Business in Medicine Panel
Captivates Audience
Doctors have a great deal to contribute to the business side of medicine.
That was the consensus of the final Business in Medicine luncheon panel held at the college April 20. The panelists included Dr. Cristina Mata, chief medical officer of Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Dr. Robert Colton, co-founder of MDVIP and Clearly Derm, and Dr. Jasen Gundersen, president of Acute Care Services for Team Health.
The panelists answered questions around their dual roles as physicians and executives, and entrepreneurs. While they encouraged students to pursue roles in business and leadership, they emphasized that the students must spend some time in clinical practice before they attempt to lead as executives.
"You have to understand how to practice medicine first. Practice for a few years," Dr. Colton said. "You won't know how to work with other doctors if you don't understand the issues they face."
The panelists also agreed that the medical landscape is undergoing big changes and that doctors of the future would be involved more in so-called "value-based" care models rather than traditional fee-for-service models.
"It's important not to confuse needs with wants with wishes," Dr. Gundersen said. "We need a car to get to work; we want it to have air conditioning; we wish it were a Ferrari. When we focus on the needs, we focus the limited resources we have."
Dr. Mata encouraged students to pursue additional training in business if they want to be taken seriously by those in the business world and to become interested in the financial aspects of patient care, noting that having a seat at the table has become increasingly important for physicians.

Achievements of Faculty Member and College Student Honored at Convocation
Dr. Darin Trelka, FAU's 2017 Distinguished Teacher of the Year, gave the keynote address at the Honors Convocation and
Melanie Gil was honored as the college's Undergraduate Researcher of the Year for her work with mentor,
Dr. Ceylon Isgor.
Congratulations to them both.

First Medical Scholars Program Pinning Ceremony Held in Tallahassee
The first Medical Scholars Program Pinning Ceremony at Florida A&M University on April 21 honored the first graduates of the FAMU-FAU Medical Scholars Program, Michelle Wilson and Ugoma Onubogu. They will both matriculate at the college this August. Michelle will enter the M.D. program and Ugoma will enter the M.D./Ph.D. program with Scripps Florida.

Graduate Students Participate
in Annual Research Day
College graduate students presented their research in posters and oral presentations April 14 at an event organized by the college's Office of Graduate Programs. Fifteen students gave oral presentations and thirteen students presented posters. Three students received awards for their work.

Students Help Community
Through Diaper and Food Drive
On April 21, members of the college's pediatric interest group delivered diapers and food they collected to the Florida Department of Health-Palm Beach County. Without that contribution, the health department's Volunteer Services Program would not be able to meet the needs of the clients who seek services at the Delray Beach Health Center. The center's staff were overjoyed by the generosity and thanked the students for the donations.
Thanks to all the students, faculty, and staff that made the diaper drive a success.

Residents Helping Local Community
 Co
llege residents have been volunteering with community organizations. They worked at several health fairs and have assisted the Boca Health Care Van at the Boca Raton Helping Hands Soup Kitchen.
In the past two years, residents have given more than 350 volunteer hours to care for the underserved populations throughout South Florida.
One of the largest outreach projects of the year is the Marie K. Seide Cancer Foundation Run/Walk. Held annually at the Intracoastal Park in Boynton Beach, the event draws about 200 people. Residents provided basic exams, such as taking blood pressures and testing blood sugars levels.
Residents also treated dozens of people at The First Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach, Good Samaritan Church in Delray Beach, St. Katharine Drexel Church in Weston and at Our Lady of Perpetual Health in Delray Beach. Many patients would not have had access to a physician otherwise and some even chose to get follow-up care at our FAU clinics.

Boca Hoops Thanks Medical Students
College medical students teamed up with Boca Hoops to help provide physical exams to young basketball players to ensure they are healthy while playing the game.
Boca Hoops co-founder Dr. Joseph Forstot, and its board of directors, wanted to thank fourth-year students Arielle (Schultz) Grand, Coby Grand, Michael Mc Garry, Andrew O'Neill, Hermann Piard, Steven Freeland, Daniel Daroszewski, Elit ben Simon Hadad, Alexis Bayudan and third-year medical student Katie Weinert-Stein who donated their time to complete player physical exams, with community physicians to oversee and co-sign their work.

Summer Fellowship Awarded to Undergraduate Student and Mentor
The Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry announced the winners of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Awards. Among the recipients was undergraduate student, Haley Katz, and her college faculty mentor, Dr. Mahyar Nouri-Shirazi. The pair will receive $4,000, to support their project, "Immune Surveillance Towards Autologous and Allogeneic Cells."
Dr. Martinez Selected for Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar
Dr. Lisa Martinez has been selected to attend the Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar in July. The seminar is designed for women physicians and scientists holding medical school faculty appointments at the assistant professor level, and considering leadership positions. Her trip will be supported by the college's Academic Affairs Faculty Enrichment Funds Committee.
