Celebrate Boston! Quiz Night at 
Old South Meeting House May 3rd

The Old South Meeting House is hosting a Quiz Night to Celebrate Boston! and this year's theme is "A Downtown Shaped By Newcomers." This event is Wednesday, May 3rd from 6 to 7:30 pm

There will be a lively reception with food from local downtown businesses and participants get to act as quiz contestants with the chance to win fun prizes. 
Author and historian Susan Wilson will be the quiz master providing questions that just may stump everyone.

Transatlantic Sessions Performing at Orpheum Theatre May 3rd

Transatlantic Sessions is performing live at the Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:30 pm. Click here for tickets. 

Transatlantic Sessions is the collective title for a series of musical productions by Glasgow-based Pelicula Films. Performers for the Orpheum show include Jerry Douglas & Aly Bain featuring special guests Rosanne Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Karen Matheson, The Milk Carton Kids, Aoife O'Donovan, Declan O'Rourke and John Paul White.
Boston Ballet's 'Robbins/The Concert' Opens at Boston Opera House May 5th

The Boston Ballet's latest show "Robbins/The Concert" opens at the Boston Opera House on Friday, May 5th

"Experience the perfect unity of dance and music in this program of works by Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, and Jorma Elo," says the Boston Ballet's website. The music of Frédéric Chopin, Igor Stravinsky and J.S. Bach is featured.

'Niko and His Magical Earmuffs' Book Launch Party at Central Bistro May 5th 

Central Bistro (34 Summer St., 2nd Floor) is hosting a book launch party for "Niko and His Magical Earmuffs" on Friday, May 5th. The book is co-authored by Central Bistro owner Danielle DiGiorgio

Steven Formaro is also a co-author, and David Gnass is the illustrator of the book. This event is from 6 to 9 pm. Click here for tickets. 
 
Suffolk University Theatre Department Presents 'Voices for Now '17' at 
Modern Theatre May 7th

The Suffolk University Theatre Department is presenting " Voices for Now ' 17" on Friday, May 5th The show is a revue of songs written by some of the most important young musical  theater writers of our day. 

The performance was conceived and directed by Suffolk University Theatre Department Chair Dr. Marilyn Plotkins, with m usical direction by Scott Nicholas. This show is at the Modern Theatre at 8 pm and free Reservations are encouraged by clicking here .

FabCafe Boston Launches May 5th

The first FabCafe (121 Devonshire St., inside Render Coffee) in North America is coming to Downtown Boston and hosting a launch party on Friday, May 5th. FabCafe is a global organization that aims to create sustainable spaces where people can connect, learn and collaborate over a cup of coffee, a 3D printer and more.

FabCafe is powered by CIC Boston, Fab Foundation and Render Coffee.  The launch party will feature demonstrations from robotics engineers, 3D printing experts, local artists and others. 
 
This is a free event that is open to the public from 5 to 8:30 pm. Click here to learn more and RSVP.
'From Firehouse to Art Center: 
ZUMIX, East Boston' at 
Old South Meeting House May 5th

The Old South Meeting House is hosting "From Firehouse to Art Center: ZUMIX, East Boston" on Friday, May 5th

The Engine Company 40 Firehouse in East Boston's Jeffries Point neighborhood operated from 1924-1977, after which it stood vacant for almost 30 years. In 2005, the local youth organization ZUMIX was chosen to redevelop the building. Now the firehouse is an inspiring cultural and performance space for participants in ZUMIX programs and the East Boston community. ZUMIX Executive Director Madeleine Steczynski will discuss how the nonprofit transformed the firehouse into a Gold LEED-certified youth development center with award-winning programs, featuring a state-of-the-art recording studio, radio station and gorgeous performance hall.

This event is free for OSMH members and $6 for nonmembers. This event is from 12:15 to 1 pm. 
 
Boston Ballet's 'The Sleeping Beauty' at Boston Opera House  Thru May 27th

The Boston Ballet's "The Sleeping Beauty" is at the Boston Opera House through Saturday, May 27th

The ballet is the classic tale of a princess who is stuck in a century-long slumber and she can only be awoken by her true love's kiss.

Bands and  Singers Strolling Streets

The Downtown Boston BID's spring entertainment season kicked off May 1st throughout the Downtown Crossing area.
 
The Downtown Boston Dixieland Band is strolling through the area on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays twice
 daily from noon to 2 pm and again  4:30 to 6:30 pm

The Downtown Boston Singers, a quartet singing group, is strolling through the area performing on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 2 pm and 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
'Aviary' Exhibit at 
Lafayette City Center Passageway 

The free art exhibit, "Aviary," is at the Lafayette City Center Passageway and compels passersby to stop, look at the imagery, and not just fly through the hallway.  

The  Lafayette City Center Passageway connects Avenue de Lafayette to Macy's and is  open daily to the public from 10 am to 6 pm .

The exhibit is part of the ongoing photography series at the Passageway by the Griffin Museum of Photography. This exhibit is supported by the Abbey Group, Lafayette City Center and the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District 
Freedom Trail Foundation Tour Schedule Expands for Spring Season

The Freedom Trail Foundation's 18th-century costumed guides will be out on the trail in full force this spring, offering more opportunities to bring history to life.  

Walk Into History Tours are daily at 11 am, noon, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm, leaving from the Boston Common Visitor Information Center. Tours also depart from the ArtsBoston Booth at Faneuil Hall including Walk Into History Tours daily at 10:30 am, and North End Tours daily at 1:30 pm. 

Walk Into History T ours are 90-minute walking tours featuring tales of high treason, mob agitations, revolutionary actions, and partisan fights, walking to 11 of Boston's historic Freedom Trail sites to and from Boston Common and Faneuil Hall.

Freedom Trail Foundation walking tours are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors/students, and $8 for children. Tickets may be purchased at the Visitor Information Center on Boston Common, other area locations and online by clicking here.

BID Ambassadors Provide Clean & Hospitality Services  in Downtown 

The  Downtown Boston BID Ambassadors provide clean and hospitality services seven days a week, nearly 24 hours a day. Ambassadors create a friendly, welcoming Downtown presence by helping visitors with directions, notifying fire and police personnel of incidents and more.

Love Your Block Volunteers 
Clean Up Downtown Boston 

Downtown Boston businesses spruced up the area on Friday during the city's annual Love Your Block neighborhood cleanup. 
"This is our home, our community and we're residents of this area even if it's just during the work day," said Ruth Silman, managing partner of Nixon Peabody LLP's Boston office. "We're very committed to sustainability in general and making sure we do our part."

"We wanted to participate in Love Your Block because we like to have an active role in the community and want to keep our neighborhood clean and welcoming," said Zein Farradj, account coordinator for marlo marketing.

Everyone who participated was volunteering their time and performed tasks, including cleaning up tree wells, planting flowers, installing cigarette ash urns and more. The following businesses participated in Love Your Block: Boston Planning & Development Agency, marlo marketing, The Merchant, Nixon Peabody LLP, Hyatt Regency Boston, The Ritz-Carlton, Boston and residents 
Spring Sprung! Locations of 
Outdoor Seating to Enjoy the Day

Whether you want to eat lunch outside of the office on a sunny day, or need to rest your feet after shopping -- you've got several options to sit down at tables and chairs. 

The BID has public seating with tables, chairs and umbrellas at several locations: on Washington Street in front of Liberty Travel; on  Summer Street from Hawley Street to Washington Street; by  The Steps on Franklin Street at Millennium Tower; and  Walgreens Plaza on Washington Street.

Numerous businesses also offer outdoor seating to customers. Caffè Nero has outdoor seating at two locations: 560 Washington St. and 10 Summer St. Legal Crossing (558 Washington St.), Sebastian's Cafe (100 Summer St.), Sip Wine Bar and Kitchen (581 Washington St.), Ruth's Chris Steak House (45 School St.) and PAUL Restaurant & Bakery (201 Washington St.) also offer outdoor seating during warm weather.
Are Turkeys Theater Fans? Gobbler Sighting in Downtown Boston

The usual wildlife seen in Downtown Boston includes squirrels, pigeons and seagulls, but recently at least one turkey has been seen in the area.

turkey was spotted on Washington Street across from the Boston Opera House on April 24th, and then again on April 27th by Tremont Street on the Boston Common.

Mayor Walsh's Neighborhood 
Coffee Hour in Chinatown May 4th

Mayor Martin Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the 18th Annual Neighborhood Coffee Hour Series in local parks citywide. The Downtown Boston neighborhood coffee hour will take place in Tai Tung Park (110 Tyler St.) in Chinatown on Thursday, May 4th from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

"Coffee Hours give me another opportunity to meet with residents, answer their questions and discuss all that the City of Boston has to offer," said Walsh. "Our parks provide a great backdrop for conversation and I look forward to hearing from more of my constituents throughout the spring and summer."

Free coffee and breakfast treats will be provided by Dunkin' Donuts and fresh fruit from Whole Foods Market. Each family in attendance may receive a flowering plant grown in the city's greenhouses. Info will be available on City programs from the Boston Public Library, Boston Public Schools, Boston Police Department, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families. Community Meeting About Re-Imagining Phillips Square May 4th

The Boston Planning & Development Agency is hosting a community meeting to discuss the re-imagining of Phillips Square on Thursday, May 4th at 6:30 pm. Phillips Square is as the area of Harrison Avenue between Beach Street and Essex Street. 

The goal is to turn the location into a neighborhood-friendly space. The BPDA would like to the community's ideas and comments on design options. The plan is to install designs this year, as well as create a long-term plan. This meeting is open to the public to attend.

Residents'  Association Meeting May 8th

The Downtown Boston Residents' Association will hold its next meeting on Monday, May 8th at 7 pm at the Modern Theatre. This meeting is open to the public. 
 
State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz will speak about his legislative agenda and take questions. BID President & CEO Rosemarie Sansone will speak. Representatives from The Genesis Foundation for Children will also speak about the organization.

The Arts Market Associate will provide support to BID staff and manage the two-day-a-week Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 6:30 pm. The position reports to the Project Manager and the Chief Financial Officer.

St. Anthony Shrine & Ministry Center Brown Bag Lunch Retreat for Grieving Parents 
May 11th

St. Anthony Shrine's Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents will offer a Brown Bag Lunch Retreat on Thursday, May 11th. Fr. Tom Hartle will present his message of comfort, "Death is only the first day of the week...it is a doorway, not a curse."

All grieving parents whose children of any age have died by any cause, no matter how long ago, are welcome.

Irish International Immigrant Center Offers ESOL/Citizenship Classes

The Irish International Immigrant Center (One State St., 8th Floor) offers ESOL/Citizenship Classes throughout the year. 

The classes are 10 weeks long and is open to all lawful permanent residents with any level of English proficiency. The course will help improve English skills, and will also provide assistance regarding the N-400 application and interview. The class will prepare individuals for the Naturalization Exam.

BID Little Free Library at 
Walgreens Plaza

The Downtown Boston BID's Little Free Library debuted recently outside of Walgreens on Washington Street and is already very popular. Readers are welcome to take a book, and encouraged to leave a book. People are also welcome to donate books by leaving them at the library or contacting Kristen Flanagan at kflanagan@bostonbid.org to organize a pickup in the downtown area.

The BID's Little Free Library is officially registered with the Little Free Library non-profit organization. There are actually more than 50,000 registered little free libraries across the country and world!
 
The BID's Little Free Library is open 10 am to 6 pm daily (closed during inclement weather). 
Vendors Wanted for 2017 
Downtown Boston  Arts & Crafts Market

The Downtown Boston BID is expanding the Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market program for 2017, and is seeking vendors to sell their products. The market will be at Readers Park by the Irish Famine Memorial at the corner of Washington and School streets. The market will operate on Wednesdays and Fridays from May 17th through September 29th. 

All artwork, crafts and food offerings must be original and handmade by you or your studio or enterprise. No mass-produced goods are allowed.

The Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market accepts arts and crafts in the following categories: fiber arts, fine art (painting, photography, sculpture), Christmas ornaments and holiday items, Judaica, blown glass, stained glass, clay/ceramics, metal, wood furniture, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, pet items, jewelry, artisan foods, personal products (soap and fragrances), home decor and more.
