Rocket Review Monthly Newsletter 2017

From The Principal's Desk
Mrs. Julia Wackt

We are in the home stretch! I cannot believe that we are in MAY already!   Where did the year go?! As I prepare to wrap up the 2016-2017 school year, I cannot help but think of what an amazing year it has been. This is truly one of the greatest experiences and honors of my professional career to be able to be part of LLS.

I have had the joy of seeing every child grow spiritually, academically and physically. I have seen the faculty and staff blossom and grow both spiritually and professionally, I have met so many wonderful people, whether it is the families or congregation members. I have experienced the love and support of both St. Peter's and Immanuel congregations. Lebanon Lutheran School has been welcoming and a blessing in my life. I cannot wait to see what next year holds, but as we finish up this year take time to talk to your child throughout May about this past school year.

Ask them what they loved about this school year. Ask them what brought them joy. Ask them where they can improve next year but most of all celebrate with them all the achievements of the 2016-2017 school year.

Dance & Band Programs
Getting Ready For Some Changes

As LLS prepares for next year, we are getting ready for some changes. The 2nd graders are moving from the St. Peter's Campus to the Immanuel Campus. The 8th graders are moving on to high school. The students are growing in height and in their faith.

One change that will be happening is the exit of the dance program at LLS for the 2017-2018 school year. Dance has been a wonderful program that was started by Mrs. Renee Ebert. The dance program is a high-energy program that requires a lot of time and dedication. But we are blessed to have such a wonderful community that offers other dance programs to our students. Below is the websites for Blue Revue and and Hustisford dance program ran by Ms. Heidi Anderson. If your child is still interested in dancing, please consider these programs or others offered throughout the community.

Another exciting change for the 2017-2018 school year is the addition of a band program for students in grades 5-8. Michelle Kuehl will be running an after school band program through LLS. Mrs. Kuehl has a degree in Instrumental Music Education along with certifications in Choral Music and General Music. She taught for many years within a local school district and currently does private lessons.

Michelle will provide a half hour lesson at the cost of $15. The parents will be in charge of purchasing or renting the instrument and materials (music) that are necessary for the student to take band lessons. The lessons will take place in the music room located within the Immanuel gym facility. All lessons will be after school on Thursday. The students must continue to have good grades (same policy as sports) to participate in band. Band will begin September 7th. Your child must be registered no later than June 1st. Please fill out the slip below and return it to the school office no later than June 1st. Below is a list of instruments that your child can choose from that Ms. Kuehl offers.

It is very important that all children attend school and avoid absences, if possible, during this week of testing.  It is very difficult for teachers to do make up tests when children are absent.

Eat a good breakfast and get plenty of rest this week as well.

GOTR
Girls On The Run

The 2017 Spring Season of Girls on the Run is up and running! This international, award-winning after school program inspires girls to  be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Ms. Witan and I have a group of fifteen energetic girls, eight from Lebanon Lutheran, four from our neighbor, Lebanon Public, two from St. Paul's Oconomowoc, and one from Good Shepherd. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school leading up to our grand finale on Thursday, May 25th. That is when all 100 girls from the Watertown GOTR Council will come together to run a 5K.  Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological, and physical skills and   abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program. The curriculum   includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.

The vision of Girls on the Run is  a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

When you drive by Immanuel and the gym Tuesday or Thursday afternoons, make sure you beep your horn for encouragement!

7th & 8th Grade News
Mrs. Jenny Meyers
It's amazing how fast this school year has flown by! It makes me a bit anxious as we still have a lot of material to cover. However whenever I suggest extending the school year, the 7th and 8th graders just roll their eyes and start a persuasive argument as to why this is a terrible idea (smile). With that being said, here's what the 7th and 8th graders are currently studying in ELA and math.

Our main focus in ELA this quarter is reading. As you know, each student has a reading requirement of 30 books for the school year. Most of the class is about 4-5 books away from achieving this impressive goal. Besides their 30 book requirement, the students are also reading a classroom novel called Percy Jackson Lightning Thief AND a shortened version of Homer's The Odyssey . Meanwhile in writing, the students will begin reviewing how to write a persuasive paragraph.

Math continues to challenge the students. The second half of their textbook begins to apply basic math skills to more complex and advanced problem solving questions. Some of these math topics include: probability, geometry, graphing, and irrational numbers.

Finally, I'd like to thank all the parents, students and church members for all the support shown to the Lebanon Lutheran school staff. You are all such wonderful people who make this school an extraordinary place to work and learn!

Blessings to you all,
Mrs. Meyers

3rd & 4th Grade News
Mrs. Jennie Berken

How do I know the end of the year is around the corner?  The weather is warmer and the students are squirmier than ever.  God has blessed us with beautiful weather, so we plan to enjoy it more each and every day.

The 3rd and 4th graders finished working on an acrostic poem about honor and obey.  They typed them up on their chromebooks and we reviewed how to share them.  Once they shared, I taught them how to respond on Google Docs, and they thought this was pretty cool.

As the month of May approaches, we will be focusing on reviewing all the reading skills and strategies, as well as reading another trade book and more informational text.  We will also be focusing more on adding details into our writing to catch the readers attention.

Blessings,
Mrs. Berken

1st & 2nd Grade News
Mrs. Kathy Fortlage

Spring in First and Second Grade!

The children in first and second grade have been enjoying the beautiful spring weather we have been having! The children have been practicing "spring" outdoor activities such as jump roping, skipping with a skip-it, jumping with hopscotch, and playing baseball and kicker! While these are recess activities, these are all activities where the children need to work on being good sports and working together as a team! We also celebrated spring by having some sherbet in the courtyard! (Thanks to Ruby's Pantry!)

Holy Week and Easter have been our focus in religion this month. We studied the parts of the Holy Week story - from Palm Sunday where the disciples found a donkey for Jesus to ride, to Easter Sunday when Mary Magdalen asks the "Gardener" where he has put Jesus. (It was Jesus!) As we sing in "It's About the Cross," the children were confident that because Jesus died and rose again on Easter, we will have eternal life with Him in heaven. Alleluia! Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! Alleluia!

As we near the end of school, we have started a new writing unit which looks at what authors do as they write. We have read several books about authors and looked at various types of books. Now the children are working on their own "book." We will work on editing skills, revising and finally making a final draft. Watch for some great stories to come home!

Kindergarten News

Kindergarten Happenings in April . .. .

April is almost gone and May is just around the corner! We have been learning about Holy week and Jesus' final days before the cross. The kindergarten are learning about addition and subtraction facts. We have been working with the greater than and less than "monsters" that eat the larger numbers. We love playing war with each other and using the "monster" deck of cards. We are doing excellent with our spelling tests each week.

In Art, with the first and second graders, we've enjoyed our first attempt at weaving by making a checkerboard cows. We also painted with glue and tissue paper and made silhouettes of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.

We have started our Z to A countdown to summer. Only 26 more days of school until we are ready to move on to first grade! We started with Z and had Zebra Day this past Monday! We learned about zebras. We will have Yellow and Yo-yo Day. We will try to learn how to use a yo-yo! X Day will be our eXperiment Day and we will be mad scientists on Wednesday. We will do many fun and special days for each letter of the alphabet!

We are looking forward to our Graduation Day - note the date change due to the Ascension Day services. We will have graduation on May 24th, 6:00 for PK4 and 6:30 for the Kindergartners. We will have refreshments to celebrate our accomplishments in the Fellowship Hall after the services on Wednesday night.

Rejoice in the Lord - He has risen!  Alleluia!

Music Notes
Mrs. Kathy Fortlage

Preparations are underway for our spring music program, "All You Need is Love" on Friday, May 12 at 10:00 am and 7 pm in the Immanuel gym. All classes are learning songs by the Beatles and songs about God's great love for us. 3-4 will be playing on recorders and 5-8 will be on bucket drums! Be sure to mark your calendars for this exciting concert with Beatlemania and songs about God's love! See you then!

K-8 will need black pants/shoes to wear with the t-shirts we are ordering for this year's program!!! (No shorts/skirts please!!)  Please check your child's wardrobe now to avoid last minute challenges!
K-2 has been working on steady beat in our song for the spring program. Grades 3 and 4 have been learning
new notes on our recorders as well as remembering that notes have different values and to count while playing.  A very tricky concept!  Grades 5-8 are working hard on counting beats and rhythms as well as they prepare for the program. They have found out that playing drums requires intense concentration!

Additional Singing Date! K-7 will be singing for 8th graduation on Tuesday, May 30 at 6:30 pm at Immanuel Church. It was inadvertently left off the music schedule.

Spanish
Miss Anna Witan

The weather is finally nice and warm! All the Spanish classes are excited about getting outside and playing outdoor games in Spanish.
The 7th/8th graders are more than halfway through their Spanish chapter book. Translating is difficult, but they're giving it their best shot. The 5th/6th graders are also more than halfway through their Spanish chapter book. The scenario of a boy trying to find a way to hide and keep his perro makes us laugh.
The 3rd/4th graders' excitement is mounting as we come to the end of our Spanish video series on the edge of our seats to figure out how our virtual trip to Spain will end. Some of the Spanish vocabulary we've covered recently includes medical and rental phrases and clothing and household appliances.
The 1st/2nd graders are applying their new verbs and vocabulary to translation, including simple sentences and fill-in-the-blank stories. The Kindergarten learners mastered family vocabulary and are moving on to "tengo" (I have) and some simple food words before we review for year's end.
I'm very pleased with how this year is wrapping up and so proud of the students who are putting in their best effort.
