DEBBIE HOFFMANN TO RECEIVE HANNAH G. SOLOMON AWARD
The Hannah G. Solomon Award is the National Council of Jewish Women's highest honor. This award is given to an individual who has enriched the community with leadership and continued action toward improving the quality of life for women, children and families, the aged and disadvantaged, and has motivated others to fight for progress and change.
NCJW/Cleveland is thrilled to be giving the Hannah G. Solomon Award to Debbie Hoffmann, to be presented at our 123rd Annual Meeting at Beechmont Country Club. We hope you will join us as we honor Debbie for her dedication and commitment to others.

The NCJW Book Group meets the first Thursday of each month, September - June. Led by moderator Amy Rosenfield, the discussion is open only to NCJW members. There is no fee to participate; however, we collect an optional ($5 suggested) donation per session for our moderator.

Dr. Varyani will present on gynecological health innovations and surgery. Dr. Sila will relate her work on stroke prevention and stroke-related cardiac disease. John Selick will provide a light repast as he explains Ahuja'a role in wellness and nutrition. As Tom Huck guides us through Ahuja'a wonderful art collection, we will come to understand the benefits of creating or simply viewing art.

Have you signed up for NCJW/Cleveland's action alerts?
Every Wednesday, NCJW/Cleveland has begun disseminating weekly action steps that can be done do either at home or together in a group.
In the past six weeks, we have included scripts on who to call and what to say in order to:
-
oppose the repeal of the Affordable Care Act
- request an independent counsel investigate Russian interference in the election
- oppose the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court
- support extending state protection for victims of domestic violence
- preserve funding in the state budget to support those aging out of foster care.
We have also put out calls to action to help stock the Cleveland Heights Emergency Food Bank, after hearing about possible huge federal slashes to Meals on Wheels.
Our members have made hundreds of phone calls to members of congress as a result of these action alerts. As you know, there is power in numbers - -and we'd love you to join in on the action.

Open Table Informational Meeting: Not just a way to make dinner reservations
Last year, NCJW/Cleveland became the first Jewish organization in the country to pilot a group mentoring program called Open Table. The program paired 6-8 NCJW members with one young adult who had aged out of the foster care system, helping them develop connections, personal networks, and trust. Youth who age out of foster care often have no families, no support structures and few people to call on for support or guidance or help. The goal of Open Table was to connect our mentees to our own networks. As one of our mentees explained: "Open Table has brought a lot of love and support into my life that wasn't there before... They are like my fairy
Godmothers." Due to the success of last year's pilot program, NCJW
will
be hosting a few more tables this year and partnering with a church
to help
further break down cultural barriers. Mark your calendars. We will
be
hosting
an informational question and answer sessions on the model.

Preparing to Age in Jewish Cleveland - What's Out There & What's Needed
An informational session & resource fair to learn about existing resources and future plans that will help the aging baby boomers. Find out about programs & services that can help you, your aging parents, relatives and friends.

Jacob Cramer, Orange High School student, to speak about his project "Letters of Love";
Steve Raichilson will discuss current resources and what is being done to prepare for future needs;
Heather Greene, Licensed Independent Clinical Counselor and Certified Elder Care Coordinator, will help understand how to talk to aging parents;
Rachel Kabb-Effron, Certified Elder Law Attorney, will outline the important things to know for financial planning. A guide of resources will be available to all attendees.

We have started a new 4-week self-esteem session on April 19 at BeechBrook with an
expanded curriculum and we will be sponsoring Foster Awareness Month at Cuyahoga Community College.
We are planning a lunch and project on May 23 for the Sullivan Deckard scholars as they end the school year.

Have you wondered how grass roots organizing works? Do you want to meet people from across our county who are members of churches, synagogues and mosques who want to improve our city? Do you want to DO something that truly makes a difference?

On May 6, 10 members of our GCC/NCJW team are visiting and sharing a meal with members of the Turkish Mosque in Lakewood to further participate in our Muslim outreach learning experience. The visits to our meetings by members of various mosques and the discussions resulting from member research have resulted in lively group meetings the second Wednesday of each month. Please contact

A teen-run program that collects and provides new or gently used clothing, new backpacks and school supplies for school-aged children in need, 'Share What You Wear' meets throughout the year. Our teen volunteers collect, sort, set up, and volunteer on the day of the event. These items are distributed free at the back to school event on Wednesday, August 8, at The Tudor Arms Hotel.

Please consider volunteering for this short-term, interactive theater and literacy program for fourth grade students throughout the area. No theater experience necessary. We will train you! Groups meet once per week for three weeks, performing for their classmates at the final meeting. This is a "sometimes" project that can work well with a busy schedule. Smiles abound!

We are a group that does an after-school program at St. Aloysius School once a month.
