President's Message

Dear IISE Computer & Information Systems (CIS) Division members,

I hope that your academic year is coming to a successful end. It is my pleasure to have an opportunity to bring you all up to speed on the latest activities of the IISE CIS Division.

As you all know, the 2017 IISE Annual Conference & Expo will be held from May 20-23 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. If you are attending the conference, please mark your calendars for this year's CIS Division town hall meeting to take place on Sunday, May 21, from 2 p.m. -3:20 p.m. in Room 303 of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (be sure to check the conference schedule for last minute room changes). I strongly encourage you to attend the town hall meeting so that you can learn more about the current status and the activities the CIS Division conducted during the 2016-2017 academic year. We will also be announcing division awards for best papers and listening to presentations by the finalist teams of the 5th Mobile App Competition. Attending the town hall meeting gives you the opportunity to provide feedback to the CIS Board members about the activities we are conducting and suggest ideas for future activities we can take on. Finalists Selected for the 2017 ISERC CIS Mobile App Competition

The two finalist teams for the 5th annual mobile app competition have been selected. Students from Bradley University and State University of New York at Binghamton will be demonstrating their mobile apps to a panel of judges at the 2017 IISE Annual Conference to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania , support these teams!

May 20 - 23. Teams will also give a presentation about their respective projects at the CIS Division Town Hall meeting scheduled for Sunday, May 21st, at 2pm at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (Room 303). Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the CIS Division Town Hall meeting.
2017 CIS Division Spring Webinar

Prahalad Rao PH.D , an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was the
Prahalad Rao
featured speaker of the 2017 spring webinar hosted by the CIS Division. Rao surveyed various approaches used for monitoring build quality in additive manufacturing processes (AM, 3D Printing), including algorithms and sensing systems. Rao also summarized algorithmic approaches for spectral graph theoretic sensor fusion and image-based monitoring, and discussed case studies from his own research.

Rao's research focuses on sensor-based monitoring and diagnosis of complex bio-physical and manufacturing processes (e.g., additive manufacturing, ultraprecision machining, semiconductor planarization, and neurophysiology) and he was recently awarded an NSF grant (CMMI 1538059) in 2015 for applying graph theoretic techniques towards monitoring of neurophysiological anomalies. Prior to joining the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) at University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), he held the position of assistant professor (2014-2016), System Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE), Binghamton University. From 2013-2014, he was a post-doctoral research associate at Virginia Tech. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Oklahoma State University (OSU) in 2006 and 2013, respectively.

Rao is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).
2017 IISE CIS Track Best Student Paper Award

For the Student Best Paper Award, four judges performed a blind review of the entries and selected the best paper. Congratulations to Mohammed Aladeemy and Linda Adwan from the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Their paper entitled "A Mathematical Programming Approach for Relocation Planning of Data Centers" was co-authored by Dr. Mohammad Khasawneh, also from the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and Dr. Srikanth Poranki from UHS Hospitals.

The award winners will receive a certificate at the 2017 IISE Annual Conference and Expo, and will be recognized at the CIS Town Hall meeting, scheduled at 2PM on Sunday May 21, 2017, in Room 303.
2017 IISE CIS Track Best Paper Award

The CIS track received many excellent papers this year, and three judges used double-blind review and selected the best one. Our congratulations go to Cheng-Bang Chen, Hui Yang, and Soundar Kumara from Pennsylvania State University. Their paper, entitled "Pattern-Frequency Tree to identify Irregular Regions of Dynamic Transitions in the High-dimensional State Space," has been selected to receive the best paper award in the CIS track.

The award winners will receive a certificate at the 2017 IISE Annual Conference and Expo, and will be recognized at the CIS Town Hall meeting, scheduled at 2PM on Sunday, May 21, 2017, in Room 303.
Probabilistic Decision Analysis Models for Integrated Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management

Bimal Nepal, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Industrial Distribution, Texas A&M University
Bimal and his research team have been working on integrated decision analysis frameworks focusing on various issues related to product development, manufacturing, and supply chain management.

These frameworks cover a wide array of modeling and analysis techniques including stochastic optimization models, Bayesian analysis, simulation models and system level value stream mapping as described briefly in the following paragraphs.
