AB 164 (Arambula) Passes Assembly Human Services Unanimously!
AB 164 (Arambula) passed out of Assembly Human Services Committee with unanimous, bipartisan support! AB 164 would create a pathway to provide state CalFresh food assistance when federal assistance is unavailable or inadequate. AB 164 provides another tool in the toolbox to fight hunger, promote health and mitigate poverty.
A big thank you to Assemblymember Arambula for being a great champion of this effort to improve the state's ability to respond to residents in need. We are grateful to all our community partners those who provided support, including the powerful testimony from Ashley Harrington with Jewish Family Services-San Diego at the committee hearing.
There is a great deal of instability in federal policy right now, and we cannot predict how this will affect California's most vulnerable residents. AB 164 provides a way to be proactive, and improve the CalFresh system's ability to step up in times of need, now and in the future. Learn more here.
AB 164 will need your continued support as it moves through the Assembly. Stay tuned for calls to action!

SB 782 (Skinner) Moves Forward to Senate Appropriations!
Today, SB 782 (Skinner)
passed the Senate Education Committee and will move on to the Senate Committee on Appropriations. SB 782 would establish a grant program to incentivize public schools to serve more California-grown food in freshly prepared school meals.
We will be working with our co-sponsors, partners, and key stakeholders to further refine and strengthen the bill. There will be additional opportunities to support SB 782, stay tuned!
We want to express our sincere gratitude to supporters of SB 782, including those who submitted letters of support and to those who made it to today's hearing. Organizations spanning representation from education to agriculture and health to anti-hunger came together to encourage the state to incentivize school districts to buy fresh, California-grown ingredients.

Action Needed Today! Tell Congress to Oppose New GOP Health Care Bill
House Republicans are meeting today to discuss a new amendment to the American Health Care Act (AHCA) which would further weaken patient protections while maintaining the bill's massive cuts to Medicaid, including ending Medicaid's entitlement structure through per-capita caps. Despite the Republican efforts to brand the bill as a "compromise" it is simply more of the same damaging proposals, which would tear away health coverage from an estimated
24 million
mostly low-income and elderly people over the next 10 years. It would cause drastic harm to Californians, particularly those who already struggle to put food on the table and don't have the resources in their budgets to cover the upfront cost of premiums.
We are asking for your help again.
We won this fight last time and need to act now to make our voices heard.
Tell Congress to stand up for those who need a helping hand
and reject this harmful proposal that would deepen poverty and hunger among millions of vulnerable Californians.
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY!
The bill could move to the House Floor for a vote as soon as this Friday, so now is the time to act.
Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or go to
http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
to contact your Representative and to express your opposition to this latest GOP attack on health care for low-income Americans.
The following California House Republicans have stated that they are still undecided or have concerns about the impact of the bill on their constituents.
Take a few minutes today to call their DC or district office, especially if you live in their district.
Tell them to oppose the GOP health care plan, which would dramatically worsen health, hunger, and poverty in California.
