A Letter for Leaders in the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church

Good afternoon,

It's the most wonderful time of year, and our campus is buzzing with more than just Christmas lights. As we eagerly await the celebration of the birth of our Lord, we cordially invite you to take part in these special Virginia Wesleyan holiday traditions:

Holiday Tree Lighting
December 9, 5:00 p.m.
Behind Godwin Hall
Held each year on the last day of fall semester classes, this tradition honors the life of fallen alumnus Lt. Slator Clay Blackiston III '76, for whom the holiday tree is named. Join us for a very engaging sing-a-long of "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

Women's Christmas
January 6, 11:00 a.m.
Monumental Chapel
On this traditional date of Epiphany, 'Nollaig na mBan' ("Little Christmas") marks an Irish tradition which offers women a time apart from duties of hearth and home to celebrate and reflect on the New Year.
UMC UNIVERSITY SENATE VISIT
Virginia Wesleyan College was visited by the review committee from the University Senate of the United Methodist Church on November 16-18. The committee was comprised of three distinguished individuals in the Church: Dr. John Russell, Immediate Past President of McMurray University; Dr. Mark Hanshaw, Associate Dean, School of Arts and Letters at Texas Wesleyan University; and the Rev. Laura McMasters, College Chaplain at Martin Methodist College.  I would like to thank the many faculty, staff, students, alumni, and Board of Trustees members who were involved with the University Senate visit for their time and testimony. Our planning for the visit of the committee members for the University Senate resulted in a comprehensive internal assessment of our values, programs, and traditions as a Methodist institution. We look forward to the visiting team's forthcoming report in early 2017.
