Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 05 08 17

Parents and Guardians,

Today marks the last week of Advanced Placement (AP) exams for students. This year, we will have 840 students take almost 1,650 exams over the two-week span. It can be a stressful time for students taking the exams, but it marks the opportunity for students and teachers to reap the rewards of their hard work. These statistics are not accidental; they are the result of a strong school partnership between supportive parents, hardworking students, and teachers who work to provide a strong educational experience in the classroom.

Thank you for all you do for our kids.

Sincerely ,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

LHS launches Online Leadership Course for LHS students this summer
This summer, LHS will launch the first of many Online Signature Courses as part of their move into the secondary school online course market. A 7-week long Leadership course will be the inaugural LHS Online Signature Course offered to Lovejoy High School students. Successful completion of the course will satisfy the .5 credit speech graduation requirement. The course will be facilitated by LHS Leadership instructor, Jenay Sherman, and will feature many engaging aspects not regularly found in the standard secondary school online course. Students should check with their guidance counselor for enrollment requirements as space is limited. Click here for more information.

BrightBytes
Lovejoy ISD is partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research organization, to learn more about our students' school and home technology use and the impact it has on instruction. We are reaching out to ask you to take part in the Technology & Learning questionnaire. This is a semi-annual initiative, and your participation is essential in helping us form a more complete picture of the role technology plays in your students' learning.

Senior Project - Children's Miracle Network
Ashton Franquiz, a Junior at Lovejoy High School, will be competing in the Miss Texas Outstanding Teen pageant. She is the reigning Miss Hunt County's Outstanding Teen 2017.  Ashton is a philanthropist at heart and feels blessed to be raised in North Dallas and in the Lovejoy District. She is part of the Majestics leadership team, choir, theatre program, and NHS. She dances outside of school and finds time to give back through the National Charity League. Ashton feels "To much is given, much is required." Ashton believes we all can make a difference, even if it is 1 hour serving somewhere.  Some are called to serve and some are called to give, but by doing something, we can all make a difference.

Over the next several weeks, Ashton is raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. Would you help her in this campaign?  "Your spare change can make a change."  Containers to collect change will be located at each campus.

Sports Physicals and Cardiac Screenings:  July 22

Saturday, July 22, 2017
Willow Springs Middle School
$20 for physicals, payable to Lovejoy Athletics
$15 for cardiac screen, payable to WHO WE PLAY FOR

The Lovejoy Sports Medicine Department is offering sports physicals and hosting WHO WE PLAY FOR for cardiac screenings. Physicals and cardiac screens are open to all 2017-18 incoming 7th - 12th grade student-athletes. A parent or guardian should attend with the student to sign permission forms.

The physical examination consists of the parent or guardian completing a medical history followed by a thorough medical and orthopedic assessment by a host of qualified nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and physicians.

Please RSVP for each student attending physicals and/or cardiac screenings by
clicking here.   Payment is due at WSMS on July 22nd. Payment must be made by checks or cash as no credit cards will be accepted.

Lovejoy ISD requires every 7th - 12th grade student-athlete receive an annual physical prior to participation in sports.

The cardiac screen is not required for participation in athletics at Lovejoy ISD but it is highly recommended. WHO WE PLAY FOR recommends testing at least once during high school.

This is a fundraising event for our Sports Medicine Department.  We appreciate your support.

Additional information regarding sports physicals may be found by
clicking here.

Student Recognition

LHS Student Council
StuCo has been recognized for the following achievements for the 2016-17 School Year:
  • Outstanding Student Council
  • Drugs, Alcohol, Safety and Health
  • Energy and Environment
  • Pride and Patriotism
  • Community Service
  • Sweepstakes
Fewer than 20% of the schools within the Texas Assoc. of Student Councils are recognized in one or more areas, so this is quite an accomplishment to be proud of!

LHS Wrestling
Our freestyle wrestling club recently competed in the Women's Freestyle State Championship and the Men's Team Texas National Duals qualifier. To date, this was our largest group of competitors, with four women and five men wrestling! There were over 600 wrestlers competing in this event from across the state and five of our nine placed in the top four of their division!

Wrestling for Lovejoy High School were:
  • James Ayers
  • Austin Bennett
  • Johnny Dorlon
  • David Gold
  • Lilly Musselman
Ayers (11th grade) won the 100 lb. crown and will represent Team Texas in the Junior national duals in Tulsa, OK in June.

LHS Quiz Bowl
The quiz bowl team finished their season this past weekend after competing in the Texas State Championship tournament. Teams had to earn a bid to the tournament by either winning a tournament this year, or accumulating enough wins to earn the requisite number of points. The LHS team qualified by winning the "Alamo City" tournament in San Antonio back in October.

The LHS team finished the year with a 15th place finish in the state. Their final record on the year is 29-30 which is the highest number of wins in school history. Congratulations on a strong season!
