Holding five open houses during the month of April, Clermont County celebrated National County Government Month by explaining the mission and services of many of the county's departments, offices, courts and agencies. Citizens met with the Commissioners; toured the Bob McEwen Water Treatment Plant; toured the Sheriff's Office, including the crime lab; and got a better understanding of all aspects of our judicial system at Common Pleas Court.
Our last open houses featured presentations from the division heads of Job and Family Services, the Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Mental Health & Recovery Board, and Public Health.

Clermont County Mental Health & Recovery Board (MHRB) will fund "mini-grants" again for the upcoming year. The Board is looking for innovative projects that will positively affect mental health and/or prevent substance abuse for any age group. The maximum funding per project is $4,000. Any organized group in Clermont County -- with the exception of the contract agencies of MHRB -- can apply for funding. Read more here.

Fun with Flowers! Girl Scout Program (6-7 p.m., Sycamore Park). Learn about our local beauties during a wildflower hike. Then, decorate a pot and plant a native wildflower to take home. Programs are $4 per person. Email Alyssa Rooks at

 Saturday, May 13:
Matt Maupin Memorial Fishing Derby (11 a.m.-1 p.m., Pattison Park -- lake side). Join the East Fork Bass Anglers and Clermont County Park District for a kids (ages 15 and under) fishing derby. Prizes. Bring your own equipment and bait. Registration starts at 10 a.m.
Sunday, May 21:
Wildflower Walk (10-11 a.m., Sycamore Park). Join park naturalists as we keep an eye out for emerging spring wildflowers. Free and open to the public.
And, don't forget the Park District's Summer Day Camps (photo from last year). The days are full of outdoor adventure, hands-on activities, storytelling, active games, a craft project and more.

Clermont County Job & Family Services and its partner Easterseals are looking for youth and employers to participate in the 2017 Summer Youth Employment Initiative. In 2016, 127 youth and 48 employers participated in the program in Clermont County.
There is no cost to employers -- Easterseals is the employer of record and responsible for payroll and administration.
Youth must be 14-18 years old and meet certain household income requirements. If you are interested in working this summer, and earning $10 an hour, contact JFS Director J

One hundred twenty civil warrants were withdrawn against noncustodial parents during the #MarchAmnesty campaign held by the Clermont County Division of Child Support Enforcement, making it a big success, according to Deputy Director Brenda Gilreath. "We set a goal of 50 parents coming in to address their situation," Gilreath said. "So we are pleased that many more parents than that decided to get back on track." Read more here.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER: Clermont County Commissioners invite the public to celebrate the National Day of Prayer on the steps of the Clermont County Common Pleas Courthouse on Thursday, May 4. The Courthouse is located at 270 E. Main St., Batavia. Read more here.
SHRED DAY: The Clermont County Records Center and Shred-It will sponsor a FREE Shred Day from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 6, at the DJFS parking lot, 2400 Clermont Center Drive. Witness the secure disposal of your personal documents via the Shred-It Mobile Shredding Truck
READY, SET, RUN: The East Side Adventure Challenge will return to Batavia Township on Saturday, May 13, at 8 a.m. at the Batavia Township Community Center, 535 Clough Pike. The event, in its second year, is a combination obstacle course and run/walk. Read more here.
BEE ISSUES? Honeybees tend to swarm around the month of May. A swarm of bees can often be easily moved. If the queen bee can be collected, most of the other bees will follow her into a new hive. Clermont OSU Extension Educator Gigi Neal maintains a swarm list, which is organized by county, to help homeowners. You can find the list here.  CRANE EXPERTS: Recently, four employees of the county's Water Resources Department were trained in crane operations to comply with a new regulation from the Public Employers Risk Reduction Program (photo, right). They went through classes, and were tested with both a written exam and practical exam. All four passed with flying colors! Congratulations to Brad Bates, Jason Suffridge, Mike Haynes, and Gary Stroup .
OVI GRADUATION: The Clermont County Municipal OVI Court Specialized Docket held its 25th graduation ceremony on April 7. The event, presided over by OVI Court Judge Kevin T. Miles, featured seven participants who successfully completed the program. The OVI Court Specialized Docket works to rehabilitate high-risk multiple OVI offenders through a combination of intensive community control supervision, frequent judicial monitoring, and specialized substance abuse treatment at the Clermont Recovery Center.
