeGeyt and thanked them and the audience for attending. Gary made his initial remarks and then turned the meeting over to our two Legislators.

Tim LeGeyt gave an overview of the process of developing the 2018 budget and attempting to strike a balance to solve the potential $1.7 Billion budget shortfall and meet the needs of local towns and businesses. He was disappointed that the Appropriations Committee, of which he is a member, was unable to move a proposed budget to a vote on the previous day.

Kevin Witkos presented similar views from the Senate's point of view. He echoed his disappointment in being unable to move forward with a budget that would control spending and avoid new taxes on businesses and individuals. He announced that the Senate Republicans would be holding a press conference to outline their budget proposal that afternoon at 2:00 PM.

The audience included First Selectman, Leslee Hill; Chief Administrative Officer, Robert Skinner; Economic Development Agency Chair, Bob Bessel; Chamber Board members, and local business owners. The question and answer period lasted nearly an hour with a free exchange of ideas and opinions. The audience seemed generally satisfied with the responses from Kevin and Tim and their perspective of the process that remains to be resolved.

The Canton Flower Bridge is about to launch its third year of providing beautiful floral displays along the wooden walking bridge, located beside the Farmington River on River Road in Collinsville.  Canton Main Street, Inc. , the originating organization for this project, is especially grateful for the community's positive response to this beautification effort.  The generosity of numerous businesses, organizations and individuals has provided the essential funding needed to develop the flower bridge over the past two years. During this time, the bridge has displayed 11 stunning hanging flower baskets,  5 flower boxes and 3 large stationary planters. As the seasons changed, the bridge transitioned to a beautiful winter display that included evergreen planters and holiday kissing balls.  Additionally, a drip irrigation system was installed to help nurture the flowers through the hot summer months.  Our vision remains focused on the enhancement of Canton's natural beauty using floral displays that will delight residents and visitors to our town. Gallery on the Green presents "Interplay: Joseph Byrne and Elizabeth Gourlay," plus a solo show by Susan Spaniol and a group Calligraphic Art exhibit.
Friday, April 21 through Sunday, May 21
This year's Annual Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Invitational Exhibition is "Interplay: Joseph  Byrne and Elizabeth Gourlay." The artists' work centers on interactions of color, shape, line, and  space. Byrne's paintings begin with still life arrangements of objects; Gourlay calls on her long developed  language of abstraction based on geometric shapes and line. Both build architectural  armatures to carry their personal responses to the surrounding world. In "Interplay," their  works create conversations among themselves and with each other, drawing attention to their  commonality and underscoring their distinctive pathways. Byrne is Professor of Fine Arts at  Trinity College. Gourlay teaches at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts and at Rhode Island School  of Design.

The opening reception is on Saturday, April 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be preceded by a gallery talk by the Byrne and Gorlay at 5:00.
