BET SHALOM EVENTS

Bet Shalom Emeriti Group
Our next Bet Shalom Emeriti meeting will be  Wednesday, May 3 at 10:00 am . In concert with Israeli Independence Day... we will be discussing personal impressions of the state of Israel. We plan for several who have visited Israel in the past to provide insights from the experience. Also Rabbi Cohen will be back, leading our group in this interesting conversation.  We had a great session on March 22 with a special guest from Beacon - a non-profit that supports affordable housing and the homeless. Thanks to Steven Ziff for coordinating this.

Bet Shalom Blood Drive

Alzheimer's Support Group
A community  Alzheimer's support group meets the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at Bet Shalom. The group is for caregivers and loved ones of those dealing with  Alzheimer's or dementia. If you have questions please call Ron Kelner 612-868-7754.

Join JCA to Mobilize for Affordable Housing
Join JCA and Adath Jeshurun Congregation on May 17, 7:00 pm at Adath Jeshurun. Join the community to build and act on affordable housing in the metro area. We'll focus on action, housing policy, and building long term community bonds to sustain the work. Gather with your neighbors to learn about what is happening in your backyard and how to strive for housing justice in your city. Announcing Cranberry Ridge: Homes for Working Families in Plymouth
Bet Shalom, as a part of Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative and the West Metro Initiative, announced a new housing initiative in Plymouth. Cranberry Ridge will be located on Hwy 55 near Old Rockford Road and will be home to approximately 45 working families. Most of the families who will live at Cranberry Ridge will earn between $16,000 and $45,000. Some apartments will be set aside for families who have lost their home and need assistance to get back on their feet financially. Interfaith Outreach staff will be onsite at Cranberry Ridge to support parents' efforts to have the best possible jobs, increase their income, and meet their children's education and other needs. Background Check on Gun Sales
The Social Action Committee of Bet Shalom having the issues of Domestic Violence and Gun Safety as one of our pillars of Tikkun Olam is informing our congregants who are concerned about these areas to call their state congress representative in support of Criminal Background Checks on all Gun Sales (HF 1669; SF 1261) and to voice opposition against Stand Your Ground Bill (HF 238; SF 292)  For more information please view momsdemandaction.org  or  protectmn.org on these two bills and others that address gun safety issues.

Renewing Life
Renewing Life empowers participants to live authentically, view illness and life challenges as opportunities for growth, and discover and create a personal healing path. This proven curriculum has a focus on learning how to live the best possible life in the midst of challenges. This program meets on Wednesdays from May 3 - June 8 from 6:00 - 8:30 pm at Shalom Campus (this is an update from prior information which indicated meetings would be held at JFCS). Registration Open for Birthright Israel
Birthright Israel registration for Summer 2017 trips is now open. This is an opportunity for those 18 to 26 years old in our community to travel to Israel for free. Kesher is the only provider affiliated with the Reform movement. It is designed for Jewish young adults from all backgrounds looking for a thoughtful and inclusive approach to experiencing Israel. Wiesenthal Play
The Illusion Theater presents Wiesenthal - An Ordinary Man Who Did Extraordinary Things. Filled with hope, humanity and humor, Wiesenthal is the riveting true story of Simon Wiesenthal. Nicknamed the "Jewish James Bond," he devoted his life to bringing more than 1,100 Nazi war criminals to justice. His unbelievable dedication and tenacity over decades is honored in this play, which gives equal weight to his wisdom and wit during his long, purposeful life. The Play runs from April 25 - 30. Keeping the Spirit Alive
Alzheimer's Disease is a long and progressive illness. Witness Theater
Yachad is excited to bring "Witness Theater" to the community. The Witness Theater Project has brought Jewish teens and Holocaust survivors together to bond, build trust and share their stories. The stories collected are now being transformed in a theatrical production, to be performed at the JCC to preserve the memories and lessons of the Holocaust st that we continue to "never forget." We invite you to attend this production and witness the incredible show. Performance dates are April 30 at 2:00 pm, May 3 at 7:00 pm and May 4 at 7:00 pm. Maroon and Gold Shabbat
On May 5 from 6:00 - 8:30 pm Minnesota Hillel will host Maroon and Gold Shabbat, bringing together over 500 students, parents, alumni and community members at McNamara Alumni Center on campus. This event is truly the one time of year students get to show off our amazing campus community to you, our family, friends and supporters. Edina's Days of Remembrance Community Event
Edina's Days of Remembrance event, initiated by a local resident, aims to raise awareness and understanding for those whose lives and cultures have changed forever as a result of the Holocaust and other genocides.  This year, the event will focus on the impact of the Holocaust and Genocides from generation to generation (L'Dor Vador) .  Our program will include two speakers: Joni Sussman , a child of holocaust survivors and active in Holocaust Education throughout the Midwest, will speak about her parents' Holocaust experiences and Dr. Tea Tozman-Clark , co-founder and executive director of Green Card Voices, will speak about the Bosnian genocide that occurred in Srebrenica starting in 1995.  At the time, it was the single largest massacre in Europe since WWII.  Our event will take place  Sunday, May 7th from 1:00 to 3:00pm at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th Street, Edina . The City of Edina will be showing videos of local Holocaust and Genocide survivors on Channel 16 throughout the month of April.  Information about the event is also available on the City of Edina's website.

JFCS College Scholarship
Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis (JFCS) is currently taking applications for college scholarship funds for the 2017-18 academic year. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2017 Scholarships are available for applicants of all backgrounds and are based on both need and merit. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. We also have a dedicated fund for Jewish students who are attending college in Minnesota. The application is available on the JFCS website at  www.jfcsmpls.org , and can be submitted electronically via email.
