Five Runnels students were honored with top awards in this year's Holocaust Writing Contest sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge.

In the high school division, sophomore Carson Badinger placed first, sophomore Numair Khan, second, and Saylor Ourso, also a sophomore, third. In the middle school division, 8th grader Jacob Folse took first and Emma Schlotterer, also an 8th grader, was third.

The essays constituted a writing assignment in Colleen LeBlanc's 10th grade English classes and an extra credit option for students in Kylie Harbin's 8th-grade English classes. Congratulations to the winners and their teachers.

( Band students in grades 4 and 5 will compete on May 17.
Demystifying Science

First graders Jordan Bergeron, Ryan Funk and Jackson Phillips gear up to see the "Alka Seltzer Rocket" demonstration at the "Science Explorium."

A group of first graders crowded around the "Alka Seltzer Rocket" demonstration at the Runnels "Science Explorium" this Thursday in the Catalano Gym to watch lids pop up and fly off film canisters. The experiment, conducted by Harrison White, Reed Miller and Stuart Roark, demonstrates how rockets work. It was one of 29 hands-on science experiments presented by fifth and sixth graders designed to help younger students learn about basic STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts.

Fifth-grade science teacher John Baird, who organized the event, explained that the goal of the "Science Explorium" is for the older students to develop a lesson on some scientific concept and use a hands-on demonstration as part of a mini-lesson for the kindergarten through fourth grade students attending the event. The "emphasis," he said is on "learning by doing."

Our thanks go to Mr. Baird, sixth-grade science teacher Julie Fink and the many parents who helped with this event.

Navigating New Experiences

The American Studies field trip to Chicago included a stop at the famous Art Institute.
"Roaming Raiders" in the Swiss Alps visiting the Lion monument near Lucerne.

Travel -- both foreign and domestic -- was on the agenda for several of our high school students and teachers during spring break.  Some departed for Europe on the second annual "Roaming Raiders" high school trip, which introduced the travelers to points of interest in Italy, Switzerland and France. Another group headed to America's heartland for an architectural and cultural tour of Chicago in affiliation with the high school's American Studies course. We understand that both trips were amazing. Click here to read more about both trips

Our "Roaming Raiders" tour organizer, Assistant Principal Dana Schlotterer, still has openings available for next summer's junior and senior high school 10-day trip to Athens and the Greek Islands . For more information: [email protected]

Building a Better Catapult

Senior Adam Howe prepares to launch a projectile (beanbag) with the award-winning catapult he and classmates Nathan Fairley and Henry Forgey designed and constructed for an honors physics project.
With a launch of 197 feet and 6 inches, honors physics students Adam Howe, Nathan Fairley and Henry Forgey captured first place in this year's STEM Catapult Challenge held Thursday outside the Catalano Gym during the lunch activity period.

For the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) project, which was an assignment in all of Dr. Rebecca Ringuette's physics classes, students worked in teams to design and build a catapult capable of shooting a projectile (a beanbag) the furthest distance. Preliminary contests in each physics class determined which four catapults would face off in the ultimate STEM Catapult Challenge yesterday.

Adam, Nathan and Henry's winning design was hand built from wood, screws, PVC pipe, pulleys and six stretchy exercise bands. Nathan said that putting in so many exercise bands contributed to the success of the design: Their catapult launched the beanbag the farthest "because there was more tension in the bands that could convert potential energy to kinetic energy." Their entry also won the vote for "Best Appearance."

Earning second-place in the Catapult Challenge was the team of Joseph Armoney, Anthony Emiliani, Christian Martin and Isabel Booty with a launch of 160 feet and 11 inches, and finishing third with a distance of 119 feet and 2 inches was the Heath Moser, Ben Enete, and Abigail Scarton team. Congratulations to all! ( See photos in the Weekly Album.
