Greetings!
Pictured below: The lyrics to "Banu Choshech L’Garesh"
My favorite Israeli Hanukah song is “Banu Hoshech L’Garesh,” which translated means, “We came to drive away the darkness.” At this dark, cold time of year, I’m always reaffirmed by this message.

On last Friday and Monday of this week, we had a delegation from Kfar Saba visit CJDS as part of the Educational Bridge program. Columbus’ sister-city in Israel is Kfar Saba, and each Jewish educational institution in Columbus has an Israeli program with whom they collaborate and connect. CJDS has two sister-schools – the Brenner School and Gan Yedidut (Friendship Kindergarten). We exchange letters and videos, have Skype parties and send each other gifts for birthdays and holidays. The seven educator representatives spent 5 days in Columbus learning about our city, our schools and our Jewish community. We had the privilege of taking the teachers on a tour of our school, providing them with opportunities to talk about and reflect on similarities and differences between our schools, and they even participated in our Kabbalat Hanukah Celebration.
Our visitors took pictures of every inch of our school. They were blown away by the quality of our artwork, the amount of Hebrew on the walls, the ways that we address the whole child through our program, and much more. In our reflection conversation, they simply could not stop gushing about the wonderful work they saw us doing with our students. Seeing the school through their eyes filled me with energy and light.
Pictured below: Our Kfar Saba teacher partner, Hila Belinky had a chance to work with CJDS Kindergarten and first grade students using light to connect her teaching to H anukkah.
Pictured below: Kfar Saba teachers admire our Brenner School-CJDS connection wall. The area highlights student life in both schools School. The board is constantly changing and this week, student H anukkah art from both schools is proudly displayed.
In the winter, it is easy to let the darkness, the negativity, and the problems overwhelm us. We crawl towards vacation just trying to get to that finish line. But we can drive away the darkness. We have in our hands fire and light. Today, I invite you to let the light shine on all that is good, positive and successful. We have a lot to celebrate at CJDS.
We wish you a wonderful, restful and restorative vacation.

Todah rabah and Yasher Koach to CJDS parents Cantor Bat-Ami Moses, Chad Silverstein, Monica Silverstein and Rachel Cohen for serving as brave contestants on "Kol Ha Emet" (The Whole Truth), a Hanukkah Game Show, hosted by Eran Rosenberg.
Pictured below: CJDS leadership had the privilege of visiting Cincinnati's community Jewish day school, Rockwern Academy, this week. The tour and in depth meetings with our counterparts there were incredibly valuable. We continue to learn a great deal from each other and our collaboration is ongoing. Pictured below: Last week, 5th and 6th grade culminated their unit on "Poverty and Homelessness" by visiting Star House . CJDS students grew, harvested and prepared a salad, made cookies and brownies, and donated clothing. More importantly, they learned that homelessness doesn't have an identifiable look, and that they can celebrate the blessings in their own lives by helping others.
Pictured below: The CJDS Great Dreidel SPIN OFF! Representatives from each grade participated in the spinoff. Participants went home with commemorative dreidels. The winner, CJDS 3rd grader, Dovi, received a giant light up dreidel!

Pictured below: Our 5th and 6th graders visited Wexner Heritage Residents this week for an inter-generational Hanukkah celebration. They sang songs, played games, and enjoyed being together. Our friends at Wexner Heritage Village bring such light to our lives!

Pictured below: The CJDS kindergarten harvested crops from the winter garden this week. They also spent time feeding the birds, and observing them at their feeding stations. Each year, our students use eBird to support scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology by documenting migratory movements of bird populations around the CJDS campus and throughout the Western Hemisphere. You can see a video of the migration patterns charted here.
INSPIRED INTEGRATION: TOWER GARDEN AEROPONICS!
Pictured below: The CJDS Tower Garden is up and running! Next time you are in the building, be sure to stop in classroom 102-A to see the CJDS Tower Garden LIVE and in action. The Tower garden is teaching students about aeroponics—the same technology NASA uses—Tower Gardening grows plants with only water and nutrients, rather than dirt. Research has found aeroponic systems to grow plants on average three times faster and produce 30% greater yields. CJDS s tudents are constantly connecting the dots between nutrition, community service learning, environmental education and science. You can read more about these connections in the September 15 Edition of our Ma Koreh here.

TZEDAKAH UPDATE
Winter coat collection update!
Thank you to all of the families who donated coats for KIPP Columbus.

We are still collecting, so de-clutter and bring in your children and adults' coats after break!
The collection of Personal Care and Beauty product waste along with Oral Hygiene product waste continues to be an important Tzedakah Club initiative at CJDS!

We are encouraging our school community to NOT throw away any of these items! Please send them in with your student or drop them off at CJDS! These readily and often used items are collected and sent to TerraCycle by Tzedakah Club.  TerraCycle reuses, recycles, or upcycles these items. Additionally, TerraCycle "pays" us per item and the money "earned" gives us the opportunity to make a difference in the world! The money CJDS collects is then donated by Tzedakah Club to non-profit organizations that help our planet and its people in countless ways!

We look forward to updating you in the future with news of how much we have collected and to which non-profit organizations we have made contributions!!

A note from Steve Shkolnik:

Greetings!

I want to thank all of the Parents and Grandparents for their hard work and caring to make each lunch special.

The past 4 months have been going extremely well, and to keep it up...

It is now time to sign up for the next several months. Our students love to see their parents and grandparents at lunch time. We always need your help. Roast chicken Friday is the most popular day, but every day is a hot lunch day!

If you have any comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email Steve@LGRREALTY.com or (614) 530-0015.

The students and faculty really appreciate all the time and care you have given.

My best to everyone for a safe and healthy vacation!

Warm regards,
Steve
