Stockmarket Challenge...

Connecting the classroom to the real world is a key factor in keeping young people  interested in their learning and we're always looking for exciting and innovative ways to do that at Trinity Catholic High School.

The Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge provides an outstanding, hands-on learning experience like no other, which teaches practical life lesson s on investing, decision-making, and teamwork.

CONCEPT: Each team is issued $500,000 of virtual cash and must use that money to make its initial stock picks prior to the event and submit them to Junior Achievement. During the event, each team will compete in a virtual market and must buy/sell shares in 26 fictitious companies. The goal of each team is to accumulate the highest possible net worth in their investment portfolio by the close of trading.

Onsite traders with PDA's make buying and selling instantaneous and trades are projected immediately on three large projection screens which track the following:

* Stock prices
* Graphical depictions of stock performance
* Team names with portfolio values and rankings

We are so proud of the 21 students who participated in this year's Stock Market Challenge and hope to have even more for next year!

TCHS Student, Helping Stamford's EcoSystem

Sophomore Collin McLaughlin of Stamford is building tubes to install at city marinas that would allow fishermen to responsibly dispose of their fishing wire, as part of his Eagle Scout project. McLaughlin is a Boy Scout  in Stamford Troop 9.
Collin wants to help preserve Stamford Harbor's delicate ecosystem - one fishing line at a time. He has  has proposed the installation of recycling receptacles for discarded lines in the harbor's main fishing areas. The 4 inch PVC receptacles are part of McLaughlin's Eagle Scout project, which aims to keep the harbor clean and protect the diverse wildlife that calls the city's aquatic habitat home.

An aritcle appeared on the front cover of the Stamford Advocate this past week.
