Is Your Church Real?
A message from the District Superintendent

I know this sounds like a silly question because you probably have been there recently - at least I hope you have. Your five senses give testimony to the reality of the church building's physical structure. You can see it, touch it, hear the people (or creaky floors), and even smell and taste the goodness of the Lord on Communion Sundays. But is it real?

The question came to my mind as the Cabinet was discussing the approval of starting an online church. Needless to say, it was a lively and theologically invigorating debate about the nature and identifying characteristics of a church. Continue reading...

Parsonage Inspections Due

Attention Pastors, SPPRC Chairs, and Trustees:
If your church/charge owns a parsonage, the Annual Review of the Parsonage and the Parsonage Inventory forms are due May 1st.

The parsonage must be inspected even if it is empty or being rented. Download forms here

Helping Hands Carnival

Join us for our annual carnival to benefit our church mission projects. There will be plenty of food (including funnel cakes), music, a silent auction, yard sale, games, and much more. All proceeds will benefit church mission projects and all are welcome!
Social Media Workshop

James River District Communications Coordinator, Ronnika Davis, will offer a free workshop to the churches on the district who are interested in opening a church Facebook page. This is a basic class, and topics will include: benefits of having a church Facebook page; how to get started; Facebook terminology; social media ethics and more!  If you are interested in attending this workshop, please email  [email protected]  
New Facebook Page for Clergy Spouses

A new Facebook page has been created for Virginia Conference clergy spouses. It is a "Closed Group." This means that the page may be found when you search for Facebook for "VAUMC Clergy Spouses," but you must be approved to join. Only members can see posts.

Clergy Spiritual Retreat 
and Day Apart
May 16, 2017 

Mark your calendars for this special event beginning at 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. Rev. Sylvia Meadows has graciously offered her home/farm in Blackstone for our annual spring retreat and Day Apart. It will be a "Spa Day," and there will be NO training sessions.

Come to be refreshed, renewed, and revived! 

We will also recognize and bid farewell to our pastors leaving the James River District. This event is required for all full-time clergy. RSVP today to [email protected]

What are apportionments? How are they calculated? Where are these funds applied? A new series by the Virginia Conference Communications office will offer in-depth information about apportionments. From what they are to how they fit into the United Methodist connection, the series will publish information from Rev. Scholarship Available
High Street United Methodist Women 

The Ann Douglas Scholarship is available through the United Methodist Women of High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin, Virginia. The scholarship, in the amount of $750.00, is awarded annually to the best qualified candidate from the James River District. Applicants must have completed at least one year of college, have a grade point average of 2.75 and be pursuing a career in the ministry, in the field of Religious Studies, or be ministers completing their requirements for the Virginia Conference.

To be eligible for the 2017-2018 school term, all applications must be received by August 31, 2017.
