Ohio State and University of Michigan Unite to Hike in Beijing Mountains
In late March, the Beijing Buckeye Alumni Association went on a 4km hike with a group of University of Michigan alumni in the mountains located on the outskirts of Beijing. Two teams cherished a remarkably amicable journey together. Beijing Club President Tony Feng said, "This event rewrote history and maybe we can consider planning events with that state up north again. They ain't so bad!"

Spring is a good season for outdoor activities and new initiatives. TheBeijing Buckeye Alumni Association held its official launch ceremony on April 22 with key alumni and Phoebe You, director of the China Gateway, delivering opening remarks. The newly elected advisory board and the board of governors all were present for this special occasion.

The Shanghai Alumni Association was founded in August 2016 and the board members have been actively engaging in event planning and resource sharing. So far Shanghai has organized a group trip to the Shanghai Museum and led a networking event with the alumni association of Pennsylvania State University.

The Alumni Club of Hong Kong has had a long-standing relationship with the China Gateway and organized a Buckeye mix-and-mingle Chinese dinner in early April.

This year the China Gateway has served as a liaison for all Buckeye alumni clubs. The office acts as a resource hub to provide guidance on how Ohio State alumni can best promote Ohio State through the Chinese alumni network.
Recruiting Top Students in Shanghai, Jinan and Suzhou
In support of the undergraduate recruitment efforts, the China Gateway staff and alumni traveled to Shanghai, Jinan and Suzhou to present Ohio State to interested students and their parents.

Representatives participated in the college fairs at Concordia International School Shanghai, Shanghai United International School Gubei Campus, and Suzhou Singapore International School.
The president of the Beijing Alumni Club, Tony Feng, represented Ohio State at the Jinan Foreign Language School Spring Fair in Shandong Province and attracted more than 100 students and parents to attend.

China Gateway Co-Hosts Career Open Day with AUCA
After the success of hosting a well-attended career fair last August, the Ohio State China Gateway collaborated with seven American universities to coordinate a Career Open Day with a focus on the business and finance fields.

The Career Open Day was held in Shanghai on January 6 and attracted around 30 top firms and 300 Chinese young professionals. Companies in attendance included PwC, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Citibank, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, DBS Bank and Bloomberg.
Prior to the career fair, guest speakers from Standard Chartered, JD Finance and Bloomberg shared the benefits of educational experiences abroad and insights on the financial market in China. Phoebe You, director of the China Gateway, discussed the role of the China Gateway and how it supports bridging the gap between job-seekers and talent acquisition.
Both current students and alumni voiced their appreciation for the event and the chance to meet people in the industry.
"I will be graduating in May, and this event is extremely helpful for me to prepare for the job market in China. I really hope that in the future I will be able to hear more from the guest speaker and see more HRs," said Eric Yu, a recent graduate from Ohio State.
The corporations were also gratetful for the opportunity to be introduced to students and company representatives .
Buckeye Parents Gather at China Gateway
In celebration of the Year of the Rooster, the China Gateway organized a year-end event for Chinese parents to gather and exchange ideas in the office of scarlet, gray, and China red.
"We appreciate your continuous support and we hope to provide better services to your children's education at Ohio State in the USA," said Phoebe You, director of the China Gateway.
Jianbo Guo, the parent of a third-year transfer student majoring in architecture, said, "If we would have known about the China Gateway earlier, we wouldn't have struggled with choosing a university at all!"
Ming Zhou, the parent of a second-year student majoring in mathematics, praised Ohio State: "The RPAC greatly changed my son's lifestyle. He is more willing to work out now. We are so pleased with his change."
This event created an open space for parents to communicate with each other and the China Gateway staff. Most parents said their students were having a great experience at Ohio State, and they benefited greatly from the pre-departure orientation (PDO) hosted by the university. Some indicated it was helpful to have information in advance about maintaining immigration status, searching for jobs and transferring majors.
When it comes to education, parents' voices matter in a student's choice of college and career development. Attendees expressed their gratitude for the event and were interested in attending similar events in the future.
This event was created to reflect the China Gateway's New Year's resolution: to continue providing support for Chinese parents and their students at Ohio State.
